China sets launch of asteroid probe Tianwen-2 for late May

BEIJING : China is preparing to launch near-Earth asteroid probe Tianwen-2 at the end of May, state-run CCTV reported today, in the country's first mission to collect samples from interplanetary space.
Tianwen-2 was transported to the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre's launch area on May 14 and will take off after passing inspections, the report said.
The craft will use a mechanical arm to scoop up dust samples from the surface of 2016 HO3, a small 100m asteroid that circles Earth like a 'quasi-satellite'.
It will also explore 311P, a comet.
Other nations including the US and Japan have successfully landed on asteroids.
A space race between China and the US has led to the launch of new exploration plans in recent years.
In 2024, China became the first nation to bring back samples from the moon's far side with its Chang'e-6 lunar probe.
Around 2028, China's Tianwen-3 mission will attempt to bring back samples from Mars.

Under the MoU, titled "CoolThink@JC × Cambodia Sharing and Exchange Programme", the ministry will adopt and adapt CoolThink@JC's internationally recognised curriculum and innovative education model in Cambodian primary schools. The aim is to ensure that students from diverse backgrounds have equitable access to quality computational thinking education, thus nurturing future-ready talent for the digital Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport plans to introduce CoolThink@JC's curricular materials and successful experiences in 100 public schools in Cambodia, benefiting approximately 30,000 students and 500 teachers, from 2025 to 2028. By enhancing students' computational thinking and problem-solving skills, the initiative can help to bridge the digital divide and open a new chapter in the development of Cambodia's education system. As an ASEAN member state participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, Cambodia plans to share this development at international platforms such as the 2026 Global Smart Education Conference in Beijing, further amplifying the programme's exploring both local and global educational perspectives and exchanging knowledge, educators from Hong Kong and Cambodia will collaborate to create better learning environments for Asian students. TOKYO, June 18 — Japan's second-biggest carmaker Honda has successfully tested an experimental reusable rocket, the company said, as it seeks to expand into the space sector. Honda, which hopes to develop the tech prowess for a suborbital launch by 2029, conducted a test flight of its rocket on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. 'The test was completed successfully, the first time Honda landed a rocket after reaching an altitude of nearly 300 metres,' the company said in a statement yesterday. The prototype device, around six metres tall, landed only 37 centimetres from its designated landing spot after the one-minute flight. Demand for satellite launch rockets is expected to increase in the coming years as expectations grow for 'a data system in outer space', the Honda statement said. 'Honda has chosen to take on the technological challenge of developing reusable rockets by utilising Honda technologies amassed in the development of various products and automated driving systems,' it said. In future, the rockets could be used to set up satellite-based communication tools and to monitor environmental conditions such as global warming, Honda added. Elon Musk's SpaceX is known for its use of reusable rockets — a fast-growing field with various companies worldwide racing to develop their own models. Japan's space agency JAXA is also on a mission to become a major player for satellite launches, including with its H3 rocket, which is not reusable. Meanwhile Japanese startups are vying to enter the busy field, including Space One, which in December suffered its second failed rocket launch. — AFP
