ITBP scales world's fifth highest peak for the first time
The Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully scaled Mt. Makalu — the world's fifth highest peak, at an altitude of 8,485 metres from the sea level, the China-border guarding force said on Friday.
The ascent to the Himalayan peak in Nepal was made on April 19, it said.
The International Mountaineering Expedition to Mt. Makalu and Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m) was flagged off from Delhi on March 21.
'It was a historic twin summit attempt — the first of its kind in ITBP history. Both peaks were being attempted for the first time by the force, adding to the challenge and legacy of this mission. Both peaks are in Nepal,' ITBP said in a statement.
Led by Deputy Commandant Anoop Kumar Negi, and Nihas Suresh as Deputy Leader, the 12-member team was divided into two groups of six climbers each. The Mt. Makalu team achieved an 83% success rate, with five climbers reaching the summit at 8.15 a.m. on April 19.
'The [Mt.] Annapurna team faced extreme weather, including a blizzard and whiteout conditions, and made a courageous push up to 7,940 meters, just 150 meters below the summit, before making a safe and responsible retreat on the same day at 2.45 pm,' ITBP said.
Reinforcing its environmental commitment under the 'Clean Himalaya – Save Glacier' campaign, the team collected 150 kg of non-biodegradable waste from higher camps during the expedition.
With this summit, ITBP has now successfully scaled six of the world's 14 'eight-thousanders'. ITBP has so far scaled 229 peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Manaslu — having summited Everest five times.

Final preparations reviewed for Kailash Mansarovar yatra
Pithoragarh: Pithoragarh district magistrate Vinod Kumar Goswami, on Friday, reviewed the final preparations for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra scheduled to resume on June 30 after a five-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) – the nodal agency for the yatra. To facilitate the journey, KMVN has arranged 13 buses, with two reserved as backup. The DM instructed the health department to establish base hospital facilities at Gunji and directed BRO to deploy earth movers at landslide-prone areas to ensure smooth vehicle movement, with road condition bulletins to be issued twice daily. He also instructed the establishment of a robust communication system for pilgrims and support staff. "The 23-day pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar will be conducted by road via Lipulekh pass. This year, only five batches – each comprising 50 pilgrims – will undertake the yatra. Pilgrims will also have the opportunity to visit Adi Kailash, Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple, and Jageswar Dham," said DM Goswami. Officials said the first batch will assemble in Delhi on June 30 to complete visa, fee, and medical formalities. The group will then proceed to Tanakpur on July 4, from where ITBP will escort them to Lipulekh. The last batch will depart on Aug 4, with the yatra concluding on Aug 26.

Dehradun: Chopper operations to Kedarnath remained suspended for the seventh straight day on Saturday after a crash killed seven people on June 15, grounding eight operators, cancelling thousands of bookings and causing financial losses over Rs 4 crore in Rudraprayag district. Sources said helicopter services are expected to resume only around Sept 15, after the end of the monsoon season. District tourism officer Rahul Chaubey said no bookings were made beyond June 22 due to the halt, which was initiated in the wake of monsoon and pending safety directives. Chaubey, who also oversees helicopter services on the Kedarnath route, said, "Around 900 tickets are being cancelled each day as the choppers are not operating since June 15, which means anything between 5,400 to 6,000 tickets have been cancelled in this duration. We are waiting for instructions from U ttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) before proceeding any further." Since the Kedarnath yatra began, 56,044 pilgrims have taken helicopter rides from Guptkashi, Sirsi and Phata, while 54,209 have returned from Kedarnath to these helipads. The June 15 incident was the fifth helicopter-related mishap on the Char Dham route in 45 days. J-K conducts flood mock drill in Pahalgam to bolster Amarnath Yatra preparedness
Pahalgam (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 20 (ANI): The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Department conducted a mock drill simulating a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) scenario in Pahalgam on Friday. The exercise was held in coordination with the Anantnag District Management Authority and saw participation from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indian Army, and other emergency support and line departments. The exercise aimed at enhancing preparedness for the Amarnath Yatra will start on July 3. It tested response mechanisms for disasters like floods and accidents, critical for the safety of over 4.5 lakh pilgrims who visited the Amarnath cave shrine last year. The Deputy Secretary of the J-K Disaster Management Department, Snober Jameel, while speaking to ANI, stated, 'It is a very significant and important pilgrimage for us. So, before that, too, it's crucial that we ensure people are already prepared. Given the extreme weather events we are witnessing nowadays--like cloudbursts and other types of events--we must be prepared in advance. We have already implemented preparedness and preventive measures. For prompt response, we have already trained our staff.' The Deputy Secretary stated that the initiative aims to tackle potential disasters in advance, highlighting the region's vulnerability due to numerous glacial lakes in the Himalayas. She said, 'This initiative is by the J-K Disaster Management Department. This mock exercise has been organised in collaboration with the Anantnag District Management Authority. GLOF hazards are a global issue, as we know, and especially in the Himalayan region, where there are many glacial lakes. The approach of the Disaster Management Department and the J-K government has always been that we should be prepared in advance to tackle any disaster.' She said that the drill aims to sensitise and mobilise response forces, including the SDRF, NDRF, and the Army. 'This initiative has been taken to conduct a mock exercise specifically for GLOFs, so that all response forces--be it SDRF, NDRF, the Army, Emergency Support Function departments, line departments, our administrative personnel, and other disaster managers--can be sensitised and mobilised. This is being done to implement preparedness measures and demonstrate the practical steps that need to be taken for a response. The idea is that if we face any such disaster in the future, we are fully prepared.' (ANI)
