The Cambridge International Examination (CIE) and the British Council have cancelled Cambridge O Level, IGCSE and International AS & A Level exams scheduled for today (Friday) in Muzaffarabad and Mirpur cities of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad and Punjab province.
In a statement issued on Thursday it said the difficult decision was taken in consultation with authorities after reviewing the current security situation. "Our priority is to support the safety of students and staff, and help students progress with their education," it said.
It said that exams scheduled to take place elsewhere in Pakistan on Friday, May 9 will go ahead as planned if the security situation remains unchanged. "We will keep everyone updated if there are any changes."
"Where exams are cancelled, we use our expertise and well-established processes to make sure we can award fair grades so that students can progress," the statement added.
It urged the concerned individuals to keep following and checking the Cambridge and British Council Pakistan official pages only for any official updates. "If you have any questions, please contact your school, or British Council Customer Services if you are a private candidate," it added.

PM asked to save value-added sector

A man selects a dress for his child at a shop in the Saddar area of Karachi. Tailors claim they are losing business to readymade garments manufacturers. Photo: Jalal Qureshi/Express Listen to article Pakistan's $11 billion export-oriented value-added industry, which contributes nearly one-third of total exports, has issued a strong SOS appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying that recent budgetary measures are set to derail export-focused sectors at a critical time. In a joint statement, Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association, the Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association, Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and others demanded the immediate revival of the Final Tax Regime and restoration of the Export Facilitation Scheme (EFS) in its original structure. They expressed concern that despite the government's slogan of export-led growth, the reality on the ground was entirely the opposite. "The government always talks about promoting exports, but in practice, no department seems to be on board." They pointed out that in the budget speech, the finance minister uttered the word "export" only once and that too in a negative context in order to impose duty on imported yarn under the EFS. Addressing the prime minister, the joint statement said, "We urge you to intervene immediately and convene an emergency meeting with leading export associations before this budget is passed. If this situation persists, Pakistan's most reliable foreign exchange earning sector will suffer irreparable damage." In such a policy environment, they cautioned, the government's vision of taking exports to $100 billion under Uraan Pakistan was simply not possible. Industry leaders categorically said that they were not asking for subsidies, exemptions or special treatment, but just wanted a level playing field to compete globally. International buyers are actively seeking long-term clarity and stability in the EFS framework as Pakistan has a chance to attract businesses being diverted from China. The Final Tax Regime has been replaced by complex procedures, audits and refund hurdles.

FBR may detain 'tax evaders' sans warrants

Data shared with lawmakers reveals that over the past three years, the number of registered business taxpayers has increased by 5.3 million . PHOTO: EXPRESS The business community condemned the federal government's decision to allow the Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) to arrest traders and industrialists on suspicion of tax evasion. Office bearers of the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Trade and Small Industry (HCSTSI), in their reaction to the federal and provincial budgets, categorically rejected the insertion of Section 37AA into the Sales Tax Act, on Sunday. They contended that the powers authorised to the FBR are unconstitutional and undemocratic besides being inimical to trade and industry. HCSTSI President, Muhammad Saleem Memon stated "granting FBR officers the power to arrest any trader without a warrant and to detain them for up to 14 days is a gross abuse of authority and a clear violation of human and economic rights." The chamber demanded the government withdraw from this decision, warning that if the authorities remained stubborn, the business community would resort to nationwide protests. With regard to the much delayed Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway project, the chamber complained that a paltry sum of Rs15 billion was earmarked for FY 2025-26, for a project requiring around Rs400 billion. Memon argued "at this pace the project may take a decade or more to complete." The business community viewed the allocation as a reflection of the centre's disregard for vital road projects, which would benefit hundreds of millions of people travelling within Sindh, and towards Punjab.

President, PM urge efforts to end child labour

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their heartfelt greetings to the nation on the eve of Eid ul Fitr. PHOTO: EXPRESS President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday urged parents and employers to make joint efforts to eliminate child labour, as the country observed World Day Against Child Labour. Over 12.5 million children in Pakistan are involved in child labour, according to the Child Rights Movement (CRM) National Secretariat. One in four households in Pakistan employed a child for domestic work, often in hazardous conditions, as per the International Labour Organisation (ILO). According to a provincial survey, working children accounted for 11.1 per cent of K-P's child population. According to a statement from the President's House, President Zardari, in his message, called for efforts to protect children from exploitation, expressing hope for a future where children could "learn, play, and grow in a safe and dignified environment". Stressing the need for collective action by governments, the president urged employers to "strictly follow child labour laws and ensure that their workplaces are free from exploitation." He also called on parents and guardians to prioritise their children's education over "short-term gains". "I urge schools and teachers to identify children at risk of dropping out and keep them in classrooms." Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz, while reaffirming the government's commitment to ending child labour, highlighted the role of "the federal and provincial governments, the private sector, educational institutions, media, and civil society" in preventing child labour, the APP reported. "Children subjected to child labour not only face sexual and psychological abuse but they are also deprived of their fundamental right to education. They are robbed of their childhood," he said. PM Shehbaz also noted that children from "developing countries are the most affected by the scourge of child labour." "Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the global community in its fight against child labour," he added. He said that this year's theme, "Progress is clear, but there's more to do: let's speed up efforts!" highlights that while progress has been made, much more remains to be done.
