Baseball: Asamura records 2,000th career hit in Rakuten's win

Hideto Asamura collected his 2,000th career hit in the Rakuten Eagles' 2-1 win over the Nippon Ham Fighters on Saturday, making him the 56th player in Japanese baseball to reach that plateau.
His 2,000th came in a two-run first inning when the 34-year-old first baseman drove in the opening run of the game with a single to right at Rakuten Mobile Park Miyagi.
Asamura added a base hit in the second inning and finished the game 2-for-4.
"When I began my professional career, I never thought I'd reach 2,000 hits," said Asamura, who joined the Eagles in 2019 as a free agent from the Seibu Lions.
"I'll continue to take it one hit at a time and do my best to win the championship."
Kosei Shoji (1-0) tossed six innings of one-run ball. Sachiya Yamasaki (2-2) took the loss.
In other action, Shinya Hasegawa hit two of Seibu's four home runs to back an eight-inning gem by Tatsuya Imai (5-1) as the Lions beat the Lotte Marines 6-1.

San Diego skipper Mike Shildt was also suspended for a game, while Suarez received a three-game ban, which he is appealing. In other MLB action, Baltimore Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano was pulled after 3-2/3 innings of his team's 5-3 comeback win against the New York Yankees. The Japanese right-hander gave up three runs on seven hits, including an Aaron Judge solo home run in the third, while walking three and striking out four. The Orioles turned the game around with two runs in the eighth. Los Angeles Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi did not factor in his team's 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Houston Astros after throwing seven innings of two-run ball in which he scattered six hits and had nine strikeouts. It's a common act of playful childhood roughhousing along the lines of noogies and could be used as punishment for losing a game like rock, paper, scissors. The euphoria at the time surrounding Ohtani's new home, recent marriage, and adorable dog spread like wildfire in Japan. The craze got so big that even Hac Co., Ltd. in Osaka, the maker of Dekopin Buster, or 'Decopin Buster' as they stylize it, benefitted without having anything at all to do with Ohtani or his dog. ▼ Right now, I can hear you thinking, 'You don't mean the same Hac that makes the remote control turds, do you?'
