Delap would be 'good business' for Newcastle

BBC News25-04-2025

Former Newcastle defender Steve Howey says Liam Delap should be on the radar of the Magpies this summer given his relatively low transfer fee.The Ipswich striker has a reported buy-out clause fee of £30m and has already been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United, but Howey believes Newcastle would be a good fit for the 22-year-old."He's got potential," said Howey to BBC Radio Newcastle. "He is big, he's strong, he's quick and he's aggressive."He is a bit of a throwback centre forward because he's very direct in what he wants to do and he can finish."He's a proven goal scorer because he's not been given many chances at Ipswich but he's still scored a fair amount of goals for them in his first season in the Premier League. Yes, he was at Manchester City where he made a few appearances but this was his first consistent season."If you look at the market now, I think for £30m it's quite good business and it would be a good club for him to sign for because Newcastle will need options when they are also competing in Europe."Listen to the full conversation on BBC Sounds

Chelsea star gives damning response to Jackson red card - "He needs to improve"

Chelsea were beaten in their Club World Cup clash against Flamengo as they ended with ten men after Nicolas Jackson received a second red card in as many months Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson has been told he needs to "improve a little bit with these kinds of things" by team-mate Marc Cucurella after being shown a red card within four minutes of his introduction as the Blues were beaten by Flamengo in the Club World Cup. The Chelsea frontman came off the bench in Philadelphia but only last four minutes before he was given his marching orders. The Senegalese star recklessly planted his studs on Ayrton Lucas' shin just after his side had gone down 2-1, making their task even harder. It is the second time in a matter of weeks that Jackson was red carded. He was sent-off at Newcastle back in May as the west Londoners fell to a 2-0 loss and his moment of madness against cost his team again, as they eventually lost 3-1 to their Brazilian opponents. Jackson's antics have drawn criticism from all quarters and Cucurella has admitted that the 24-year-old needs to address the issue in his game. The Spaniard said: "It is a bit of bad luck. He tried to put his foot in to kick the ball but he kicked the player's leg. That's it. We now miss him for the next game. He is a young player with a lot of quality and maybe he needs to improve this." Cucurella confirmed that Jackson, who was described as a "very important player for us", stood up and apologised to the group in the aftermath of the loss with the forward taking to social media and issuing a statement where he said there were "no excuses". "I want to say sorry. To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down," it read. "Another red card… And honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a moment in football that went the wrong way." Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca refused to dwell too much on the situation as he said: "It was a red card, so nothing to say." Jackson's moment of madness does open the door for new signing Liam Delap to further stake his claim. Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel blasted Jackson for his red-card challenge as he said on DAZN: "Unbelievable. Stupid, stupid, stupid mistake. I don't know what's going through his head. You come into the game, you're 2-1 down, your team needs you, and you do that. "He did it in the important Premier League game against Newcastle, when we needed to win to qualify for the Champions League places, and he has done it again. You can't keep making mistakes." Nicolas Jackson says he is ‘so angry at myself' after red card in Flamengo loss

The Senegal striker was shown a straight red card – just four minutes after coming off the bench – for an aggressive studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas in Friday's 3-1 defeat in Philadelphia. It came amid a calamitous six-minute spell in the second period in which the Blues also conceded two goals to surrender their half-time lead. It was also Jackson's second dismissal in just four appearances having also been given his marching orders for a forearm crack on Newcastle's Sven Botman in a Premier League match last month. 'I want to say sorry,' Jackson wrote on Instagram on what was a 24th birthday to forget. 'To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. 'Another red card… And honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. 'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a moment in football that went the wrong way. 'No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. 'Sorry. Sorry, Sorry.' 🔴⚫️ A comeback win for @Flamengo!#FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 21, 2025 Jackson's moment of madness, in which he forcefully caught Lucas on the shin, effectively ended Chelsea's hopes of getting back into the Group D contest at Lincoln Financial Field. Enzo Maresca's side were already reeling after Pedro Neto's well-taken 14th-minute opener was cancelled out by Bruno Henrique after 62 minutes and quickly followed by another goal for veteran Danilo. Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring seven minutes from time, putting Flamengo in charge of the group and potentially making Chelsea's route through the tournament complicated. Defender Marc Cucurella suggested discipline was an area Jackson needed to work on. The defender told DAZN: 'He is young player, he has a lot of quality, he maybe needs to improve this a little bit. We are here to improve, we are not perfect so it is part of the game.' Maresca did not deny the sending-off was damaging, though he tempered criticism by claiming it was not a clear-cut decision. Maresca said: 'Those six minutes completely changed the dynamic of the game. 'I'm not 100 per cent sure that it's a red card compared to the Newcastle one, but it can be and the referee decided it. 'It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in these things. He knows very well that both situations were not something good for the team.' Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, now the manager of Flamengo, backed Jackson to bounce back. 'It was a little mistake,' he said. 'It was a clear red for me but it is a small detail for a player who can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.' Chelsea, who now have three points from their opening two games, face ES Tunis in their final group game on Tuesday night (2am Wednesday BST).
