Counter-terror and public safety plans for Edinburgh's festivals will continue to be reviewed, councillors have been assured, after a tragic event in Liverpool saw a car driven into crowds.
More than 40 people were injured, some seriously, after after a car ploughed into the crowd at Liverpool FC's Premier League title victory parade.
Temporary barriers to stop 'hostile vehicles' are to be included in plans for securing the festivals, while closing Cowgate to eastbound traffic and reopening the northern footway on North Bridge are being considered.
SNP councillor Finlay McFarlane asked officers at Thursday's meeting of the Culture and Communities Committee: 'The tragic incident in Liverpool is at the top of my mind as we approach the busy festival.
'I'm wondering if we are revisiting and making sure we have robust traffic management policies in place for our busy season which is approaching.'
Claire Miller, a public safety officer for the council, said: 'We actually reviewed a recent event in Edinburgh as a result of that as well.
'It's constantly ongoing in terms of reviewing and making sure we're following police guidance and making sure that the appropriate streets are closed, and that we have rated equipment where we need it.
'We're working with our partners to make sure appropriate equipment is placed throughout the city.'
Council officers laid out a range of proposed actions during the meeting, all aimed at keeping the city running smoothly during the festivals.
Officers will now explore opening the northern footway on North Bridge to help with the high levels of pedestrian traffic expected on the route during the summer festivals.
In addition, they will explore closing Cowgate to eastbound car traffic during the festivals to open more space for pedestrians.
This was considered for the festivals last summer, but discounted by officers.
Officers will also aim to have contingency plans for terror attacks at the summer festivals completed by the end of this month.
Permanent anti-vehicle barriers exist in parts of the Old Town, but the council has also contracted a company to provide temporary ones at other sites in the city, as well as purchasing their own temporary barriers.
The report to councillors that contained the action plan also had data about how the summer festivals went last year.
According to the report, 3.91 million people attended the festivals last year, up from 3.45 million in 2023.
It also showed that the number of entertainment noise complaints had gone down, from 39 in 2023 to 28 in 2024.
Foot traffic on Princes Street in August increased by 100,000 from 2023, reaching 1.67 million in 2024.
Some 30,000 more people used the trams in August in 2024 than in 2023, for a total of 1.18 million riders last year.
However, the number of bus users went down, dropping from 370,000 per week in 2023 to 329,000 in 2024.
Labour councillor Margaret Graham, convener of the Culture and Communities Committee, said: 'Summer festivals have a huge impact on the city financially, the economy is driven to a significant degree by it.
'So we need to manage them, and I believe that Claire manages them [well]. I have one little gripe about the South Bridge, and I have some concerns about public safety there.
'But apart from that, I am happy to move the report.'

Dutch footballer Quincy Promes 'extradited to the Netherlands to serve over SEVEN YEARS in prison' for drug trafficking and stabbing brother - but taxpayers 'have to pay for the flight!'

Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has reportedly been extradited back to the Netherlands to serve a seven-and-a-half year sentence for drug trafficking and aggravated assault. Promes has been playing his football in Dubai but was seized by the authorities after a request by the Dutch police. The former Ajax and Netherlands star, 33, was hit with a six-year jail sentence in February 2024 after being convicted of helping to smuggle cocaine into his homeland from Belgium in 2020. That followed an 18-month sentence for stabbing his cousin, but he has been absent from the Netherlands and therefore not served any time. Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that Promes begins his sentence in a detention centre after being flown back in a chartered plane. His plane cost almost £86,000 to the taxpayer after it was demeed there were 'safety risks' in putting him on a public flight. Premier League giants such as Liverpool and Arsenal were linked years ago with a move for Promes, who has won trophies in the Netherlands and Russia and earned 50 caps for his country. The earliest Promes will be released is in 2030 if his sentences are upheld wth parole, reports De Telegraaf. The Amsterdam court ruled last year that Promes had been directly involved in smuggling 1,360 kilograms of cocaine to the Netherlands or Belgium in two shipments in 2020. Promes denied the charges but the court found there was enough evidence from two eyewitnesses and intercepted phone conversations to hand down a prison term. Meanwhile, in the incident with his brother, the stabbing to the leg occurred at a family party at a warehouse in Abcoude after Promes got into an argument over a stolen necklace. He was playing in the Netherlands for Ajax at the time but moved to Spartak in February 2021. The judge criticised Promes, who is currently in Russia, for not coming to the court to defend himself or expressing any remorse. His sentence would have been six months less had he done so. The Amsterdam-born forward played 50 times for the Dutch national team, scoring seven goals. Starting his career at Twente, he had a four-year stint with Spartak between 2014 and 2018 before signing for Spanish club Sevilla. From there, he spent a season-and-a-half with Ajax before returning to Spartak. He has scored 37 goals in 74 games for the club during his second spell. He joined second-tier Dubai United for last season and scored 19 goals in 20 appearances.

Cole Palmer makes surprise admission as he explains shirt number change

Chelsea star Cole Palmer made a surprise revelation while explaining his decision to switch to the No.10 shirt. Following their opening win against Los Angeles FC, Chelsea continue their Club World Cup campaign on Friday night against Flamengo. The Premier League club take on the Brazilian giants, whose side includes former Chelsea and Arsenal star Jorginho, in Philadelphia at 7pm UK time. Ahead of the tournament, it was announced that Palmer would be switching his shirt number from 20 to 10, befitting of his status as arguably the team's best player. The No.10 shirt had been worn by Mykhailo Mudryk since January 2023, with the Ukraine international not given a replacement number amid his suspension for failing a doping test last year. Since the announcement, Mudryk has been charged by the Football Association and could be banned from football for up to four years, with Enzo Maresca seemingly in the dark about his future at Stamford Bridge. The 24-year-old, nicknamed 'Misha' by his teammates, has denied knowingly taking any banned substances, explaining in a statement last November he was in 'complete shock' having 'not done anything wrong'. It is usually customary for players to seek permission from each other if they wish to take their squad number, but Palmer has revealed that he has not been in contact with his exiled teammate. 'I have not spoken to Misha yet, but I will when the time is right,' the England international told reporters ahead of the Flamengo clash. 'It is not really my place to get involved with him at the minute. I will speak to him. On Wednesday, June 18, a Football Associaton spokesman said: 'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA's Anti-Doping Regulations. 'As this is an ongoing case, we are not in a position to comment further at this time.' 'I wore No.10 all my life growing up and I just like the number. More Trending 'Lionel Messi the big one, Wayne Rooney and players like that – it's an iconic number.' Palmer will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of successful Chelsea No.10s like Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Joe Cole. Maresca also confirmed that he had no say in the matter, adding: 'Was I involved in this decision? No, no, I don't care about the numbers. 'It's a player matter. Is Cole good enough to wear the No10? Yes.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Man City fined £1m by Premier League for repeated rule-breaking

Manchester City have been fined more than £1m by the Premier League for breaching the rules around delayed kick-offs and restarts nine times last season, England's top-flight league said on Thursday. The fine comes a year after City paid £2m to the league for breaching the same game-delay rules. The club accepted and apologised for the rule breaches, and confirmed they have reminded their players and staff of their responsibilities in complying with the rules. "Rules relating to kick-offs and re-starts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs," the league said in a statement. "It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule." Fines totalling £1m pounds were imposed relating to City's home games against Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, West Ham United and Newcastle United and their away fixtures against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town. The longest game delays were two minutes 22 seconds each for restarts v West Ham and Ipswich. City are awaiting the verdict of 115 unrelated charges of alleged breaches of the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. The charges cover a period starting from 2009 and continuing into the 2022-23 season. City have always denied any wrongdoing.
