Bengals' x-factor for 2025 NFL season flying under the radar
When it comes to x-factors in 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals have a few who come to mind.
Think, someone like rookie Demetrius Knight being able to step in and help on the defense right away. Or the front office when it comes to solving the contract standoffs with both Trey Hendrickson and rookie Shemar Stewart.
Somewhat joking about the front office aside, another key x-factor is second-year offensive tackle Amarius Mims, who just found himself spotlighted as such by Pro Football Focus' Max Chadwick and Dalton Wasserman:
"The Bengals had the second-lowest-graded offensive line in the league, finishing above only the Patriots. The unit remains mostly the same from 2024, and the player whom most are expecting to make a jump is right tackle Amarius Mims. The 2024 first-round pick mostly had a rookie season to forget, placing 67th among all tackles with a 57.8 PFF overall grade. If he doesn't experience a sophomore breakout, Cincinnati's offensive line could struggle mightily once again."

The Bengals are certainly counting on Mims to make a second-year leap and stay on the field. They could also trot out two new starters at guard with free-agent arrival Lucas Patrick and rookie Dylan Fairchild.
Arguably more than anything, the Bengals hope that a new-look coaching staff overseeing the offensive trenches offers a big solution too, helping to get the most out of their guys while finally developing some of their own draft picks properly.

Fellow LSU alumni and New York Giants dynamo Malik Nabers wasn't too far behind despite bottom-barrel quarterbacking, and it seems like every offseason offers a new batch of studs to choose from. And yet, none of them hold a candle to Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran Mike Evans' production. Only Jerry Rice has as many consecutive 1,000-yard seasons (11) as Evans, and the greatest receiver to ever live is the only player with more quadruple-digit campaigns. Nobody is touching that mark any time soon; it's a matter of circumstance, luck, and a whole lot of talent. If anyone is going to break it, Chase and his connection with quarterback Joe Burrow might have the best chance. Advertisement The Buccaneers legend revealed his take on Chase in an interview with Greg Auman. 'Ja'Marr Chase. He's a guy where if you said he was better than me — I don't think anybody's better than me — but if you said him, I would understand,' Evans said. There's a very real chance that Chase's peak is greater than Evans'. The latter has never led the league in receiving or receptions. Chase did so in 2024. He also picked up a first-team All-Pro selection this past season, something Evans hasn't done through his 11-year career. For what it's worth, Chase has a long way to go to match Evans' streak of 11 seasons. He's logged at least 1,000 yards in his first four seasons. The aforementioned Burrow certainly helps his chances, as does a running mate in receiver Tee Higgins who takes some attention away. Chase will have to stay healthy to hit those marks, but few will doubt his ability to produce those kinds of seasons. Advertisement Perhaps Evans' ability to remain consistent with Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Baker Mayfield, and a host of other passers makes his record even more impressive. Chase will hope to take one step closer to Evans this year, although Cincinnati and Tampa Bay won't play in the 2025 regular season. Dillon Wade was a valuable piece to Auburn's offensive line in 2024 by playing over 100 snaps at three different positions last season. Wade spent the majority of last season playing left tackle, where he totaled 379 snaps. Outside of tackle, he provided help at left guard and right tackle by playing 254 and 116 snaps, respectively. And with the weight of his recent contract extension weighing on the Jaguars, and Jacksonville hungry to get back to playoff-caliber football, it makes sense that Lawrence was recently included on Pro Football Focus' list of 10 NFL players with the most to prove in 2025. He ranked in the top 15 among NFL quarterbacks in PFF overall grade in his second and third seasons in the league but placed only 19th in 2024 (76.8). That came on the heels of his contract extension last offseason, which made him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL but simultaneously put him under pressure to play at a higher level," PFF wrote. Lawrence will have the weapons surrounding him to succeed, with big targets in second-season wideout Brian Thomas Jr. -- who had over 1,200 receiving yards as a rookie -- and the second overall 2025 NFL Draft selection Travis Hunter. Whether or not Lawrence can live up to the version of his game we saw in 2022, when he passed for 4,113 yards and 25 touchdowns, remains to be seen. But if he can't rekindle that success, it might not bold well for his future in the NFL.
