The Telangana government is making big efforts in energy transition, sustainable urban planning and technology-driven environmental initiatives, Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu said here on Thursday.
It also offers a conducive investment environment that favours innovation, energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, he said, inviting industries that align with such values to make Telangana their preferred destination.
Addressing the inaugural session of two-day GreenCo Summit 2025 of CII GreenCo Council that got underway here, the Minister said this while highlighting a multi-pronged approach pursued by the government, which includes the target of generating 20,000 MW of green energy by 2030. The State's Clean Energy Policy seeks to achieve this by encouraging solar, wind, floating solar and hydro energy as well as energy storage projects. The policy is also eyeing 1,418 KTPA green hydrogen projects by 2030.
Mr. Sridhar Babu also underscored the need for States with a strong IT industry like Telangana to strike a balance between development and environmental protection, especially in the context of power-guzzling data centres that are a must for harnessing the potential of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence. Over time, with government support industries should adopt green measures in the process making the pollution control boards redundant, he said.
GreenCo Rating Platinum Awards for excellence in environmental performance, energy efficiency and green manufacturing practices were presented to more than 60 companies. An exhibition of green products, technologies and services forms part of the event. CII Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre Chairman Jamshyd N Godrej, CII Vice President Suchitra K Ella and CII GreenCo Council Chairman Pradeep Bhargava were among those spoke at the inaugural session.

Denied permission for US visit, Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge says will seek explanation from MEA
After the Ministry of External Affairs denied him permission to lead a delegation to the United States seeking investments in Karnataka, IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge said on Thursday that he would write to the MEA for an explanation besides requesting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kharge, who had sought permission to visit the US from June 14 to 27, said the delegation from the Karnataka IT/BT department had fixed appointments with various company heads and think tanks in New York and Boston. 'Had we sent a proposal (to the MEA) at the last minute, it was natural to be rejected. But we had planned it in advance,' he said. The proposal for the delegation was cleared by the chief minister in the first week of May, following which it was sent to the MEA on May 15. 'On June 4, it was rejected. We have no problem if the visit is denied due to some reasons… But on June 6, I withdrew my name and sent only the list of the delegation of officers attending the trip. One June 11 it was cleared despite having the same officers and same minute-to-minute programme,' he said. The delegation, without Kharge, is scheduled to have around 30 meetings during its US visit. On June 12, Kharge told a news conference, he sent the name of Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Chairman and MLA Sharath Bachegowda as the leader of the delegation, and the proposal was cleared by June 14. 'We will not let it go. (We) will write to MEA seeking a valid explanation on why permission was denied. If they had real concerns they should have put it on paper. If approving a delegation after the minister's name is removed is not politics, then what is?' he said. The Congress leader said ministers from other southern states such as Telangana and Tamil Nadu were also denied permission to lead delegations seeking investment. 'I will also request the CM to write to the PM… This is not healthy. As the Government of India, you have all the right to correct us. But if you don't give us a valid reason, then we will consider it as politics,' he added. On his recent trip to France, Kharge said he was there on an invitation by the organisers of the Paris Air Show. 'I had not met any government officials. Just think tanks and the people who had invited me. For that, concurrence was not required from the MEA,' he said.

Officials told to spread awareness about ‘doorstep ration delivery for elderly'
Pushpa Amarnath, Vice-Chairperson, Karnataka State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee, said on Wednesday that provisions are in place for doorstep delivery of ration to cardholders aged 80 years and above and instructed Gram Panchayats to create awareness and ensure that eligible beneficiaries avail themselves of the facility. Speaking at the guarantee schemes' progress review meeting in Pandavapura, Ms. Amarnath addressed concerns related to the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. She noted that benefits to 1,422 women in the district had been withheld after being mistakenly flagged as Income Tax (IT) or GST payers. 'If it is confirmed that these beneficiaries are not actual taxpayers, the issue will be taken up at the State level and resolved, ensuring 100% implementation,' she said. Elaborating on the State government's commitment to food security, she said, 'No poor person should suffer from hunger under any circumstances. It is with this vision that the government has given top priority to the Anna Bhagya scheme.' She stressed that fair price shops must maintain both quantity and quality in food distribution and instructed officials to carry out surprise inspections to ensure compliance. 'No poor family should be denied government benefits,' Ms. Amarnath said. Deputy Commissioner Kumar said both rice and ragi are being supplied as part of the ration distribution and assured that the process will be completed within the next two days. A PAN card is not mandatory to open a bank account, he clarified. 'Necessary directions will be issued after consulting lead bank officials,' he added. Referring to 1,422 women flagged under Gruha Lakshmi, Zilla Panchayat CEO K.R. Nandini said that confirmation has been received from the GST and Income Tax departments that these women are not taxpayers. Committee member Rudrappa pointed out that linking PAN and Aadhaar during bank transactions is leading to incorrect classification of individuals as taxpayers, which needs to be addressed. During her visit, Ms. Amarnath met Jayalakshmamma, a vendor who sells flowers, fruits, and pooja items at the Pandavapura Railway Station with the help of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. Ms. Jayalakshmamma said, 'The Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti schemes have been helpful for me. I am able to save ₹100 to ₹150 daily, thanks to the Shakti scheme. I sincerely thank the State government for the support.' The Vice-Chairperson felicitated Ms. Jayalakshmamma with a garland and congratulated her.

10-hour working day proposal faces private employees' wrath in Karnataka
BENGALURU: The Karnataka government's proposal to increase work hours for private firms from the existing nine hours to 10 hours a day is facing stiff opposition from employees of private firms, including the IT/ITeS employees' association. They have threatened to stage protests and approach the courts. State labour department officials led by Labour Secretary Rohini Sindhuri interacted with various labour organisations as there is a proposal to bring an amendment to the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, 1961, to fix work time as 10 hours. The government also proposes to increase overtime (OT) from maximum 10 hours to 12 hours a day. The employees also fear that the proposed amendment will allow companies to opt for a two-shift system, instead of the existing three-shift system. 'This means, one third of the workforce will be thrown out of employment,'' a release from the association stated. Suhas Adiga, general secretary of the Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) noted that as per the State of Emotional Wellbeing Report 2024, 90 per cent of corporate employees in India under the age of 25 are struggling with anxiety. Due to work pressure, there have been suicides and deaths in the corporate sector, he pointed out. According to the release from the IT/ITeS association, the proposed amendment shows that the Karnataka government is unwilling to recognise workers as human beings who require personal and social lives to survive. 'Instead, it views them merely as machines to increase the profits of the corporates it serves,'' it stated. KITU urged the government to reconsider this move and warned that any attempt to proceed with the amendment will be seen as a direct challenge to the 20 lakh employees working in the IT/ITeS sector in Karnataka. KITU has called upon all IT/ITeS employees to unite and stand together to resist this 'inhuman attempt to impose modern-day slavery upon us'', it added.
