Charles Oliveira: UFC 317 title win over Ilia Topuria 'is already written'
Charles Oliveira firmly believes the champion will once again have a name after he dispatches Ilia Topuria at UFC 317.
Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) has the chance to become the first two-time titleholder in lightweight history when he takes on former featherweight champ Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the International Fight Week headliner on June 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view).
Many were hopeful that Topuria's move up would come against Islam Makhachev, who instead vacated to move up to welterweight and face Jack Della Maddalena. That left the need for someone to fight for the vacant strap, and Oliveira finds himself back in a familiar spot.
It will be a record third time Oliveira has fought for vacant gold in his UFC tenure, with previous bouts coming against Makhachev and Michael Chandler. Even if he's not fighting to take the belt off someone, it's special nevertheless.
"It's a title fight in the end – it doesn't matter if there's a champion or there isn't one," Oliveira told MMA Junkie through an interpreter on Wednesday. "It's a title fight, and you've got to go in there and win. It's for sure (exciting), especially the hype that he's coming with. He's undefeated. It's something that makes it even more exciting."
Since Topuria first broached the topic of giving up his 145-pound belt and moving up to 155 pounds in February, Oliveira has only shown respect toward "El Matador."
That hasn't been reciprocated in the lead up to UFC 317, however, with Topuria taking shots at Oliveira's fighting skills and intelligence. The Brazilian feels the disrespect, and he plans some redemption of his own on fight night.
"He has definitely not treated me with the same respect," Oliveira said. "I don't know (why). He's been saying a lot, but the fact of the matter is we're going to find out on June 28. Everyone knows who the real the champion is."
Oliveira said his one interaction with Topuria at UFC 312 in Sydney was pleasant and uneventful, with the pair even posing for a photo together. But now, when they finally get face-to-face for a staredown at Thursday's pre-event press conference, they will find out "who the real one is."
Oliveira, 35, is arguably the most decorated fighter in UFC history. He holds a plethora of all-time records including most stoppage wins, most submission wins and most fight-night bonuses, and now he's on the doorstep of entrenching himself further in the record books against who many see as the UFC's next rising star in Topuria.
"I just want to win," Oliveira said. "It's meant to be. It's already written."

Club World Cup stunners continue as Flamengo shocks Chelsea 3-1

Danilo scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute and Flamengo scored three second-half goals to move atop its group at the Club World Cup with a 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Friday. Both teams went into the match with three points atop Group D with opening-match wins. Flamengo will have to wait to see the results of the late match between LAFC and Esperance to see if it has secured a spot in the knockout round. With Flamengo's win, South American teams were undefeated at the Club World Cup in nine matches. Pedro Neto gave Chelsea the early lead. The ball bounced off a Flamengo defender and Neto gained control, charging toward the goal before putting it away in the 13th minute. Flamengo drew even in the 62nd on Bruno Henrique's goal on a tap-in in front of the goal. Moments later, the Brazilian giants took the lead off a corner with Danilo's goal. Wallace Yan all but put the game out of reach for the Blues with a goal in the 83rd. The Blues, the 2021 Club World Cup winner, defeated LAFC 2-0 in their opening match in Atlanta. Flamengo downed Esperance 2-0 in its opener. Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis currently coaches Flamengo, while former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho made his debut for Flamengo against Esperance. Down just 2-1, Chelsea still had a chance, but Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th with a straight red just four minutes after replacing Liam Delap, who got his first start for Chelsea after making his debut for the Blues in the tournament opener. Flamengo is in good position to move on to the round of 16, but it needs a win or a tie by Esperance to secure it. Chelsea plays Esperance on Tuesday in Philadelphia while Flamengo plays LAFC in Orlando, Florida. Henrique was named the Man of the Match, and said the face that there was a large contingent of red-clad Flamengo fans among the 54,019 at Lincoln Financial Field wasn't lost on him or his teammates in the pivotal second half. "I noticed that we had the advantage. We had the fans on our side," Henrique said. "And that's when we started to pressure." Reporting by The Associated Press. ESPN writer Brian Windhorst explains why Ace Bailey is a 'dangerous' prospect

Former Rutgers forward Ace Bailey is no longer considered a lock to be a top-five pick in the 2025 NBA draft after declining several workout requests, prompting ESPN senior writer Brian Windhorst to label him a "dangerous" prospect. Bailey, who has yet to visit any team, canceled a workout on Friday with the Philadelphia 76ers, who select third. The prevailing thought is that Bailey and his representation are declining workouts to ensure he lands with a specific team that can offer him a significant role to maximize his development. The 6-foot-8 standout has consistently been projected to be the third or fourth pick by most mock drafts. However, Bailey is falling down draft boards and could now be selected in the 3-8 range on Wednesday, which, as Windhorst explained Friday on "NBA Today," could be problematic for front offices. Every year, there is a dangerous prospect in the draft; he is a dangerous prospect. He is, obviously, incredibly talented: You draft him, it could be a grand slam. You pass on him, and somebody else drafts him, you might have it all over your face. If you draft him and it doesn't work out because of these concerns, that could get you fired. ... I think the team that gets him will be a team with a general manager who is very safe in his job, who says, 'Trust me. I believe in this player.' Bailey was a third-team All-Big Ten selection, averaging 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and one steal on 34.6% shooting from 3-point range. He ranked ninth among all freshmen in points (527) and 10th in rebounds (215). The 18-year-old measured slightly smaller than expected at the draft combine last month, after Rutgers listed him at 6 feet, 10 inches. Teams were also displeased with his apparent lack of preparation and focus at the combine, factors that have also hurt his draft stock. Bailey is highly touted because of his size, scoring and instincts on both ends of the court. He still projects to be a potential franchise cornerstone at the next level, though he may not be selected as high as initially thought after a precarious predraft process.

Stephen A. Smith Facing Backlash After Cameras Catch Him During NBA Finals

Stephen A. Smith Facing Backlash After Cameras Catch Him During NBA Finals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. ESPN "First Take" and "NBA Countdown" host Stephen A. Smith has been, as usual, turning heads with his opinions on the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2025 NBA Finals. Advertisement In particular, he took offense to Tyrese Haliburton criticizing the way people like him in the media cover the NBA. Before Game 4, he stated on "First Take" that "players far more accomplished and far more superior have made their efforts trying to call me out. How has that worked out?" Then, as Haliburton and the Pacers battled the Thunder in a thrilling Game 4 on Friday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Smith was caught by a fan's camera doing something that would be hard for even him to talk his way out of. ESPN's Stephen A. SmithKirby Lee-Imagn Images Social media users were furious when they saw the photo of the $100 million ESPN star that went viral during Game 4. Advertisement A fan at the game looked down and took a photo of him appearing to play solitaire on his phone during the game. Though it was unclear when the photo was taken, the crowd in the background was standing up and appeared to be engaged in the action on the court, unlike Smith. "How can you have all of these opinions while you're playing solitaire instead of watching the game @stephenasmith?" the user said. "This who @espn paying 100 million," said another harsh fan. "They pay him to be an entertainer, not an analyst," another critic said on X. "When you look at it that way, it all makes sense. ESPN continues to be a joke." Advertisement "Please let this absolutely explode, modern day media is TERRIBLE," wrote a jaded fan. In the end, the Thunder evened the series at 2-2 with a massive 111-104 win before heading back to Oklahoma City for Game 5 on Monday.
