Soon Koh: Continued attention needed to address water, infrastructure needs in Bawang Assan

KUCHING (May 22): Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has called for continued attention to address the persistent water supply issues and infrastructure needs affecting his constituency.
While thanking the state government and relevant ministries for their efforts thus far, he said Sibu's water supply problems stem from its geographical location in low-lying peat swamp areas.
'Because of that, over time, water pipes have sunk several metres underground, making them prone to frequent leaks and bursts, leading to repeated supply disruptions,' he said when debating the motion of appreciation on the Governor's opening speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.
He also acknowledged that while water supply is primarily a federal responsibility, funding delays and slow implementation have compounded the problem.
'People in general are not aware that water supply is very much the federal government's responsibility, but the state government has recently stepped in to help mitigate the issue,' he said.
In this regard, he expressed his appreciation to Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi for his active involvement in addressing water supply issues in Sibu.
Turning to road infrastructure, Wong noted the recent completion of the Jalan Sungai Bidut/Kampung Tutus/Kampung Sebedil/Kampung Bungan Kecil road project (Package A) which cost RM103 million.
He said planning is underway for the Jalan Rantau Panjang/Rassau road project in Batang Igan estimated at RM254 million, and maintenance works for Jalan Kampung Sebedil worth RM500,000.
'Additionally, several road proposals have been submitted under the 13th Malaysia Plan, including the RM435 million Jalan Sungai Bidut/Batang Lassa/Kadang Sawai Jaya road, and the SK Tanjung Panasu bypass to Aup/Rantau Panjang estimated at RM5 million,' he said. bawang assan DUN wong soon koh

Child protection among key focus areas in RMK13, says minister

KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 23): Child protection will be a key focus for the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development in the upcoming tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), scheduled for next month. Federal Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that inter-ministerial discussions are already underway, with child protection expected to play a significant role in the ministry's proposed initiatives. 'We need to look at the overall framework when it comes to RMK13. Tomorrow (June 23), we will have a meeting to finalise our proposals, but the discussions will not be limited to matters under our ministry alone,' she said. She added that the discussions will also include topics such as the wellbeing of senior citizens and community health, including safe food supply practices, in line to promote holistic social welfare. 'All ministries have submitted their proposals. Further discussions will be held before a final decision is made,' Nancy explained. 'Insya-Allah, we will deliberate further before finalising everything tomorrow. What matters most is that the outcome will be for the good of Malaysia, especially for the people,' she said, adding that the Cabinet-level discussions will be chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. She also reiterated the importance of reporting abuse, noting that many cases remain unknown because they are not reported. 'There are cases that go unreported, which is why I urged in my speech for society to be more aware, and programmes like this help create awareness so people know there are laws and protections in place,' she emphasised. MoF: SST registration for expanded scope starts August 1
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has announced that new registration applications in relation to the expansion of the service tax scope and the revision of the sales tax rate, effective from July 1, 2025, can be made starting from Aug 1, 2025. For existing registered persons, applications for the addition of new services under the expansion of the service tax scope and tariff codes under the revision of the sales tax rate, which is effective from July 1, 2025, can be submitted beginning June 24, 2025, the ministry said in a post on X today. On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the sales tax rate and an expansion of the service tax scope, both of which will take effect from July 1. The sales tax rate remains unchanged for essential goods, while a five or 10 per cent rate will be imposed on selected items. Meanwhile, the scope of the service tax will be expanded to include six new services: leasing or rental, construction, finance, private healthcare, education, and beauty services. Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican reportedly said that revenue from the Sales and Service Tax (SST) collection is expected to increase by RM5 billion in 2025 and by RM10 billion in 2026, following the implementation of the SST revised and expanded scope starting next month.
