Singer CMAT says ‘fake version' of Irish culture is being ‘built up' by English

Glasgow Times22-05-2025

The 29-year-old, whose real name is Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, is part of a number of Irish acts to rise to popularity in recent years alongside the likes of indie rockers Fontaines DC and rap trio Kneecap, which has prompted a surge in interest in Irish culture in the UK and US.
Speaking to Glamour UK, the Crazymad For Me singer said of the situation: 'I didn't relate to any of it, like, why am I seeing Claddagh rings everywhere? The GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) jerseys? Why is everyone pretending we had this exact same childhood?

'There's this very romantic vision of Ireland but I grew up in a place where it's not very fun to grow up. This fake version of our identity was being built up by Americans and English people and claimed for themselves.'
The singer is due to release her third album Euro-Country later this year, and says the record features a song about a performance at Radio 1's Big Weekend – when the BBC had to switch the comments off due to people body-shaming her – called Take A Sexy Picture Of Me.
She told Glamour UK: 'That song is about getting fat-shamed on the internet all the time. I wanted to really dig into commercial attractiveness and how women are pruned into this marketable product until they turn about 27.
'I genuinely didn't care that people got so angry that I thought I was sexy, but it forced a lot of 15-year-old girls who love CMAT, who might even be bigger than me, to witness a level of vitriol against a woman's body against her will.'
The full interview with CMAT can be read in the May digital issue of Glamour UK which is online now.

Inside Ellen DeGeneres' rustic Cotswolds home after fleeing the US

Since Ellen has fled the US, she has lived in two country homes - but the first one was far from the couple's dream home and finally the couples have found happiness in their new home... and sheep Ellen DeGeneres, 67, quietly moved to the UK after Donald Trump's re-election in 2024, ditching her $96million (£71million) California estate for the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. While Ellen and Portia originally snapped up a sprawling 43-acre farmhouse, things didn't go to plan. The luxury mansion bought as a dream escape was reportedly hit with epic flooding, and locals say nearby roads were left five feet under water. The couple are also said to have struggled with tight country roads, even needing to detour a mile and a half just to get around traffic bollards. ‌ Now, they've moved to a second property perched on higher ground in Oxfordshire and the new spot already seems like a better match - no flooding, fewer detours and as fans have seen this week, plenty of space for sheep to roam.. or sneak inside ‌ This week, we got a peek inside as Ellen shared a sweet snap of Portia photographing a rainbow from their hilltop garden. Captioning the photo, she gushed: 'My wife, a rainbow, and my wife taking a photograph of a rainbow.' She's also been showing off their growing animal family including their new sheep, who've made themselves very at home. In a recent Instagram video, four sheep were seen wandering through the couple's open-plan home, startling their tiny dog. 'They're inside?' Portia can be heard asking, to which Ellen calmly replies, 'Yeah, they're inside.' Another clip, filmed by Portia, shows one of the sheep named Bernie strolling indoors. 'Oh no, Bernie, you can't be in here,' she laughs, gently guiding her back out. Just days earlier, Ellen posted footage of the sheep barging into the chicken coop. 'That's not your food! Get out of there,' she scolded, chasing them off camera. ‌ But while the couple are embracing rural life - chickens and all. However not everything's gone unnoticed. Ellen was recently roasted by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane at a star-studded charity gala, where he joked: 'She left right after the election… now she's the nicest person in France.' But not quite accurate, she's actually set up home in the English countryside. Ellen previously hit back at claims she's 'mean,' telling fans during a stand-up show: 'I can be demanding and tough… but I'm not mean.' Despite the storms, the pair seem to be settling into village life with their new £15 million hilltop home offering sweeping views, a sustainable drainage system, and hopefully fewer surprises.

Noel Edmonds and what he's really like off-camera, revealed by co-worker

Noel Edmonds and what he's really like off-camera, revealed by co-worker Noel Edmonds' friend and co-star Julie has revealed what the TV favourite is really like off-screen and how he's settled in to life in New Zealand since he moved there in 2019 Noel Edmonds had worked with British expat Julie on his River Haven ineyard (Image: Julie Crook ) A woman who worked alongside Noel Edmonds at his River Haven estate in Ngatimoti, New Zealand, has shared her insight into the television personality's off-screen nature. Following his departure from I'm A Celebrity in 2019, Edmonds relocated to New Zealand, where he purchased the £15m River Haven property. This estate comprises 12 properties, including a pub named The B*gger Inn and his own vineyard. These features will be showcased in an upcoming ITV documentary that follows Edmonds as he builds a new life in New Zealand. ‌ Julie, a British expat living near River Haven, had the opportunity to work with Noel in his vineyard after offering to help with the grape harvest. ‌ The British star moved to New Zealand after his exit from I'm A Celebrity in 2019 (Image: Mike Marsland, WireImagevia Getty Images ) Although their collaboration was filmed for the ITV show, Julie claims that Edmonds' friendly nature was genuine and not just for the cameras, , reports Belfast Live. In an interview with Julie revealed: "He's just the kind of man who goes out of his way. While we were working on the vineyard, he was giving us water and ice pops, and he got to know everybody's name and even when you go to the B**ger Inn for a meal, he'll just come over and just have a chat whether you know him or not, and some Kiwis don't even know that he's a celebrity. "He doesn't shy away from hard work either, he was getting his hands dirty." The British star had bought the property after relocating New Zealand with his wife Liz (Image: ITV ) ‌ Julie has responded to the criticism aimed at Noel over his purchase of River Haven, which has stirred a local and media storm since he moved in, per a report from the Express. She weighed in on the situation, calling his relocation 'great' for driving tourism to Ngatimoti, thanks to his vineyard being located there. Discussing Noel's charitable nature, Julie highlighted his $10,000 contribution towards clearing a local school's debt. ‌ However, she conceded that Noel's particularly British dry wit doesn't always resonate with the locals. Expanding on this, she remarked: "I don't think because they don't get him and as an immigrant from the UK, we have the English banter so I understand it, and Kiwis don't get that sense of humour, and it can come across as a bit weird to them." The first episode offers viewers a glimpse into how Noel and his wife Liz are getting on with the community, featuring highlights such as Noel outlining his health regimen, the eye-catching golden statue outside his pub, and a revelation from Noel that he "was an emperor in a past life". O hAnnaidh, 27, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, was bailed until later in the summer — leaving him free to play at Glastonbury. Asked by The Sun on Sunday if he thinks Kneecap should play, the PM, left, said: 'No I don't. 'I think we need to come down really clearly on this. I won't say too much, because there's a court case on, but I don't think that's appropriate.' The Belfast group are due to play the West Holts Stage on Saturday. Bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh have supported O hAnnaidh. They said at court: 'For anybody going to Glastonbury, you can see us there at 4pm on Saturday. 'If you can't be there we'll be on the BBC. Most importantly: free, free Palestine.' The BBC last night faced pressure not to air Kneecap's set, after Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: 'It should not be rewarding extremism.' A spokesman for the broadcaster said: 'Decisions on our output will be made in the lead up to the festival.'
