KTMB receives two of 10 new ETS train sets, testing underway

BUTTERWORTH: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has received two out of 10 new Electric Train Service (ETS) sets, worth RM400 million, which are expected to be gradually deployed for operations starting next year.
ETS and Intercity Services general manager Nurul Azha Mokmin said that both train sets are currently undergoing testing and commissioning.
She said that the acquisition of the new train sets aims to enhance both the quality and capacity of the ETS service, which continues to see strong demand.
'ETS passenger numbers grow by about 10 per cent annually, indicating high user satisfaction. With the upcoming completion of the Gemas (Negeri Sembilan) to Johor Bahru (Johor) route, KTMB plans to expand ETS services to several new destinations.
'We have procured 10 ETS train sets, which are expected to operate on the Gemas-Johor Bahru route, beginning next year. Subsequently, new routes from Johor Bahru to Butterworth and Padang Besar (Perlis) will also be introduced,' she said.
She said this to reporters after officiating the Ruby Lounge at Butterworth Station, an exclusive waiting area for ETS Business Class passengers, and attending the distribution of Aidiladha souvenir packs by KTMB chief technical officer Ahmad Nizam Mohamed Amin.
She added that over 250,000 ETS and Intercity train tickets, including additional tickets released for the Aidiladha celebration, had been sold as of yesterday, since sales began on May 29.
She said this included the sale of 119,000 tickets for the Ekspres Selatan service, which covers the Johor Bahru-Gemas route, and remains in high demand.
'KTMB is also continuing its special service, the Ekspres Lambaian Aidiladha, for the KL Sentral-Tumpat and Tumpat-KL Sentral routes, as in previous years. This year, the service offers two trips, with a total of 872 tickets available,' she said.
One-way fares range from RM80 to RM95, with options including premier and superior class seating, superior class sleeping coaches, as well as 'chillax' and cafe coaches for added passenger comfort.
As of now, she said that 762 out of the 872 tickets have been sold. The train is scheduled to depart tonight and return to KL Sentral on June 8.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has apologised for the disruption to the Electric Train Service (ETS) and KTM Komuter services between Kampar and Slim River since Friday, which has since been fully resolved. Operations resumed as normal this afternoon. KTMB said the disruption began at 5.44pm Friday due to a power supply issue affecting the overhead lines, resulting in several train services being delayed from their original schedules. 'Train movements along the affected route had to proceed on a single track on a rotational basis to ensure safety and smooth operations. 'This caused delays of more than 60 minutes for eight ETS services and two KTM Komuter services,' KTMB said in a statement. As an immediate measure, passengers were notified via SMS, and continuous updates were provided through KTMB's official social media platforms. Additionally, KTMB staff distributed food and drinks to passengers who experienced delays of more than two hours at stations and onboard trains. KTMB said its electrification team was promptly deployed to carry out repairs, with full restoration completed by 5pm yesterday. ETS from Gemas to JB to spur tourism

JOHOR BARU: The extension of KTM Bhd's ETS services from Gemas to Johor Baru will improve connectivity to further stimulate the country's tourism industry, say tourism officials. Tourism Malaysia deputy director-general (promotion) Datuk Musa Yusof said the time savings offered by this service, expected to take passengers from KL Sentral to JB Sentral in four hours, augurs well for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). 'The ETS will connect Johor Baru straight to Kuala Lumpur and this will definitely help strengthen the industry, especially in terms of tourist movement, allowing them to visit more places. 'If they stay the night for cultural events such as this, it will also help increase hotel occupancy rates here,' he said. Musa added that the spillover effects from the ETS, which reached Segamat in March, could already be seen. 'We can already see Segamat benefiting from this, especially during the durian season,' he said after officiating a Gawai and Kaamatan Festival celebration at a hotel here. On another matter, Musa said that Tourism Malaysia has also been working closely with industry players, including hotels, to promote VM2026. 'We have been having engagement sessions with industry players from north to south to ensure that we are fully prepared for VM2026. 'Among issues that were brought up was the need for stronger collaboration to promote our initiatives, and we've been encouraging industry players to leverage digital media to reach a wider audience,' he said, adding that this preparation involves making sure that tour guides and hotels are fully equipped and ready to provide top-notch services for visitors. Meanwhile, Malaysian Asso­ciation of Hotels Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo said the ETS will significantly improve connectivity and give a much-needed boost to tourism. 'One of the most positive developments is the train, which is not just beneficial for domestic travellers, but also for foreign tourists,' he said. Teo added that the improved logistics will make Johor Baru more attractive not only as a destination but also as a gateway to other towns like Segamat and Kluang. 'Logistics is the foundation of tourism. Without good accessibility, it's hard to attract tourists. 'With this, we'll see more people coming, especially during the year-end school holidays,' he added. It is understood that the Phase 2 of the extension of the southern ETS will be from Segamat to Kluang, while Phase 3 will see the train going past Kluang to Johor Baru. However, to date, KTMB has not released any ETS schedule to Johor Baru, the expected journey time from Segamat to Johor Baru, or the expected opening date for the service. In its latest release of advance ticket sales of up to November, no ETS tickets were offered for journeys beyond Segamat.

Deputy Director General (Promotion) Datuk Musa Yusof said the timing of the ETS completion aligns well with preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. "The ETS will connect Johor Baru directly to Kuala Lumpur, which will strengthen the industry, especially in terms of tourist movement. "It will allow visitors to travel between these two places in about three and a half hours, enabling them to visit more locations. "If they stay the night for cultural events such as this, it will also help increase hotel occupancy rates," he said. He added that the spillover effects of the ETS, which has reached Segamat since March, are already visible. "We can already see Segamat benefiting from this, especially during the durian season," he said at a press conference after officiating a Gawai and Kaamatan Festival celebration at a hotel here. In March, Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that two sets of ETS trains from China were expected to arrive in April and would be operational by August after undergoing necessary trials. He mentioned that the trains, along with another eight sets, are being assembled in Batu Gajah, Perak, and will complete the southern route of the line, following the start of the ETS service at Segamat station in Johor on 15 March. 'We don't have to wait for all 10 sets to start operating; we will use whichever set is completed. "For Gemas to Johor Baru, there will be three phases - Phase 1 to Segamat, Phase 2 to Kluang, and Phase 3 to JB Sentral,' he said after travelling on the ETS from KL Sentral to Segamat station in March.
