U.S. Air Force Fighters Deploy To Reinforce Middle East
As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues, the U.S. Air Force is now in the process of deploying fighters to bases within the Middle East. The fighter movements follow the arrival in Europe of more than two-dozen U.S. Air Force KC-135R and KC-46A tankers that flew across from the United States in recent days, as you can read about here. Three unnamed U.S. officials confirmed to Reuters that the United States was deploying more fighters to the Middle East and extending the deployment of other warplanes already in the region. One of the officials said the deployments include F-16, F-22, and F-35 aircraft. The U.S. military is deploying more fighter aircraft to the Middle East and extending the deployment of other warplanes. Story coming. w/@idreesali114 U.S. officials stress the defensive nature of the deployment. — Phil Stewart (@phildstewart) June 17, 2025 In the latest move, the U.S. military is moving fighter jets to the Middle East and extending the deployment of warplanes to bolster defenses amid the Israel-Iran conflict, officials say. W/@phildstewart — Idrees Ali (@idreesali114) June 17, 2025 Today, flight-tracking software revealed at least 17 U.S. Air Force tankers heading south from bases in Europe, indicating that they are 'dragging' fighters to the Middle East. This was backed up by eyewitness sightings as well as air traffic control communications. As it stands today, at least 31 tankers have been noted heading across the Atlantic, based on publicly available flight-tracking data. Now 17 tankers moving east over Europe. — Evergreen Intel (@vcdgf555) June 17, 2025 Previously, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wrote on X that he 'directed the deployment of additional capabilities to the United States Central Command Area of Responsibility.' 'Protecting U.S. forces is our top priority, and these deployments are intended to enhance our defensive posture in the region,' Hegseth added. — Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth (@SecDef) June 16, 2025 Since Hegseth's comments yesterday, additional tankers have been noted on flight-tracking software leaving bases in the United States. These aircraft have been flying with 'GOLD' callsigns, typically used for Coronet flights that deploy fighters across the Atlantic or Pacific. There are indications that F-22s may be coming to the Middle East from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, while F-35s are likely drawn from either the Vermont Air National Guard — as suggested by tanker tacks in the vicinity — and/or RAF Lakenheath in England. Five additional tankers lifting and heading for the east routes. — Evergreen Intel (@vcdgf555) June 17, 2025 Instagram user provided TWZ with photographs that show F-35s from Lakenheath heading south over the United Kingdom today, toward the Middle East. The stealth fighters were split into three flights of four, each supported by a KC-135 tanker, reportedly flying from RAF Mildenhall in England and Morón Air Base in Spain. As for the F-16s mentioned by one U.S. official, these may well involve the jets at Aviano Air Base in Italy. Reports of movements of some of these F-16s emerged today, based on sightings and air traffic control communications. When U.S. Air Force tankers began their migration across the Atlantic, we noted that one of the possible reasons was to prepare for the influx of additional major assets into the region, and especially fighters. At this point, this is very likely being done for contingency needs and to give the president multiple options, as we outlined in our previous feature on the tanker movements. Any involvement in the kinetic conflict remains pre-decisional, at least publicly. However, having all these assets in the region would allow the United States to respond in force if Iran attacks U.S. interests or if the administration decides to get involved directly. At the same time, the Air Force can use these fighters for shooting down drones and cruise missiles, something they have been doing in this theater for months now. In particular, the F-16s reportedly now being deployed to the Middle East have already been using APKWS IIs to down drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen since last year, which we were the first to report. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles played key roles in defending Israel from incoming missile and drone attacks last year. F-15Es recently saw their counter-drone capabilities, in particular, significantly expand through the addition of laser-guided Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) rockets to their available arsenal. Air Force F-16s in the Middle East had already been using APKWS IIs to down drones launched by Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen since last year, which we were first to report. The movement of such large numbers of tankers could also indicate support for global airpower bomber missions from the United States to Iran and back, although there has been no sign of Air Force Global Strike Command involvement so far. As of today, Planet Labs satellite imagery reviewed by TWZ revealed that four B-52s and six F-15Es, plus other aircraft, were still at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. There has been speculation that the U.S. Air Force could use B-2 stealth bombers to assist Israel in its attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. In particular, the deep-lying nuclear enrichment site at Fordow could require Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker-buster bombs, designed to penetrate just this type of target, and only carried by the B-2. This is a scenario that we have repeatedly highlighted and discussed for many years. As well as the apparent deployment of U.S. Air Force fighters to the Middle East, a second aircraft carrier strike group, led by the USS Nimitz, was sent from East Asia toward the Middle East earlier this week, as you can read about in this previous article. It will join the carrier USS Carl Vinson, which is already operating relatively close to Iran, around the Arabian Sea. Already, U.S. Navy warships in the region are understood to have been helping shoot down Iranian ballistic missiles headed toward Israel. This is in addition to the U.S. Army Patriot surface-to-air missile systems and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) ballistic missile defense systems that have been helping defend Israel, too. This is a fast-developing story, and we will bring more updates when we have information about these highly unusual aircraft movements. Contact the author: thomas@

The scale of Trump's 'Golden Dome' is a boon for defense stocks even if it isn't completed, says Bernstein
Major defense stocks can still benefit even if President Donald Trump 's "Golden Dome" project fails, according to Bernstein. The prospect of completing the missile defense system before the end of Trump's term in 2029, which the president has cited as his goal for the project, is highly unlikely, analyst Douglas Harned wrote in a note to clients last week. However, that doesn't mean the effort won't drive business for the defense industry, he said. "Even if the system fails to deliver, we expect elements to survive and for companies to profit off efforts, even when they do not succeed — and spending could go much higher," Harned said. Creating such an expansive defense system will likely require contributions and cooperation from the entire industry, Harned explained. Also, Trump has also mentioned extending contracts to some nontraditional companies, Harned said, adding that this decision may not make the project any easier. "While we see little chance that the system will be complete within three years, we expect money will be spent and benefit most major defense contractors," he said. Harned expects L3Harris Technologies , RTX, Northrop Grumman , Lockheed Martin , BAE Systems and Boeing will be among the beneficiaries. Bernstein rates Boeing and L3Harris Technologies overweight, and has a market perform rating on the rest. Harned's $273 per share price target on L3Harris implies nearly 10% upside from Wednesday's $248.83 close, while his $249 price target for Boeing suggests roughly 25% upside. Boeing shares closed at $197.68 on Wednesday, giving it a 13% year to date gain. L3Harris shares are up 19% over the same period. (Markets were closed Thursday.) Trump estimated last month that the project will cost roughly $175 billion, but Harned anticipates it will ultimately cost more than that. About $25 billion has already been included in the 2026 U.S. defense budget, according to Trump. The project's ambitions are a big challenge, according to the analyst. "In order to truly defend the entire US," he said, "it will be necessary to go back to a complex multi-layered system, that can address a wide range of attacks." "The cost of true coverage of the US will be extreme, with the problem that the system would always need to evolve as enemies evolve their capabilities," Harned said. "The situation is analogous to cybersecurity. It is much less expensive to attack than it is to defend."

LMT, RTX, or NOC: Which Defense Stock Could Deliver the Best Returns?
Geopolitical tensions have been on the rise in recent years. The Russia-Ukraine war and conflicts in the Middle East, most recently between Israel and Iran, have brought defense stocks back in focus. With a favorable demand backdrop in mind, we used TipRanks' Stock Comparison Tool to place Lockheed Martin (LMT), RTX Corporation (RTX), and Northrop Grumman (NOC) against each other to find the defense stock that could deliver the best returns, according to Wall Street analysts. Confident Investing Starts Here: Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) Lockheed Martin is one of the prominent players in the aerospace and defense space. Last year, it generated revenue of $71 billion through its Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, Rotary and Mission Systems, and Space businesses. Recently, LMT stock was under pressure following a Bloomberg report that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has halved its request to Congress for the F-35 jets for the air force to 24 this year, compared to 48 last year. Despite this potential short-term pressure, several analysts remain bullish on LMT stock due to its diversified revenue streams and robust backlog. Notably, the company stated that its Q1 2025 backlog of about $173 billion represents more than two years of sales. Moreover, Lockheed Martin continues to enter into strategic deals to bolster its business. On Tuesday, LMT stock rose about 3% in reaction to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), expanding their existing partnership on air systems to include rotorcraft manufacturing and other product categories. Is LMT Stock a Good Buy Now? Reacting to the F-35 news, Truist Securities analyst Michael Ciarmoli reiterated a Buy rating on Lockheed Martin stock with a price target of $579. The 5-star analyst noted that the F-35 accounted for about 25% of Lockheed Martin's overall sales and nearly 61% of the Aeronautics segment's revenue in 2024. He acknowledged that, given LMT's reliance on the F-35 program, the company's revenues are at risk if the F-35 budget request is halved. That said, Ciarmoli noted that 'moving pieces limit the risk until the final proposal is officially released.' He contended that securing Congressional approval to slash the F-35 program in half will be a hurdle alone, given that it has an estimated $72 billion impact on the American economy annually and supports over 290,000 jobs across all 50 states. Overall, Lockheed Martin stock scores a Moderate Buy consensus rating on TipRanks based on seven Buys and eight Holds. The average LMT stock price target of $521.07 indicates about 11.2% upside potential. Additionally, LMT stock offers a dividend yield of 2.8%. Lockheed Martin stock is down 3.6% year-to-date. RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX) RTX Corporation, previously known as Raytheon Technologies, operates via three businesses – Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon. RTX stock has rallied over 39% over the past year, thanks to strong fundamentals, demand driven by geopolitical tensions, and a rebound in aviation spending following the lull seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The defense contractor and commercial aerospace supplier has impressed investors with its resilient performance and robust Q1 2025 backlog of $217 billion, including $125 billion of commercial and $92 billion of defense business. However, there are some concerns about the impact of tariffs on RTX's near-term performance. Back in April, the company cautioned investors about a $850 million hit to its 2025 operating profit from tariffs. Is RTX Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold? Recently, Jefferies analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu raised the price target for RTX stock to $155 from $130 but maintained a Hold rating. The 5-star analyst boosted the price target to reflect the potential for margin improvement in the company's Pratt & Whitney division. Kahyaoglu also sees the possibility of RTX gaining from higher revenues from Raytheon's defense business, if the division captures incremental budget dollars from the U.S. and European Union. The analyst remains sidelined on RTX stock due to certain uncertainties, including the achievement of $10 billion in free cash flow by 2027. On TipRanks, RTX stock scores a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on 12 Buys and five Holds. The average RTX stock price target of $140.33 indicates 3.8% downside risk, following the 26% year-to-date rally in the stock. RTX stock offers a dividend yield of 1.9%. Northrop Grumman (NYSE:NOC) Aerospace and defense technology company Northrop Grumman disappointed investors with its Q1 2025 results and full-year earnings guidance cut to reflect losses on its B-21 stealth bomber program due to increased costs. However, the company maintained its sales and free cash flow outlook for 2025. Northrop had previously warned investors about higher costs related to the beginning of the B-21 program. However, the B-21 program is expected to become more profitable as production surges. Looking ahead, Northrop Grumman is confident of growth in the years ahead, driven by significant progress on its key programs. The company also highlighted its strong Q1 2025 backlog of $92.8 billion. Is NOC a Good Stock to Buy? Reacting to the disappointing Q1 2025 results, UBS analyst Gavin Parsons reduced his price target for Northrop Grumman stock to $571 from $583 and reiterated a Buy rating. Parsons thinks that a ramp to the 2025 outlook looks difficult. However, he remains bullish on NOC stock, as he believes that the company's record backlog offers a longer-term growth opportunity. With 10 Buys and five Holds, Northrop Grumman stock scores a Moderate Buy consensus rating. At $541.36, the average NOC stock price target indicates 9.4% upside potential. NOC stock's dividend yield stands at 1.9%. Northrop Grumman stock has risen 5.4% year-to-date. Conclusion Wall Street is cautiously optimistic on the three defense stocks discussed here. Including dividend yield and expected appreciation in the stock, Lockheed Martin's potential returns look slightly more attractive than Northrop Grumman, while Wall Street sees downside risk in RTX stock following a solid rally so far this year. Lockheed Martin boasts a diversified business and a strong backlog and is expected to gain from rising geopolitical tensions.
