NSE gets SEBI nod to launch monthly electricity futures

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to launch monthly electricity futures contracts. This development marks a key step toward strengthening India's power markets and advancing the structural reforms outlined in the Electricity Act, 2003.
According to a NITI Aayog report, Indias transition to net-zero emissions by 2070 will require annual investments exceeding $250 billion through 2047. By 2030, renewable energy sources like solar and wind are expected to account for over 50% of the countrys installed power capacity. A well-developed electricity derivatives market is crucial to attracting both domestic and global capital to support this transition.
The new monthly electricity futures contracts aim to provide market participants with tools to hedge against price volatility, enabling more transparent and efficient price signals in the power sector. They are expected to spur investments across the electricity value chain, from generation to retail.
Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD & CEO, NSE said, This approval is only the beginning of NSEs vision for a broader electricity derivatives ecosystem. Plans are underway to gradually introduce contracts for difference (CFDs) and other long-duration electricity derivatives such as quarterly and annual contracts subject to regulatory approvals
The introduction of these contracts will follow a calibrated, phased approach to ensure market integrity and build investor confidence. Aligning the growth of both spot and futures electricity markets is essential to creating a stable, liquid ecosystem. Financially settled futures will allow effective risk hedging, while a robust day-ahead spot market will support reliable price discovery.
NSE is committed to working closely with all market participants, regulators, and stakeholders to align efforts around enabling policies such as Market-Based Economic Dispatch (MBED) and market coupling initiatives by CERC, as well as SEBIs framework on CFDs.
Clearing and settlement of the new contracts will be handled by NSE Clearing, a Qualified Central Counterparty (QCCP) recognized by SEBI. The entity is supported by a strong net worth and a well-established settlement guarantee mechanism.

Experts' view The market decline today, Vinit Bolinjkar, Head of Research at Ventura, said, reflects heightened geopolitical tensions, following Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for US-led nuclear strikes on its facilities. "As a vital route for nearly a fifth of global oil trade, the Strait's shutdown has driven crude prices higher and shaken investor sentiment globally." "While short-term volatility is likely to persist, long-term investors should remain focused on fundamentals and selectively explore value in the current correction," said Bolinjkar. From a technical perspective, Devarsh Vakil, Head of Prime Research at HDFC Securities, said the support levels for the Nifty50 have shifted upwards to 24,800 levels. The immediate resistance, Vakil said, is now placed at 25,222 levels.

D-St jitters mount: What sparked the early sell-off in Nifty, Sensex

Indian equity market saw a selloff on Monday as sentiments soured, with tensions in West Asia esclating after the US joined the conflict by striking three nuclear sites in Iran. The BSE Sensex index plunged 931 points or 1.13 per cent in the intraday trade to hit a low of 81,476.7 during the day. The NSE Nifty50 fell 287 points, or 1.15 per cent, to 24,824.8. The indices registered their worst fall since June 13 this year. All sectors on NSE except Nifty Media were trading in the red, with Nifty IT and Auto leading the decline. Bears were in control of the market as 2,097 stocks declined on the BSE, while 1,265 counters advanced. About 179 stocks remain unchanged. The broader market, however, outperformed the frontline stocks as they only edged slightly lower. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was down 0.02 per cent, while the smallcap index was higher by 0.2 per cent, as of 11:00 AM. The risk-off sentiment reflected in Asian equities, with most benchmark indices trading lower. But the market assessment is that there are limits to what Iran can do against the US and Israel, according to VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments "That's why the early market responses - crude prices, US futures, absence of panic in Asian markets - have been muted." Even though the possibility of the closure of Hormuz Strait is a threat, it is important to understand that this has always been only a threat, and the Strait has never been closed, he said. "The market construct continues to favour a 'buy on dips' strategy." Track LIVE Stock Market Updates Here Key reasons behind the Sensex, Nifty fall today: US joins the West Asia turmoil: Over the weekend, the US struck three nuclear sites in Iran with bunker-busting bombs, ending speculation of its involvement in the ongoing conflict in the region. US President Donald Trump declared the three facilities 'totally obliterated,' and warned of greater attacks unless Iran makes peace with Israel. Following the strikes, Iran vowed to retaliate, warning the US of "dire consequences" and has reportedly approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Asked about the Strait, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi said that 'a variety of options" are available to Iran, adding that the country would defend itself by all means necessary. Crude oil prices jump, Rupee weakens: Oil prices rose as much as 6 per cent before paring gains as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens the global oil supply chain. Brent crude price was up 1.19 per cent at $77.93 per barrel. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. At its narrowest, it is 33 km wide, with only 3 km allocated to each shipping direction In 2024, about 20 per cent of global petroleum liquids consumption flowed through the Strait of Hormuz, with India among the top destinations for crude oil moving through the route in Asia, according to data from the US Energy Information Administration. Therefore, any potential disruption of the oil trade and crude oil spike could hurt the current account deficit, hurting the currency. The Rupee depreciated 18 paise to open at 86.77 against the dollar. The currency has fallen 1.34 per cent so far this month. OMCs take a hit: As a result of a jump in crude oil prices, Indian oil marketing companies, especially the downstream companies, continued to trade under pressure. A jump in the oil prices will lead to higher costs for refiners, with their margins taking an impact. Shares of Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd. fell as much as 1.62 per cent and 1.69 per cent, respectively, on Monday. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. counter fell 1.8 per cent. IT stocks plunge: Information technology was among the worst-hit sectors in trade today, even after Accenture's third quarter of fiscal 2025 beat the Street's expectations. The decline in the counters came as analysts noted that demand has not changed significantly for the Indian IT pack. "We believe that the current environment is not conducive for healthy deal wins for all players," Kotak Securities said in a note.

Thus far in the June quarter, the stock price of ZEEL has appreciated by 49 per cent. The promoter group of ZEEL is raising its stake in the company to 18.39 percent, up from 4.28 percent. The company's board of dDirectors approved the enhancement of promoter shareholding by issuance of upto 169.5 million fully convertible warrants to the promoter group entities on a preferential basis, at ₹132 per warrant aggregating to ₹2,237.4 crore. The preferential issue is subject to shareholders' approval. In line with its strategic ambitions for the future, ZEEL is taking necessary steps to identify and invest in new avenues for growth and capitalize on the emerging opportunities. The board believes that the steps being taken by the company will enable it to remain well-poised for future investments by further strengthening its balance sheet with access to significant growth capital. Additionally, the infusion of funds from the promoters will enable the company to further fortify its core business segments and strengthen its financial foundation to explore value-accretive growth opportunities in the evolving Media & Entertainment landscape. Meanwhile, according to media reports, the promoters of ZEEL, Subhash Chandra and his family, are expected to recover through the Essel group around ₹1,300 crore in one year from various parties who owe money to them. ZEEL in investor presentation, released on Sunday, June 23, highlighted that the 'Z' to create a significant cash reserve in order to compete effectively with the competitor and to act proactively to address any rapid market shift. The company has to enhance its digital offerings in a profitable manner both domestically and internationally without going beyond content ecosystem. For growth initiatives the company said it is developing new business verticals to expand its target audience and augment revenue streams. Micro dramas, UGC, Live Events, Edutainment, Emerging Sports, etc. the company is developing new distribution business model to capture and retain a larger pool of eyeballs. The capital deployed in the growth initiatives will be aimed at enhancing the profitability of the company in next 3 years and surpass the highest EPS delivered by the company on enhanced capital base, the company said. Motilal Oswal Financial Services view on ZEEL ZEEL aims to deliver revenue CAGR of 8-10 per cent with its current portfolio and improve EBITDA margins to an industry-leading range of 18-20 per cent by FY26. The brokerage firm believes that a sustainable recovery in ad revenue remains key to achieving these aspirations and driving a potential re-rating of multiples. 'Our earnings estimates are unchanged as we await more clarity on the use of promoter fund infusion (~₹ 2,200 crore) and FCCBs (~₹ 2,000 crore). However, the fund infusion will provide ZEEL with enough firepower to improve its competitive position in the industry,' Motilal Oswal Financial Services said. As noted earlier, Zee's valuations have turned attractive. However, a sustained recovery in domestic advertisement revenue and a favorable outcome in ongoing litigation for ICC rights with Star remain key for rerating, the brokerage firm said.
