RCMP in eastern Newfoundland take over search for pilot of downed small plane
ST. JOHN'S – The RCMP have taken over the search for a pilot reported missing after his small aircraft crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Newfoundland on Tuesday morning.
A spokesman for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax says a search started after the centre received a signal from an emergency beacon around 9 a.m. Atlantic time.
Over the next two days, members of the military and the Canadian Coast Guard found an oil slick, one of the amphibious plane's floats, an empty life-raft and other debris about 225 kilometres east of St. John's.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says the single-engine Air Tractor AT-802 took off from St. John's International Airport with only the pilot aboard on Tuesday morning, heading for the Azores — a chain of islands off the west coast of Portugal.
The board has confirmed the turboprop was purchased in the United States by a man from Spain, whose flight plan included a stopover in St. John's.

Sunday afternoon, a father and daughter were swimming when they started to struggle. One swimmer, a young teenage girl according to witnesses, was able to be rescued, however her father did not resurface. 'She was in a panic, and everybody was looking for him,' says Alida Cordeiro, a mother and former lifeguard who was on the beach at the time. 'There was a lot of shock, and they couldn't contact family members that were still not at the beach or at home. It was a really, scary situation.' According to Cordeiro, the girl was looking for her phone after getting out of the water to call for help. Another witness said the father helped push her toward shore before going under. 'It breaks my heart,' Cordeiro added. 'I'm here with my kids and my husband was here, and we're probably the same age.' 'We are just assisting Bayham (fire) with the drone to try and see if we can see anything from the air and anything more than what they're seeing from the boats and from the shore,' said Murray DeCorte, district chief of Central Elgin Fire Rescue. Decorte had a busy day as he arrived in Port Burwell after an earlier rescue call. 'Down in Port Stanley, there was near drownings,' said DeCorte. 'They were taking in a lot of water, but lifeguards were doing some training and they got them to safety. (Brent Lale/CTV News London) The combination of really hot weather, and high winds was a recipe for disaster. 'The waves are really, really big,' said Cordeiro. 'When we got here today earlier this morning [the waves] were about a good solid metre and a half, and I noticed that the water was really cold. It's a bad mix for people going out there getting too cold and then getting extra tired. Where when the waves are warm, people can swim out there longer without getting as tired.' Decorte echoed that sentiment, 'With the water not being warm yet, it's hard to swim in,' he said. 'So maybe that played some of the part too in the waves.' Early in the evening, OPP brought ATVs to use on the long stretch of beach as the search continues.

Families of Air India bombing victims find peace and presence at Irish memorial

They have worked to create colourful gardens surrounding the memorial wall. Article content A larger than usual crowd is expected Monday, June 23 to mark the 40th anniversary of the bombing. Dozens of relatives have travelled from Canada. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree will be here, as will Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin and representatives of the Indian government. Adjust Text Size: A+ A- STANLY HELMUT HUBBIE (aka Stacius Helmutius Algonuis Virkutis) With great sadness, sorrow, and much love, we mourn the passing of Stanly (Helmut) Hubbie, at the age of 67. Stan came to reside at Deer Lodge Chronic care in November 2019, following his June journey of critical care at HSC. Stan suffered a cerebellar CVA stroke, respiratory failure requiring a permanent tracheostomy, PEG, and J tube feeds to aspiration risk. He was dependent on care and required a Hoyer lift and two assists for all transfers to and from his wheelchair. He was unable to vocalize and used various devices to is survived by his partner/husband of 42 years, Gordon; his siblings, Al (Bob) Virkutis, Monika Virkutis, Rosemary McKay, the Wilson family, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, neighbours, countless friends, both personal and business. Especially our dearest friend Dave Kenyon; the Kenyon family and extended embraced Deer Lodge and strived to connect and communicate to make a difference to those around him. He found creative ways to entertain and connect with residents/staff of lodge 6 and 7; with his cue cards, ever changing room decorations with flashing lights, dancing\signing robotic characters, slot machines and his collection of was recently awarded a certificate of appreciation from the RCMP in recognition of his contribution and support towards the launch of 'Communication Matters' A shared goal of inclusivity for those impacted by communication will be remembered for his humour, playful spirit, work ethic, work barbeques and the warmth he shared with friends, family, and the many people in his life he charmed with humour and kindness. He lived a life of resilience, community, and love. Always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed assistance, be it family, friend, stranger, run away pet or injured animal on the side of the road. Stan lived by the expression, 'What you put into the lives of others, comes back to you.' In accordance with his wishes, a private service has taken place.
