Hoo knows how to regain form – just add more spice in game
PETALING JAYA: National mixed doubles shuttler Hoo Pang Ron wants to keep his opponents on their toes by adding variety in his game.
The 27-year-old admitted that he and doubles partner Cheng Su Yin aren't satisfied with their recent performances, and believes their gameplay tactics have been recognised by their opponents.
Pang Ron says their game have become predictable.
'I'm really not satisfied with my performance. It has dropped since last year's China Masters final. Maybe a lot of players are starting to understand our game,' said Pang Ron when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) yesterday.
'So we have been trying to improve on this with our coach. We need more variations of gameplay.'
The world No. 13 pair did well to reach the China Masters final last November before falling to home ground players Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping.
Since then, the pair have suffered early round exits and this year, they only made it to the Indonesian Masters and Orleans Masters quarter-finals, and German Open second round.
Their last three outings at the All-England, Asian Championships, and Thailand Open all ended after their first match.
There is some good news though. Pang Ron said his hamstring injury sustained during the Thailand Open has been recovering well, and there was no rush to get back on court just yet.
'I'm recovering and coming back slowly because there's no rush. There's no point aggravating it further,' said Pang Ron.
'I felt pain during the Thailand Open, and the doctors have advised me to rest. And its good as it gives me and Su Yin the chance to refresh ourselves.
'We haven't been winning for some time, and mentally we are down as well. So hopefully we can bounce back next month,' he said.
Added with Su Yin's ankle injury that forced them to withdraw from the Malaysian Masters last month, Pang Ron said it remains to be seen if they will be competing at the Japan Open from July 15-20.

We have one month to prepare for these two tournaments and we have been going through intense training. 'Our focus is on working on our weaknesses that we could see in our last few tournaments.' Wei Chong-Kai Wun's growing confidence also stems from breakthrough wins over Japan's 2021 world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi and India's 2022 Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the Malaysian Masters semi-finals and Indonesian Open second round respectively. The Malaysians previously lost twice to Hoki-Kobayashi and four times to the Indians before coming up with the formula to finally defeat their opponents. 'Finding a way to beat these pairs is good for us as we lost to them many times before this,' said Kai Wun. 'We have showed that we have the quality to beat these pairs and now it's about being consistent.' On their next targets, Kai Wun said: 'We are aiming to break into the top five in the world and win Super 750 and 1000 titles. 'We have never done these before, so we want to go all out to achieve these.'

Pearly-Thinaah's new style paying off
KUALA LUMPUR: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have transformed themselves into a lethal attacking pair after realising that defence and patience alone will not win them titles. This was evident in their last four tournaments where the world No. 3's new approach has brought considerable success as they won the Thailand Open last month and finished second in the Indonesia Open two weeks ago. They also reached the Malaysia Masters semi-finals and Singapore Open quarter-finals. "Defence alone is not enough so, we needed to be good in attacking to be an all-round pair," said Pearly during a sponsorship signing ceremony as a VitaHealth ambassador in Kuala Lumpur today. "Thinaah can now play a lot more as a baseline player and this has improved our variation. "The last four tournaments have given us a lot of confidence but more importantly, our communication on court is better and we are also varying our style of play." Pearly's performances in the Thailand and Indonesia Opens were recognised by VitaHealth as she received RM15,000 for her efforts. "I'm very happy with the support from VitaHealth since 2023 and the incentive is a big motivation for me to continue progressing in my career," added Pearly after signing a new two-year contract as its ambassador.

All Bing Kun wants is a lasting partnership with latest partner Pei Kee

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Loo Bing Kun hopes to form a stable partnership with Go Pei Kee in the mixed doubles after switching partners many times. Bing Kun, who had a brief stint with the experienced Toh Ee Wei last month, will combine with Pei Kee, starting from the Macau Open from July 29-Aug 3. The 23-year-old has not managed to nail down a partnership so far and hopes that he can finally establish himself with Pei Kee. The latter, who is also 23, will take on double duty as she will continue playing in the women's doubles with Teoh Mei Xing. 'The coaches informed me that I will be partnering Pei Kee and we started training together this week,' said Bing Kun after a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'I hope this will be permanent. I have changed many partners before this. I played longest for one year with Ho Lo Ee. 'To be able to perform well, I think it's better to have a steady partner. Doubles players need time to gel.' Bing Kun showed glimpses of his potential during his short time with Ee Wei, reaching the quarter-finals and second round in the Taiwan Open and Malaysian Masters respectively. The Penang-born player is hoping to use the experience gained with Ee Wei in his new partnership with Pei Kee. 'Playing with a senior player like Ee Wei was a turning point for me. I learned a lot from her,' said Bing Kun. 'The style of play with Pei Kee will be different and I need to help her get her rhythm back in the mixed doubles as she has been focusing solely on women's doubles for the past six months. 'She has also been playing more in the back court in women's doubles, so I need to help her adapt to playing at front.
