Back then, it employed just three people, stocking 500 product lines. The first Irish store, located just off Molesworth Street in Dublin, was opened in 1999. Five to try: fruity Verdicchios are the perfect summer sip
Translating as 'little green one', this greenish grape produces both easy-drinking, fruity quaffers and more complex age-worthy styles that see it starring in some of Italy's finest white wines. Both styles are often led by peachy fruits, but with the more serious expressions leaning into the variety's capacity for oily texture to produce weightier gastronomic wines. Many carry signature notes of almonds, whether a bite of bitter almond or richer marzipan or toasted nuts. And Verdicchio's high natural acidity makes for delightful summer refreshers and versatile food pairings alike. The best-known expressions come from Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC in the hilly Marche region, just inland from eastern Italy's Adriatic coast near Ancona, where vineyards have a mix of calcareous, clay and limestone-rich soils. 'Riserva' indicates the superior appellation of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva DOCG and specifies wines that have been aged for at least 18 months. 'Classico' signifies a subzone of the oldest vineyards close to the town of Jesi, which is surrounded by many medieval fortified villages (hence the 'Castelli' of the title). The lesser-spotted Verdicchio dei Matelica DOC is further inland towards the Umbrian border, where higher altitudes and a continental climate make for a more aromatic, mineral style. Verdicchio also turns up in Veneto in north-eastern Italy, where it is known as Trebbiano di Soave and features as a blending varietal alongside Garganega in Soave DOC wines produced near Lake Garda. Today's recommendations are all from the Marche. Three are from Fazi Battaglia, a historic winery that, in 1953, introduced the distinctive amphora-shaped bottle that made Verdicchio so easily spotted on shelves for many years. The shape became somewhat associated with cheap and cheerful if thin and light expressions (Aldi currently has Verdicchio at €7.99 that ticks those boxes) so when some Marche producers began to shift focus onto quality Verdicchio, many embraced a standard bottle shape. Fazi Battaglia also produces Verdicchio under its Tenute San Sisto label. Today's wine of the week and its little sister 'Massaccio' (€22.50) are imported directly by Little Italy just off Dublin's Smithfield Square, where you can browse the shelves with the expert guidance of manager Martina Delaney, who worked for many years at l'Ecrivain Restaurant as one of Dublin's best-loved sommeliers. Wines of the week Fazi Battaglia San Sisto Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Riserva Classico DOCG 2020, Marche, Italy, 12.5pc, €29.95 From 30-year-old vines in clay-loam soils, aged for 12 months in 25hl French oak barrels, this special wine showcases the versatility of Verdicchio. Luscious fruits lean to grilled peaches, rich under the barrel-aged aromas of toasted almond, subtle vanilla and savoury herbs, but with a gorgeous acidity with a bright, mineral, juicy finish. A complex and well-balanced gastronomic wine. Little Italy, Smithfield; Fazi Battaglia Titulus Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico DOC 2022, Marche, Italy, 12pc, €15.95 ADVERTISEMENT Learn more An excellent introduction to a light and refreshing style of Verdicchio, with ripe fruit and floral notes of subtle peach, yellow apple and hedgerow flowers, and a bright finish of crunchy apple making it perfect lunchtime fare with fish or sheep's cheese salads. Or for summer party drinking, try its Sartarelli Spiaggia Marche IGT 2023 (€14.50) with its fresh and clean pine and bay leaf notes.
