'It won't be easy': Sourav Ganguly lays out path for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play in 2027 ODI World Cup
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's Test retirements have sparked debate over their 2027 ODI World Cup hopes. Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes it won't be easy for the legends and outlined what they must do to stay in contention. read more Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma shocked the world recently by announcing their retirements from Test cricket. They had already stepped down from T20 cricket last year after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Their recent decisions to retire from red-ball cricket have raised a big question around their availability to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both Kohli and Rohit are modern-day legends, and fans would love to see them lift the ODI World Cup trophy before they say goodbye to international cricket. The 2027 Cricket World Cup is still more than two years away and by then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will turn 40. There are concerns regarding their fitness and match-readiness at that age. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, since they won't be playing Tests and T20s anymore, some believe that they can now fully focus on ODIs and prepare themselves just for the 50-over format. That could actually work in their favour, as they will have fewer matches to worry about and can manage their bodies better. Ganguly on Kohli-Rohit's ODI future But former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has a different view. Ganguly believes that if Kohli and Rohit are serious about playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, they will have to stay active in the format for the next two years. 'It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in an interview. India have at least 27 ODI matches scheduled between now and the next World Cup. Ganguly feels that Kohli and Rohit must stay committed to playing most, if not all, of these matches if they really want to be part of the World Cup squad. Both Rohit and Kohli have already had legendary careers. They recently won the ICC Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. They qualified for the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single game, but lost to Australia in the summit clash. Note, Rohit is still the captain of the Indian ODI team. This rise had nothing to do with a touchdown or a Super Bowl win. It had to do with someone not even in football — singer . Now, experts say she may have changed the game in a way no athlete ever could. Taylor Swift brings big changes to NFL, outshines Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes in popularity impact In February 2024, during Super Bowl LVIII held in Las Vegas, Marissa Solis, the NFL's senior vice president of global brand and consumer marketing, revealed a surprising fact. She said nearly 47% of the league's TV viewers were women, a huge jump from previous years. Solis credited Taylor Swift for this change. Taylor Swift has been dating , the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, since September 2023. Her many appearances at Kansas City Chiefs games made instant news on both TV and social media. Even NFL legends and insiders could see the difference. Taylor Swift did not throw a football or score a touchdown, but her attendance has developed this new viewership, especially female viewership. Erin Andrews, talking during Fox Sports' Sunday in 2024, said, 'Our ratings are up for women, which is huge for us. America's Game of the Week is now one of the top-rated shows for women.' Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson say Taylor Swift made NFL more friendly for new fans In a podcast episode aired in March 2024, Erin Andrews and co-host Charissa Thompson shared how Taylor Swift made the NFL feel more welcoming. 'It's cool,' Andrews said. 'Women are less afraid to watch football now. Taylor helped with that.' Charissa Thompson added , 'We want all types of fans – new and old. And now, more women feel comfortable watching games.' Taylor Swift's star power fueled this change that even surprised longtime NFL fans. Between September 2023 and February 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs may have experienced some of the highest female numbers of any viewership in the history of the NFL, particularly for the games Taylor Swift attended in person. "Evenly poised...": Hussain on Eng-Ind 1st Test, praises hosts for attacking Bumrah
Leeds [UK], June 22 (ANI): Former England captain Nasser Hussain hailed batter Harry Brook's counter-attack against Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and added that heading into the second session, the match looks 'evenly poised' with Bumrah's new ball spell being crucial. Even though India struck twice, a counter-attacking fifty by Brook and his partnerships with skipper Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith helped the Three Lions eat further into the first innings score of 471 runs set by India, as they ended the first session on 327/5. Against Bumrah, Brook made a statement, hitting him for a boundary and managing nine runs off 23 balls against him. Speaking on air as quoted by Sky Sports, the ex-English skipper said, 'You wondered whether England would see off Bumrah or go after him, and Brook went after him. Running down the pitch is one of his shots.' 'He is world class but of his eight hundreds, only one has come in England. He would love to make that two on his home ground, kick on and make a really big score,' he added. Further highlighting the state of the game heading into the second session, Nasser said, 'This game is evenly poised. We are three overs from the new ball, and we know who is going to take that.' 'Whoever wins the Bumrah spell will go a long way to winning this Test,' he added. At the end of the first session, England was 327/5, with Brook (57*) and Smith (29*) unbeaten. They trail by 144 runs. England started the first session of the day on 209/3, with Ollie Pope (100*) and Harry Brook (0*) unbeaten. Pope and Brook started off on an attacking note, with the latter getting a four and six against Prasidh Krishna in the first over and Pope smacking a length delivery from Jasprit Bumrah on the next over's very first ball. However, a delivery wide outside off by Krishna was slashed at hard by Pope, getting an edge and going straight into the hands of Rishabh Pant, who completed his 150th catch as a wicketkeeper. Pope was gone for 106 in 137 balls, with 14 fours. England was 225/4 . Brook continued stamping his authority on pacers, while skipper Ben Stokes settled from the other end. England reached the 250-run mark in 59 overs. It was simply raining boundaries, and the duo formed a 50-run stand in 78 balls. However, Mohammed Siraj struck, removing Stokes for 20 in 52 balls (three fours), finding a thick edge of the bat. England was 276/5. Early in his innings, after two solid boundaries, Jamie Smith survived a leg-before-wicket review, with Shardul Thakur missing out on a golden chance to open his wicket tally as the ball missed the leg stump. England touched the 300-run mark in 71 overs. Pant dropped a catch of Brook and he capitalised on it, reaching his 12th Test fifty in 65 balls, with seven fours and a six. Jamie and Brook also completed a 50-run stand. (ANI)
