AIADMK alliance still shapeless and BJP trying to gain foothold through religion, says Thirumavalavan
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday contended that the AIADMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu remains 'shapeless'. In his view, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's second visit to the State (within two months), is part of an attempt to give the alliance some structure ahead of Assembly election.
Speaking to the media persons ahead of the party's rally to be held in Tiruchi on June 14, Mr. Thirumavalavan criticised the BJP's religious outreach, including events such as the Murugan devotees' conference, stating that such religion-oriented politics should not be allowed to take root in Tamil Nadu.
Mr. Thirumavalavan reaffirmed the party's commitment to the DMK-led front but insisted that coordination and seat-sharing must reflect mutual respect. 'No party should dominate or dictate terms. We have long demanded a share in governance, but this is not the moment to emphasise that,' he said.
Responding to questions on TASMAC liquor outlets, Mr. Thirumavalavan reiterated the party's consistent stand that all State-run liquor shops must be shut permanently.

International treaties can't be annulled unilaterally but we had the right to put it in abeyance, which we have done. The treaty preamble mentions that it was for peace and progress of the two countries but once that has been violated, there is nothing left to protect." The Indus Waters Treaty was suspended with immediate effect after India-Pakistan ties deteriorated sharply following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, as India took a series of diplomatic decisions such as expelling Pakistani nationals. 'We will use water that rightfully belongs to India. We will take the water that was flowing to Pakistan to Rajasthan by constructing a canal. Pakistan will be starved of water that it has been getting unjustifiably," Shah further said.

Govt to set up Centre of Excellence to mitigate man-animal conflict: Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav
NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav on Friday proposed the establishment of a Centre of Excellence dedicated to human-wildlife conflict management. The aim is to mitigate these conflicts and ensure a balance between wildlife and communities that depend on forest resources. Yadav stated, 'We should find amicable solutions through advanced technologies, including AI, for the management of human-wildlife conflict and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Wildlife Institute of India-Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History WII-SACON.' Yadav underlined the need for periodic awareness campaigns to sensitise, guide, and advise the general public on human-wildlife conflict. To address human-wildlife conflict, the ministry issued an advisory in February 2021, followed by guidelines to states and Union Territories in June 2022. The advisory recommends coordinated interdepartmental action, identification of conflict hotspots, adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, and establishment of rapid response teams. Besides, a committee at the state and district levels was formed to expedite review of the demand for compensation or relief to aggrieved parties.

‘Long way ahead for dignified life for Lankan Tamil refugees': MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi
CHENNAI: DMK's parliamentary party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi on Friday said the present DMK government in Tamil Nadu is doing its best to be inclusive by making schemes like Naan Mudhalvan and Puthumai Pen (which aim to support the education and skilling of youngsters) available to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the state. At a panel discussion organised as part of a solidarity event organised on World Refugee Day by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), she added, 'There is still a long distance to go… where asking for charity can stop and they (Sri Lankan Tamil refugees) can take their life into their own hands, and live a life of dignity.' Margriet Veenma, deputy Chief of Mission of India said governments, corporations and civil societies must unite to develop innovative solutions for refugees during times of growing needs and limited resources. Author Vijidharan said, 'Solidarity will be most powerful when everyone stands together for each other's rights… leading to a situation where there is no need for Maruvaazhvu Mugam (rehabilitation camps for Sri Lankan Tamils).' The panel featured achievers from the Sri Lankan refugee community, including Neha and Johnson, working in creative fields. Minister for Minorities Welfare SM Nasar also took part.
