SGTs must be promoted as headmasters in primary schools, not sidelined: APPTA
The leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Primary Teachers Association (APPTA) have urged the State government to promote Secondary Grade Teachers (SGTs) as headmasters in primary schools.
APPTA State President A.G.S. Ganapathi Rao and state general secretary K. Prakash Rao said: 'We oppose the government's move to transfer surplus school assistants to primary schools under the guise of 'conversion' in the ongoing promotions and transfers process. The decision is unscientific and detrimental, as it sidelines the promotional opportunities of SGTs, who are the rightful candidates for headmaster posts in primary schools.'
The association leaders said that school assistants possess subject expertise that must be utilised in high schools or upgraded primary schools.
The association leaders rued that the upcoming DSC recruitment may include appointments of headmasters for primary schools. For SGTs, who are already being sidelined, 'It is like 'rubbing salt into the wound,' they said.
The APPTA demanded that the government withdraw the proposal and after making temporary adjustments with surplus school assistants, fill all the vacant headmaster posts in model primary schools by promoting SGTs. They warned that if the government failed to address the issue, it could lead to statewide protests by SGTs.

Members of the Andhra Pradesh Primary Teachers' Association (APPTA) have strongly condemned the allotment of schools in remote areas to Minimum Time Scale (MTS) teachers who are working for very low salaries. In a statement, APPTA State president A.G.S. Ganapathi Rao and State general secretary K. Prakash Rao said many of these teachers were nearing retirement. They pointed out that after the recent promotions and transfers in the School Education Department, several schools, particularly those in remote areas of districts, have been left completely vacant. Teachers who have not yet been relieved from their previous posts are now being instructed to return and work on deputation in those vacant schools. As per the current situation across all districts, many such schools are being managed in this temporary manner until new recruits from the upcoming DSC (District Selection Committee) process join. Presently, schools that have lost all teaching staff are being marked as vacant and allotted to MTS teachers, forcing them to work in remote areas, far from their homes. APPTA leaders appealed to the School Education Commissioner to consider the situation with a humanitarian perspective and instead allot MTS teachers to vacancies closer to their local areas. Referring to the assurance given to them that new teachers will be appointed through the DSC in the first week of August, they urged the School Education Department to revise its current decision and do justice to the MTS teachers. The APPTA leaders said they had made a representation in writing to the HRD Minister Nara Lokesh and the School Education Commissioner Vijay Rama Raju on the issue.

Yoga Day preparations lead to traffic congestion in Vizag
Preparations for the upcoming International Yoga Day event are causing severe traffic disruptions across the city, particularly impacting the stretch from the Indira Gandhi Zoo Park to Maddilapalem Junction. The authorities have restricted the entry of vehicles on the Beach Road from Jodugullapalem to RK Beach, leading to severe congestion. Vehicles moved at a snail's pace between Adarsh Nagar Junction and Maddilapalem on Wednesday (June 18, 2025). Though the traffic flow eased a bit during the afternoon, it worsened again by the evening. Motorists were seen stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the stretch from Venkojipalem Junction to Hanumanthawaka Junction. Stranded vehicles included school buses, auto-rickshaws, and even ambulances. 'We expected traffic jams in view of the Yoga Day event, but not so early. The authorities could have at least used one lane of the Beach Road until June 19,' said a commuter, visibly frustrated by the congestion at Venkojipalem Junction. People attending offices and examinations were the worst affected. The DSC candidates who have an examination scheduled for June 19 received calls from the authorities, urging them to start early for the exam centre due to anticipated traffic delays. Both the traffic and civil police personnel were deployed in large numbers to manage the situation. In an attempt to ease the traffic congestion, traffic signals were disabled, and drones were used for aerial monitoring and coordination. Home Minister V. Anitha admitted to the traffic snarls and assured that the police were doing their best to manage the situation and minimise disruptions. Two-day holidays for schools Meanwhile, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad issued a release on Wednesday (June 18, 2025), announcing holidays to all schools on June 20 and 21 in view of the International Yoga Day celebrations.
