JD Vance travels to Los Angeles to scold Gavin Newsom for 'egging on' violent riots
Vice President JD Vance traveled to Los Angeles on Friday, setting up a showdown with Gov. Gavin Newsom as he visited deployed Marines in the city. The vice president traveled to a multiagency Federal Joint Operations Center and a Federal Mobile Command Center to visit with federal law officials and thank them for their efforts to protect the city. He defended the president's decision to send in federal troops to help local law enforcement combat rioters in the city. He described the series of events surrounding the riots a 'tragedy' and said that the rioters were 'egged on' by Newsom and the Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. 'That is disgraceful,' he said, adding, 'We've got to enforce our borders and get so many of these criminals out of our country to begin with.' He said that Trump acted because Newsom refused to take the riots seriously. 'If you enforce your own laws and if you protect federal law enforcement, we're not going to send in the national guard because it's unnecessary,' he said. 'But if you let violent rioters burn great American cities to the ground, then of course we're going to send in federal law enforcement to protect the people the president was elected to protect.' Vance said he was grateful to federal law enforcement officials citing the 'good news' that the rioting had slowed down, but said it was still necessary to keep them on duty in case the riots flared back up. The vice president criticized both Bass and Newsom for encouraging a 'crisis' by extending government benefits to illegal immigrants and straining the local public services. He also criticized both leaders for inciting violent riots in response to the president's deportation orders and endangering local law enforcement officials. 'I think it's disgraceful that we've ever gotten to this point,' Vance added. The vice president also ridiculed Sen. Jose Padilla for causing a scene at a press conference with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem last, leading her bodyguards to wrestle him to the ground and handcuff him. 'Well I was hoping Jose Padilla would be here to ask a question but unfortunately I guess he decided not to show up because there wasn't a theater,' he said when asked to respond to the incident. 'I think we ought to laugh them out of the building, we ought to call them out for doing what they are doing which is grandstanding.' President Donald Trump deployed 700 U.S. Marines to the city after protesters rioted in response to increased ICE raids and deportations of illegal immigrants. Vance's visit takes place after Newsom, who is considering a 2028 Ron for president, loudly protested the deployment of military forces to help quell the riots. Newsom warned that 'democracy was under assault,' because the president ignored his plea to deescalate the riots and protests. He described the deployment of federal troops and Marines unnecessary and illegal, filing a lawsuit to contest the president's deployment. Vance's trip takes place just after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled Thursday in favor of the president's authority to deploy military forces. 'The undisputed facts demonstrate that before the deployment of the National Guard, protesters 'pinned down' several federal officers and threw 'concrete chunks, bottles of liquid, and other objects' at the officers,' the court's decision read. 'Protesters also damaged federal buildings and caused the closure of at least one federal building. And a federal van was attacked by protesters who smashed in the van's windows. The federal government's interest in preventing incidents like these is significant.' The Marines were tasked with protecting federal buildings. Last week they detained a man for walking onto the property of a Los Angeles federal building but he was released without charges.

Anti-crime crusader who knocked on mayor's door with horrific props is arrested for attempted kidnapping
A Memphis man has been arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping after approaching the home of Mayor Paul Young armed with a Taser, rope, duct tape and gloves. Trenton Abston, 25, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with attempted kidnapping, stalking and aggravated criminal trespass following the incident at Mayor Young's residence. According to investigators, Abston scaled a 10-foot wall in the mayor's gated neighborhood late Sunday evening and knocked on the front door while visibly carrying a concealed object in his hoodie pocket. Young, who was inside with his wife and children, did not answer the door. 'Paul Young reported that he did not know the male and his presence at his door at a late hour wearing a hoodie and gloves put him, his wife and children in fear for their safety,' a criminal complaint filed Wednesday stated. Public and private security cameras captured clear footage of the suspect's face, which helped police 'identify, locate and arrest the suspect,' the Memphis Police Department wrote in a statement posted on Facebook. On Tuesday, police identified Abston as a person of interest. His work manager later confirmed his identity in surveillance footage from Sunday night. After his arrest, Abston consented to a search of his vehicle, where the items in question were recovered, The New York Times reported. Police said Abston also knocked on the doors of several other homes that night, raising concern throughout the neighborhood. According to the criminal complaint, Abston told investigators he intended to confront Mayor Young 'about crime in the city of Memphis.' He also said he had researched Young's address and had driven past the residence several times to confirm it. 'Abston took substantial steps toward the commission of a kidnapping,' the complaint concluded. The Memphis Police Department described the incident as 'an escalating threat to a public official' and underscored the seriousness of the charges. 'We understand the concerns raised by this incident and want to reassure the public that the Memphis Police Department remains fully committed to the safety of all residents, including our city's elected officials,' the department's statement said. 'We take any potential threat seriously and will continue to act swiftly and thoroughly.' Abston is scheduled for a bail hearing on June 23, according to the Commercial Appeal. Mayor Young, who was elected in 2023 and is serving his first term, has been outspoken about addressing violent crime in the city. In a statement, he voiced concern over the increasingly dangerous overlap between online rhetoric and real-world violence, referencing the recent assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. 'In today's climate, especially after the tragic events in Minnesota and the threats my wife and I often receive online, none of us can be too careful,' Young wrote on Facebook. 'The link between angry online rhetoric and real-life violence is becoming undeniable.' He voiced concern over the increasingly dangerous overlap between online rhetoric and real-world violence, referencing the recent assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband He also urged Memphians to reject political extremism and embrace respectful civic dialogue. Clinton donor and lobbyist's chilling threats against Minnesota capitol days after Democrat lawmakers were shot
A Minnesota lobbyist is facing felony charges after he allegedly threatened to shoot people at the Minnesota State Capitol just days after a lawmaker in the state was assassinated and another critically injured. Jonathan Michael Bohn - who has made numerous donations to Democratic causes including Hillary Clinton 's presidential campaign - was arrested on Wednesday after making the threats via text message. The 41-year-old Bohn works as the public affairs director of the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO). He made his first appearance in Carver County District Court on Friday. In court, prosecutors said he had texted someone that he was 'excited to have his gun at the capitol and blow someone's effing face off'. The criminal complaint, seen by KARE11, prosecutors claim he also said that: 'After January 6, I bought a pistol. 'Today I bought 500 bullets. I can't wait to shoot one of you mother******* in the face,' he wrote. Officials said that a search of his home uncovered a firearm and he was placed under arrest. According to the Minnesota House GOP, the text was received by a constituent of Rep. Jim Nash who then reported it to the authorities. The outlet also reported that Bohn cried throughout his first appearance as Judge Eric Braaten set his bond at $1 million and ordered him to not contact the person he had text. Bohn was also ordered to stay at least a half a mile radius away from the Capitol complex. His attorney, John Lesch, said Bohn was engaged in a political argument when he made the comments. Lesch contended that the remarks were inappropriate but didn't mean to convey an actual intent to harm anyone. He told the court that Bohn had been angered by a post that had mocked two of his friends, Rep. Melissa Hortman and Sen. John Hoffman. Hortman was murdered last week alongside her husband Mark, while the same gunman also attempted to kill Hoffman and his wife. Authorities say Trump supporter Vance Boelter, 57, is responsible for the killings, he was arrested late on Sunday night following an extensive manhunt. Boelter was charged with a total of six federal counts - two for stalking, two for murder, and two for shooting and firearms offenses. He already faces state charges, including murder and attempted murder. In a statement, Bohn said: 'I condemn violence in all its forms, and I agree with the calls from public officials and community leaders to turn down the temperature of our political discourse. 'I failed to do that here. I am profoundly sorry that my words have created a distraction during this time of collective mourning. 'This moment demands unity, compassion, and reflection — and I am committed to being part of that healing.' In a bio on the IFO site, it says: 'In the halls of the Capitol, Jonathan is regarded as a well-connected advocate who has worked on a variety of issues leading to legislative victories.' State records say he has been registered as a lobbyist with the firm since 2015, and works in the area of higher education. The IFO is a union that represents thousands of faculty at the seven state universities in Minnesota. He has been placed on leave following the allegations. IFO President Jenna Chernega said in a statement: 'We are monitoring developments closely, cooperating as needed with law enforcement and will continue to keep our members informed. 'As an organization, we remain committed to respectful, values-driven engagement with lawmakers, community partners, and one another – even in difficult moments.' Federal Election Commission data also reveal he has donated Democrat PAC ActBlue numerous times, as well as the Hillary for America campaign.
