Jaiswal told me he just wanted to score runs in England: Jurel reveals conversation during India A matches
New Delhi: India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's superb century at Headingley against England in the first Test of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy may have earned him plaudits on the field, but it was a post-match video shared by the BCCI that offered fans a rare, candid glimpse into the mindset behind the performance.
The 23-year-old's 101 off 159 balls - featuring 16 boundaries and a six - was not just a stylish statement but a testament to grit. In challenging English conditions, with the ball seaming and swinging early on, Jaiswal dug deep, overcame painful cramps in both hands and stitched a crucial 129-run stand with new captain Shubman Gill.
In a conversation with long-time teammate and close friend Dhruv Jurel, Jaiswal reflected on his preparation, pressure, and mental clarity that powered him to yet another milestone overseas.
'When we were playing for India A, you told me you just have to score runs in England no matter what,' Jurel said. 'Even when the ball was moving a lot, you wanted the same challenge in the nets. I think that stubbornness is what makes you different. I've seen it since we were kids.'
Jaiswal responded, 'You tell them. I don't do much. When I need to be serious, I stay serious. I focus on my preparation and try to keep my mind calm. That really helps me.'
'Whenever I come here, I just want to give my best for my team and my country,' Jaiswal said. 'I really enjoy practising alone and preparing myself. I try to make sure every ball I face in practice helps me when I'm in tough situations.'
He also recalled a pivotal moment from the India A build-up to the series. 'Harshit Rana and Bumrah bhai were bowling really well. I wasn't scoring runs easily but I kept playing. That gave me a lot of confidence and belief that I can survive and get through tough phases.'
Jaiswal's hundred in Leeds has now made him the batter with a century in his first Tests in the West Indies, Australia, and England.
Alongside him, Shubman Gill marked a memorable start to his Test captaincy with an unbeaten 127, showing poise and precision throughout. Rishabh Pant also brought his flair to the crease, remaining not out on 65 as India finished Day 1 in a commanding position at 359/3.

ENG vs IND: Bumrah is world's best, extremely hard to face
England opener Ben Duckett has hailed Jasprit Bumrah as the best bowler in the world after the Indian pace ace produced a masterclass under the lights on Day 2 of the first Test at Headingley. Bumrah claimed all three wickets to fall in England's innings, including that of Duckett himself, as the visitors kept pressure on despite a strong English response. Duckett full of praise for Bumrah "Bumrah is extremely difficult to face, especially when he's charging in downhill under the lights and swinging it both ways," Duckett said at stumps on Saturday. "He's got so many variations, be it a bouncer, yorker, slower one, or either swing, and he gives away no cues. You have to be locked in completely to face him." Despite Bumrah's brilliance, England ended the day on 209/3 in reply to India's imposing 471, with Ollie Pope leading the resistance. The right-hander played a composed and courageous knock, reaching an unbeaten 100 to steady England's innings. Duckett, who scored a fluent 62 before falling to Bumrah, was full of praise for Pope's temperament under testing conditions. 'He came in with Bumrah in full flow and didn't flinch. He stayed true to his style. You could see what that century meant to him and everyone in the dressing room. I had goosebumps watching him raise his bat.' There had been murmurs about Pope's place in the 11, despite a recent 171 against Zimbabwe, but Duckett believes those doubts have been firmly laid to rest. "We don't let outside noise creep into the dressing room, but obviously we hear it. Inside, there was never any doubt. A guy who scores 171 a few weeks back deserves his spot. Pope's composure and performance today proves exactly why he's our number three." With England still trailing by 262 runs, Day 3 promises to be a crucial one in the context of this gripping Test battle.

Sourav Ganguly desires a return to Team India, this time as coach: 'Gautam Gambhir has started off little slow...'
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly isn't ruling out the idea of coaching the Indian men's team. Ganguly, who has worn multiple hats post-retirement, from commentator to BCCI president, said he's 'open' to taking on the role in the future. Sourav Ganguly (L) hasn't ruled out a possibility of reuniting with Team India(PTI/ANI) 'I never really thought about it because I got into different roles,' Ganguly told PTI. 'I finished (competitive cricket) in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) President. We'll see what the future holds. I'm just 50 (53), so let's see what happens. I'm open to it. We'll see where it goes.' Ganguly, who has been Team Director at Delhi Capitals between 2018-19 and 2022-24, believes his biggest contribution to Indian cricket in administration came in the women's game. 'I got into different roles… but I think my biggest contribution was to promote women's cricket,' he said. While the topic of a future coaching role remains open, Ganguly was firm on another front, politics. 'I am not interested,' he said when asked whether he would consider joining a political party ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections. Even when asked if he would consider it if promised the post of Chief Minister, Ganguly replied again with a smile: 'I am not interested.' Ganguly on Gambhir The former captain also gave a measured endorsement of Gautam Gambhir, who succeeded Rahul Dravid as head coach earlier this year. 'Gautam (Gambhir) is doing a good job,' Ganguly said. 'He started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but he picked up with the Champions Trophy. This is going to be a big series (vs England).' Ganguly was asked whether Gambhir, his former teammate, is a strong tactician. 'I haven't seen him from very close in this role, but I know he is very passionate. I haven't observed his strategies closely because I haven't worked with him as a coach,' he said. 'He's very straightforward, he sees things clearly, and he's very open about what he feels — about the team, players, people, everything. From the outside, you can tell he's a very transparent person — what you see is what you get.' Ganguly recalled playing alongside Gambhir during their international days. 'He was a great guy with a lot of respect for me and the senior players. Even now, I can see he is extremely passionate about his job.' 'I wish him all the best,' Ganguly added. 'He's just a year into the job, and this will be an important (England) tour. He struggled a bit in Australia, but just like everyone else, he'll learn, he'll grow, and he'll become better.'
