Helicopter services for Chardham yatra suspended for two days
Helicopter services on the Chardham yatra route were suspended for two days on Sunday in the wake of the crash of a chopper returning from Kedarnath.
Seven people, including the pilot, were killed in the helicopter crash on Sunday (June 15, 2025) morning.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who held an emergency meeting with senior officials to discuss the situation, said helicopter services will remain suspended for two days as the weather is bad and the safety of passengers is the state government's top priority.
He also told officials at the meeting to issue a strict SOP for helicopter operations in the State and set up a control and command centre in Dehradun besides taking action against those responsible for the crash.
'There should not be any laxity regarding compliance with DGCA norms in helicopter operations in the state. It should also be ensured that the pilots flying in the upper Himalayan region are experienced,' Mr. Dhami said after the emergency meeting. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan, Tourism and Civil Aviation Secretary Sachin Kurve, Disaster Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman, UCADA (Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority) and DGCA officials attended the meeting held via video conferencing.
Mr. Dhami attributed the crash to inclement weather and said heli operations will remain suspended for two days on Sunday (June 15) and Monday (June 16).
'The weather is also bad and the safety of pilgrims is paramount. There will be no heli services today and tomorrow. Aviation companies, DGCA and UCADA have been asked to review the situation thoroughly before resuming heli operations,' he said.
Helicopter crashes or emergency landings are occurring at an alarming frequency on the Chardham yatra route in Uttarakhand. The Chardham yatra involves Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri and Gangotri shrines.
The latest crash involving an Aryan Aviation Pvt. Ltd. chopper returning from Kedarnath near Guptkashi on Sunday morning is the fifth helicopter accident on the pilgrimage route since the start of the yatra on April 30.

Dehradun: Chopper operations to Kedarnath remained suspended for the seventh straight day on Saturday after a crash killed seven people on June 15, grounding eight operators, cancelling thousands of bookings and causing financial losses over Rs 4 crore in Rudraprayag district. Sources said helicopter services are expected to resume only around Sept 15, after the end of the monsoon season. District tourism officer Rahul Chaubey said no bookings were made beyond June 22 due to the halt, which was initiated in the wake of monsoon and pending safety directives. Since the Kedarnath yatra began, 56,044 pilgrims have taken helicopter rides from Guptkashi, Sirsi and Phata, while 54,209 have returned from Kedarnath to these helipads. Uttarakhand CM launches dedicated Yoga Policy on occasion of 11th International Yoga Day
Chamoli (Uttarakhand) [India], June 21 (ANI): Uttarakhand has made history by becoming the first state in India to implement a dedicated Yoga Policy, following its pioneering efforts in introducing the Uniform Civil Code. The Pushkar Singh Dhami-led cabinet on Saturday approved this landmark initiative, aiming to establish Uttarakhand as a global hub for yoga and wellness. The Yoga Policy has been prepared with the aim of establishing Uttarakhand as the global capital of yoga and wellness under which a subsidy of up to Rs 20 lakh is being provided for developing yoga and meditation centers in the state. A provision of grants up to Rs 10 lakh has also been made to promote research in the field of yoga, meditation and naturopathy in the state. With the inspiration of the Prime Minister, the state government has implemented the country's first Yoga Policy 2025 in the state. The Chief Minister further stated that the state government is determined to establish five new yoga hubs in the state by 2030 and by March 2026, the availability of yoga services will also be ensured in all AYUSH Health and Wellness Centers in the state. The CM also planted an apple tree in the Vidhan Sabha premises under the 'Ek Vriksha Yoga ke Naam' program. During this, the Chief Minister announced that the state government would soon establish one Spiritual Economic Zone each in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to promote Ayurvedic and Naturopathy, Yoga and Spiritual Tourism in the state. IndiGo Srinagar turbulence NEW DELHI: The directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) has ordered 'corrective training' for the pilots operating IndiGo Delhi-Srinagar flight (6E 2142) of May 21, 2025, which had suffered severe turbulence. The Airbus A321 had encountered a hailstorm enroute and then it had landed safely at Srinagar after declaring an emergency with its radome (nose cone) damaged. 'We have probed this incident. Subsequent to that, we have ordered corrective training for the pilots and also issued a revised operation circular for adverse weather operations to enhance flight safety,' said a senior DGCA official. The revised circular issued indicates the probe found the flight should not have continued its journey to Srinagar through bad weather patch that day. 'Flight crew are advised to maintain heightened vigilance, with an emphasis on safety taking precedence over schedule adherence. Captains are encouraged to initiate diversions or air-turn-backs, as required by prevailing conditions,' it says while 'highlighting the growing impact of climate change on operational unpredictability.' The circular says: ' Visual illusion awareness during approach and landing: The revised guidance highlights visual illusions that may occur during night operations in rain or on wet runways. Pilots are reminded to cross-check visual cues with instruments to ensure accurate approach and landing assessments. Mandatory Scenario-Based and Simulator Training: Operators are encouraged to incorporate scenario-based training focused on adverse weather decision-making and the application of threat and error management (TEM) principles. This training is being reinforced through recurrent simulator sessions. Emphasis on pilot weather reports (PIREPs): The value of timely and accurate pilot reports is reaffirmed, with all operators encouraged to foster a reporting culture that enhances collective awareness of in-flight weather conditions. Strict adherence to relevant Civil Aviation Requirements (CARs) particularly those pertaining to Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), diversion procedures, and harmonized reporting practices, is reiterated to Airlines / Aircraft Operators and flight crew.'
