Yong Teck Lee
KOTA KINABALU (May 20): Nominated assembyman Datuk Yong Teck Lee said his office will continue to serve the public even though the annual minor projects grant of RM100,000 has been discontinued for this year.
'It is with a heavy heart that I have to make it known to the hopeful applicants, who have been waiting since last year for minor projects to be done this year, that there are no minor projects grants this year.
Any of the usual development applications (such as bus stops, playground repairs, concrete drains, and for roof zincs, water tanks, polypipes and so on) received by my office will be forwarded to the relevant authorities such as the City Hall (DBKK), Public Works Department (JKR), Rural Development Ministry and Chief Minister's Department,' he said in a statement on Tuesday.
In case of any development and minor projects that are urgent, Yong advised the residents of Kota Kinabalu to seek grants from the government elected assemblypersons who have been allocated RM3 million to RM4 million per ADUN per constituency of Inanam, Likas, Api Api, Luyang and Kapayan for the year 2025.
The annual grant for 2023 and 2024 was RM3 million for each of the elected assemblymen.
'I understand that the members of parliament of Kota Kinabalu and Sepanggar (government MPs) have their own federal grants of a few million ringgit each.
'As for annual minor projects grants of RM100,000 allocated to nominated assemblyman for the years 2021, 2022, 2023 (RM50,000 expended) and 2024, these grants have been expended on Jalan Damai bus stop with solar lights, repairs and upgrading of Taman Likas playground, repairs of Taman Likas Jaya playground, repairs of basketball court and playground at Dah Yeh Villa.
'Other minor projects included covered concrete drains and walkway at Likas Park and road repairs at Kampung Kopungit. Water tanks, polypipes, roof zincs and plywood have been distributed to flood victims, fire victims in the Kota Kinabalu area and villagers at Signal Hill, Fung Yi Ting/Dah Yeh Villa, Taman Keramat, Kg Likas, and Kg Unggun (Menggatal),' he said.
Yong added all work done was based on specifications and the Bill of Quantities of DBKK.

Encouraging developments in Sabah's commitment to clean governance

Letter to Editor I was delighted to read the recent article in Focus Malaysia titled ' GRS-ruled Sabah State Government Puts Public Trust First as Graft-Buster MACC Acts ' (published June 20, 2025). The report fills me with hope that my concerns regarding the Land and Survey Department (LJS), the Sabah Housing and Urban Development Board (LPPB), and the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) may finally be addressed. The article highlights Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's commitment to clean governance and strengthening integrity among government members and public servants. This is truly heartening, and I look forward to seeing how the Integrity Department will respond to my complaints about DBKK's lack of response to multiple emails I sent since 2022. It is also reassuring to read that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition upholds the rule of law without shielding anyone from scrutiny. I hope this extends to investigating LPPB's non-response to my emails and the unclear delays by LJS in sharing the results of the spot level survey conducted in June 2023, pending approval from an unspecified 'authority'. Additionally, I urge a review of how DBKK issued the occupancy certificate for the Vistana Heights project based on allegedly falsified as-built survey and development plans. The article's emphasis on due process and the courts delivering justice is commendable. However, I wonder if ordinary citizens should have to resort to legal action to address such issues, potentially tarnishing the government's reputation due to the actions of a few. The state's cooperation with enforcement agencies and its focus on accountability are promising steps. As the article notes, 'The strength of GRS lies not in avoiding challenges but in responding to them with principle, clarity, and purpose.' I couldn't agree more and hope this signals a new era of transparency and responsiveness in Sabah's governance. Thank you for highlighting these developments. ‒ June 23, 2025 Luqman Michel Kota Kinabalu, Sabah The views expressed are solely of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of Focus Malaysia. Malaysia aims to discharge 200,000 bankruptcies by 2025

SHAH ALAM: The government is targeting 200,000 individuals to be discharged from bankruptcy by the end of this year. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that so far, approximately 186,000 individuals have been successfully released from the problem. She said the record was obtained by the Malaysian Insolvency Department following the government's efforts in giving a second chance to the affected group to continue their lives. 'We hope by the end of the year, we can give a calculation (people released from bankruptcy status). So in total we hope to target 200,000 this year,' she said. She told reporters after the launch of the Financial Literacy Programme for Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) and Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) in 2025 by Malaysian Insolvency Department at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam today. Also present was UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Shabuddin. When tabling Budget 2025, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar said the Second Chance Policy would be expanded to young people aged 40 and below who have debts not exceeding RM200,000 starting last year. Meanwhile, Azalina said a total of 25,578 bankruptcy cases were recorded from 2021 to May 2025 from the age of under 25 to 55 and above. Of that total, she said, 10,145 bankruptcy cases were recorded involving the 35 to 44 age group. She said that by gender, men recorded higher bankruptcy cases than women, at 18,590 during the same period. Meanwhile, Azalina said the programme organised today was one of the proactive steps taken by the MADANI government in bringing laws and knowledge related to financial management and literacy to the people, especially students of higher learning institutions who are about to enter the working world. About 1,000 students from public and private universities and colleges were involved in the one-day programme.
