Rare moment caught on camera: Snail lays eggs through its neck in viral video

An extremely rare moment was caught on camera of a snail laying an egg from its neck. The moment was recorded by an employee of New Zealand's Department of Conservation. 'DOC has been managing this captive population in chilled containers in Hokitika since 2006, when work began to mine the majority of their habitat on the West Coast of the South Island,' DOC wrote, while posting the video.
'The captive management of Powelliphanta augusta has not only saved the species from extinction, but it's allowed us to learn more about the lives of these incredible creatures found nowhere else in the world,' it added. Take a look at the video of a snail laying an egg:
'It's remarkable that in all the time we've spent caring for the snails, this is the first time we've seen one lay an egg. We caught the action when we were weighing the snail. We turned it over to be weighed and saw the egg just starting to emerge from the snail,' said DOC Ranger Lisa Flanagan, who also filmed the creature, in a statement. How do snails mate and lay eggs?
'Powelliphanta have solved this by having an opening (a genital pore) on the right side of their body just below their head so that the snail only needs to peek out of its shell to do the business,' said DOC Senior Science Advisor Kath Walker. 'It extends its penis out of this pore and into its mate's pore, and its mate does the same, simultaneously exchanging sperm, which they can store until they each fertilise the sperm they've received to create eggs,' Walker continued.
'As hermaphrodites, they have both male and female genitalia, so although they usually mate with another to cross fertilise their eggs, as carnivores which have to live at relatively low density, being able to occasionally self-fertilise must help with survival of the species,' the senior science advisor added. About the snails at DOC:
Flanagan explained, 'Powelliphanta augusta are slow growing and long lived, not being sexually mature until they are about 8 years old and then laying only around 5 big eggs annually which can take more than a year to hatch. Some of our captive snails are between 25 and 30 years old – in this they're polar opposites to the pest garden snail we introduced to New Zealand which is like a weed, with thousands of offspring each year and a short life.'
DOC has also reintroduced new populations of these snails in the wild. They are working to create a sustainable population of the species in the wild.

Jason Momoa's son Nakoa-Wolf Momoa joins Dune 3 cast

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Jason Momoa 's son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, is set to join the cast of Dune 3, alongside his father, reported Deadline. Actress Ida Brooke will also be part of the film. As per Deadline, in the new film from Warner Bros. and Legendary, the pair, Nakoa-Wolf and Brooke, will play Leto II and Ghanima, the twin offspring of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) and Ch(Zendaya), born after the events of the original Frank Herbert novel. This project marks Nakoa-Wolf Momoa's big-screen debut. He is expected to join his father, Jason Momoa, who will play a resurrected ghola of Duncan Idaho, according to the outlet. Like Nakoa-Wolf, Brooke is a relative newcomer who has previously appeared only in Apple's sci-fi drama Silo and the film 'The Primrose Railway Children.' According to Deadline, Chalamet and Zendaya are just two of the cast members expected to return for the next Dune film, though a formal announcement on others has yet to be made. Earlier this year, Robert Pattinson reportedly entered talks for a villain role in the threequel. Dune is Legendary's expansive, multi-format sci-fi universe based on the Hugo Award-winning novel series by Frank Herbert, which has so far spawned two hit films: 2021's Dune: Part One and last year's Dune: Part Two, both from filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. The film earned a combined 1.12 billion USD at the global box office and won eight Oscars from 15 nominations, including Best Picture nominations for both, according to Deadline. The universe's most recent entry is the prequel TV series Dune: Prophecy, set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, which premiered on Max in November and has been renewed for a second season. It's expected that Villeneuve's third and final Dune film will adapt Herbert's novel Dune Messiah, set 12 years after the events of Dune, which follows Atreides' struggles with the consequences of his Fremen-led jihad upon his ascension to Emperor Muad'Dib. Why Facebook-parent Meta may face same 'AI copying' problem as ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, Microsoft

Representative image Facebook parent Meta 's newest AI model, Llama 3.1, has been found to replicate passages from well-known books, including Harry Potter, far more frequently than anticipated, as per a new report which also says that many of these works remain under copyright. Researchers claim that the AI has memorised roughly 42% of the first Harry Potter book and can accurately reproduce 50-word sections about half the time. The study, conducted by experts from Stanford, Cornell, and West Virginia University, examined how five leading AI models processed the Books3 dataset, which includes thousands of copyrighted titles. "Llama 3.1 70B—a mid-sized model Meta released in July 2024—is far more likely to reproduce Harry Potter text than any of the other four models, the researchers found . "Interestingly, Llama 1 65B, a similar-sized model released in February 2023, had memorized only 4.4 percent of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. This suggests that despite the potential legal liability, Meta did not do much to prevent memorization as it trained Llama 3. At least for this book, the problem got much worse between Llama 1 and Llama 3," the researchers wrote. Meta's Llama 3.1 has been noted for retaining large portions of well-known books, including The Hobbit, 1984, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. In contrast, earlier versions, such as Llama 1, only memorized around 4% of Harry Potter. This suggests that the newer model is preserving significantly more copyrighted content. Why Meta's models are reproducing exact text Researchers suggest several reasons why Meta's AI models may be copying text verbatim. One possibility is that the same books were repeatedly used during training, reinforcing memorisation rather than generalising language patterns. Others speculate that training data could include excerpts from fan websites, reviews, or academic papers, leading the model to inadvertently retain copyrighted content. Additionally, adjustments to the training process may have amplified this issue without developers realizing the extent of its impact. What this means for Meta These findings intensify concerns about how AI models are trained and whether they might be violating copyright laws. As authors and publishers push back against unauthorised use of their work, this could become a major challenge for tech companies like Meta. Earlier this year, The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement, alleging that their AI models, including ChatGPT, were trained on copyrighted articles without permission. According to the Times, OpenAI, 'can generate output that recites Times' content verbatim, closely summarizes it, and mimics its expressive style.'
