Can't get your hands on a Birkin? Here's your chance to own THE original Birkin

The Star06-06-2025

It's nearly impossible to walk inside an Hermes store and come home with a new Birkin bag.
But if you wanted to get your hands on the original Birkin bag – the prototype made for actress Jane Birkin – it is going up for auction. It will be sold as part of a Paris Fashion Icons sale, which Sotheby's is holding July 10.
The bag will be on view at Sotheby's in Manhattan through Tuesday and then transported – representatives would not say how, citing security concerns – to Sotheby's Galleries in Paris, where it will be on view from July 3-9.
There is no public estimate for how much the bag might fetch.
'At this stage we will communicate it privately to potential bidders,' said Morgane Halimi, the global head of handbags and fashion for Sotheby's.
'Obviously it is a one-of-a-kind piece, completely apart from any other handbag, or any other Birkin. We are breaking records with Birkin bags on a regular basis at auction.
"We foresee it to be as unique as the Diana jumper or a worn jersey from the NBA. It has value because of what it is and what has happened because of that bag.'
This is the original bag made in 1984 for Jane, who was an icon of French cinema.
The story behind the bag has become something of a fashion legend. Jane was on an Air France flight to London from Paris and had been upgraded to first class.
The basket bag she carried, her signature for decades, was in poor shape. As she boarded the plane, the contents started to spill out: wallet, keys, business cards, diapers, cigarettes, glasses.

Her seatmate happened to be Jean-Louis Dumas, then the CEO of Hermes, the luxury house founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermes.
Jane and Dumas talked about how she needed a bag that could fit all of her necessities and they began to sketch out an idea on an airsickness bag. Their concept had two handles like a tote, and somewhat resembled a shrunken version of the Haut A Courroies luggage that Hermes made.
Her custom bag became the prototype of the Birkin, which was named after her.
The bag became desirable partly for its rarity.
'There are a limited number of them created each year,' Halimi said.
'There is the craftsmanship: you can repair it and restore it and cherish it. And then in a world of fast fashion and seasonal trends, it's not going to be out of style anytime soon. If you are offered one to buy at Hermes, you feel like part of this small club.'
The Birkin has become a fixture in pop culture since its inception, name checked in many song lyrics and appearing as a plotline on a 2001 episode of Sex And The City that included the memorable line: 'It's not a bag, it's a Birkin!'
This original bag is different in several ways from the commercially available Birkins.
Its size is unique, with a height of just under 14 inches and a depth of just under 16 inches; its strap is not removable; the hardware is made of brass; the inner zipper is from a different manufacturer; the studs on the bottom are a different shape.
And one more detail: a nail clipper that Jane had hung on the outside of the bag is included. She was known for not being precious with her Birkins.
She covered some in stickers for political causes and frequently hung trinkets off them.

On social media, fans have taken to posting their own charm-laden bags or phones, which some call 'Birkinifying'. Over the past year, imitations – or homages – to the bag have gotten notice online, including the Boatkin.
The original Birkin, though, has remained a subject of intense fascination.
It was exhibited at New York's Museum of Modern Art as part of the show Items: Is Fashion Modern? that ran from 2017 to 2018, and again in 2020 at London's Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the exhibition Bags Inside Out .
Sotheby's displayed it in the company's Paris galleries in October 2024, and at Sotheby's Maison, Hong Kong in April 2025.
Thousands of people came to see the bag at the Sotheby's showings, Halimi said.
Jane, who died in July 2023, owned five Birkin bags over the course of her life, one of which sold for around US$160,000 (approximately RM677,000) in a 2021 auction.
This prototype, which has the added value of being the original, was sold by Jane at a charity auction for Aids in October 1994.
It went to auction again in May 2000, at Poulain-Le Fur, and was purchased by Catherine Benier, a prominent collector and the owner of the Les 3 Marches de Catherine B vintage shop in Paris, for an undisclosed price.

'Acquiring the first Birkin from Hermes was a dream of mine as a collector,' Benier wrote in an email.
She said she had read about the 1994 auction but didn't participate, and was determined to win the 2000 auction when she heard about it in advance.
'I got the bag after fierce bidding between myself and other foreign bidders… It's the jewel in my collection.'
Benier kept the bag stored, but the crowds who visited it last fall influenced her decision to sell.
'A collection is only worth it if it's shared,' she wrote.
She expects the bag to set records, but would not specify a desired number.
'Twenty-five years ago when I acquired it, it was already the most expensive bag in the world,' she wrote.
'All these elements fuel the legend of the first Birkin bag, so certainly a price exists, but what is it? This bag is the object of a lifetime, it's a legend, an icon. Does a legend have a price? Certainly.' – ©2025 The New York Times Company

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images/File Photo (Reuters) -NBA star Kevin Durant has purchased a minority stake in French soccer club Paris St Germain, the Champions League winners said on Friday, and the Phoenix Suns forward will provide expertise on their planned expansion into basketball. Durant, two-time NBA champion and four-time Olympic gold medallist, has signed a share purchase and strategic partnership agreement with PSG's majority shareholder Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), through his company Boardroom. "It is an honour to partner with QSI and to be a shareholder of Paris St Germain, a club and a city that is deeply close to my heart," Durant, who won gold at the Paris Olympics last year, said. "This club has big plans and I look forward to being part of the next phase of growth and exploring new investment opportunities with QSI." One of those opportunities is likely to come in the world of basketball, with PSG already involved in early-stage talks with the NBA regarding potential investment and venues for a new basketball league in Europe. Durant, who had already forged a link with PSG through the club's minority shareholder Arctos Partners, will partner on a wide range of commercial, investment and content production initiatives. The 36-year-old will also support the club in its strategy of diversification and growth on sporting and commercial fronts, including developing the club's strategy in the United States and other international markets. PSG said in their release that Durant would provide "expertise on PSG's multi-sport strategy, particularly regarding future projects in the field of basketball". Durant was recently included in Forbes' 2025 list of the world's highest-paid athletes, coming in at number 10 with earnings of $101.4 million. (Reporting by Trevor StynesEditing by Toby Davis)

TEAMSTERS AT AIRGAS PREPARE TO STRIKE

Ohio and Michigan Workers Demand Fair Contract, End to Unfair Labor Practices WASHINGTON, June 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Teamsters at Airgas are preparing to take action as the company continues to stall at the bargaining table and violate federal labor laws. Workers represented by Teamsters Local 283 in Ferndale, Mich., and Teamsters Local 507 in Cleveland have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. If Airgas fails to present a fair contract, workers in Michigan and Ohio will join Teamsters Local 701 members in New Jersey, who were already forced onto the picket line last week. 'Airgas management is playing hardball and actively undermining our members' rights,' said Juan Campos, Director of the Teamsters Tankhaul Division and Teamsters International Vice President At-Large. 'The company is dragging out negotiations on purpose. They think they can wear our members down if they keep stalling. But Teamsters are more fired up than ever and ready for this fight.' Airgas, a subsidiary of French multinational Air Liquide, is the largest U.S. distributor of industrial, medical, and specialty gases. The company pulled in nearly $30 billion last year — but despite record profits and revenue, it continues to break the law and refuses to offer contracts that meet industry standards. 'Our members are done being strung along by this company,' said Dan Chavez, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 507. 'A strike isn't our first choice, but if Airgas won't bargain in good faith or stop violating our rights, we're prepared to take action. This is a fight Airgas will regret starting.' The Teamsters represent hundreds of Airgas workers across the country. If the company fails to present a fair contract and refuses to rectify its unfair labor practices, a multi-local strike could see picket lines extend nationwide. 'The company has refused to offer a contract that respects the skill, dedication, and value our members bring to the job every single day,' said Steve Hicks, President of Local 283. 'If a strike happens, the blame lies squarely with Airgas management.' Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Visit for more information. [Watch] [Photos] When 1664 Met CLOT: A Weekend That Redefined Cool In KL

Subscribe to our FREE There's something magical about watching a brand partnership come to life exactly as it should. Last weekend, 1664 and CLOT's Bon Appétit-lah celebration at TRX's Raintree Plaza was one of those rare moments where everything just clicked – and the nearly 6,800 people who showed up seemed to feel it too. Walking into the plaza, you immediately knew this wasn't going to be another forgettable brand event. The massive circular LED installation hung suspended above the crowd like a beacon, casting that signature 1664 blue glow across faces that were genuinely lit up with excitement. Against KL's glittering skyline, it felt like the city had gained a new landmark, even if just for the weekend. When Production Meets Purpose What was striking at first wasn't just the scale, though the photos certainly capture the impressive setup; it was how naturally everything flowed together. The stage didn't dominate the space; it invited people in while the branding felt intentional rather than overwhelming, creating this cohesive world where French elegance met street culture authenticity. You could see it in how people moved through the space. Groups of friends discovering new corners, couples finding perfect photo spots that didn't feel forced, and strangers bonding over shared appreciation for the limited-edition pieces. The crowd itself became part of the experience, with each person contributing to the energy rather than merely consuming it. A Collaboration That Actually Made Sense CLOT's influence was everywhere, but never in a way that felt heavy-handed. The streetwear aesthetic naturally flowed through the evening – vintage caps catching the stage lights, oversized silhouettes creating interesting shadows, and that effortless style that both brands understand so well. The merchandise area buzzed with genuine interest throughout both nights. People weren't just grabbing freebies; they were examining pieces, discussing the design details, appreciating the thoughtful way two distinct brand languages had been merged into something fresh. Those ceramic tumblers? They became instant conversation starters, beautiful enough that you'd actually want to use them at home. Throughout both nights, 1664 and 1664 Brut flowed freely – served both in bottles and on draft – ensuring that the French brewing heritage remained at the heart of every toast, every conversation, and every moment of connection that made this collaboration so memorable. Two Nights, Two Different Energies Friday evening with the German DJ duo The crowd built organically, conversations flowing as easily as the beer, everyone settling into the weekend's rhythm. You can see it in the photos – relaxed smiles, natural poses, people genuinely enjoying themselves without trying too hard. Saturday brought a different intensity altogether. When Taiwanese singer It was festival energy contained within the heart of KL's business district. Beyond the Beer The East-meets-French food concept proved that attention to detail extends beyond the main event. From luxurious shrimp ramen topped with vibrant orange roe to artisanal sandwiches featuring fresh cucumber, pickled radish, and premium cuts on perfectly golden brioche – every dish told the story of two cultures meeting in delicious harmony. Watching people genuinely excited about fusion dishes, taking time to savour flavours rather than just grabbing whatever was available, reinforced that this was about creating a complete cultural experience. Every element supported the others – the food complemented the drinks, the music enhanced the atmosphere, and the merchandise felt like natural extensions of the evening rather than afterthoughts. Olga Pulyaeva, Marketing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia, said the response to Bon Appétit-lah this year has been phenomenal. Our collaboration with CLOT brought a fresh dimension to how people experience beer culture in Malaysia, blending French brewing heritage with street-smart edge in ways that resonated deeply with our audience. The Story Continues The 1664 Blue Hour is now making its way to 30 outlets nationwide through June and July, bringing pieces of the weekend's magic to a wider audience. Those coveted CLOT collaboration pieces and ceramic tumblers are still available with 1664 purchases – tangible reminders of a weekend when everything came together perfectly. This collaboration shows what's possible when brands stop playing it safe and start creating genuine cultural moments. 1664 and CLOT didn't just throw a party – they crafted an experience that people will remember, talk about, and want to be part of again. All activities for non-Muslims aged 21 and above. Celebrate responsibly – the memories are worth remembering clearly. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's .
