Basketball Team LA Lakers To Be Sold For Rs 86,000 Crore

NDTV2 days ago

The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold in a record-breaking $10 billion deal that makes the iconic franchise the highest-valued sports team in US history, ESPN reported Wednesday. The report said the Lakers owners, the Buss family, would sell their controlling interest in the team to billionaire Mark Walter, who already owns a minority stake in the franchise. While Jeanie Buss would continue as Lakers governor, the deal ends the Buss family's 46-year reign over the NBA giants. Walter is the chief executive of holding company TWG Global which has built an impressive portfolio of professional sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Sparks.
He is also part of the ownership group of English Premier League side Chelsea. TWG also owns the Billie Jean King Cup tennis tournament and the Cadillac Formula One team.
While further specifics of the deal were not disclosed, Lakers legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson -- a business partner of Walter -- was among the first to react to news of the agreement. "Laker fans should be ecstatic," Johnson wrote on X.
"A few things I can tell you about Mark -- he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way. And he will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike."
'The best choice'
Johnson cited Walter's ownership of the Dodgers baseball team as a reason for optimism. The Dodgers have won the World Series twice since Walter's ownership group took over the club, and in recent years have adopted an aggressive recruitment strategy that has seen them sign some of the sport's best talent, including Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani on a 10-year, $700 million deal.
"Mark is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand," Johnson wrote. "The proof is in the pudding on what he's been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers.
Mark has been nothing short of a winner." The Buss family selling the Lakers marks the end of an era in the NBA, whose modern popularity owes much to the franchise's 1980s heyday. The Lakers were bought in 1979 by charismatic tycoon Jerry Buss, who quickly helped turn the franchise into a sporting powerhouse as well as a globally recognised brand.
The Buss era brought the Lakers 11 NBA championships -- more than any other team over the same period -- and encompassed golden ages which included the "Showtime" Lakers of Magic Johnson as well as a hat-trick of championships between 2000 and 2002 when the team was spearheaded by Kobe Bryant.
More recently the team recruited superstar LeBron James, who led the Lakers to a 17th championship in 2020, and stunned the league earlier this after swooping for Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic.
Walter has been a minority owner of the Lakers since 2021 when he bought a share in a deal which also gave him first refusal to purchase the club should the Buss family ever decide to sell.
The sale of the club smashes the previous highest figure paid for a US sports team, the $6.1 billion paid for the Boston Celtics earlier this year. That Celtics sale eclipsed the $6.05 billion that Josh Harris paid for the Washington Commanders in 2023.

Haliburton warns Pacers of 'poison' of outside noise before NBA Finals game 7

Indiana star Tyrese Haliburton says the Pacers must keep their focus firmly on the Oklahoma City Thunder and block out the "poison" of narratives popping up around game seven of the NBA Finals. HT Image The Pacers pushed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder to a winner-take-all game seven with a stunning blowout victory on Thursday, Haliburton inspiring his teammates with a 14-point performance two days after he limped through game five with a right calf strain. Now the Pacers have a chance to claim the first NBA championship for a franchise that won three American Basketball Association titles before joining the NBA as part of the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. "The narratives are going to be almost poison," Haliburton said. "To talk about what this would mean to our city and our organization and legacy talk, and how we played so well and now the pressure is on ... there's going to be narratives that we can't really pay attention to. "We've got to control what we can. So much of these games has come down to who is going to start the fight from a physicality standpoint, take care of the ball better, rebound the ball better. "Those are the important things that we need to focus on ... we've got to be ready to compete in game seven." Sunday's title showdown in Oklahoma City will be the 20th game seven in Finals history, and the first since 2016 when the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors on their home floor to complete their comeback from a 3-1 series deficit and claim the title. The LeBron James-led Cavs were the first road team to win a Finals game seven since 1978. Home teams are 15-4 in championship game sevens and Haliburton knows the Pacers face a monumental task in trying to polish off the 68-win Thunder on their home court. "There's no such thing as, like, a pretty game seven. They're usually ugly bloodbaths," Haliburton said. "We've got to go in and just figure it out. These guys are going to play hard. They make shots at a higher clip at home. Their crowd is amazing. "This is why we do what we do," he added. "This is the peak, the pinnacle of our sport." bb/js This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Dixon third company to come up in electronics hub

Noida: Dixon Technologies has secured 22.5 acres in YEIDA's electronics manufacturing cluster (EMC) in Sector 10 near the upcoming Noida International Airport, becoming the third company to join the hub. Officials said on Friday that Dixon has received a letter of intent (LoI) for setting up its manufacturing unit for mobile phones, consumer electronics, telecom equipment, lighting products, and white goods. YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh informed Dixon Technologies that their proposal was approved in-principle. However, the final allotment was subject to clearance from the Invest UP Empowered Committee and adherence to state policy guidelines and regulatory norms. Recently, approvals were issued to two other firms — Ascent-K Circuit and Aurionpro ToshiAutomatic Systems — for units under the central govt's EMC 2.0 scheme. The land allotment in the 206 acre cluster gained strong traction from top industrial players, officials said. YEIDA officials said the land acquisition process was ongoing, and provisional LoIs were issued in line with policy clearances. "With Dixon joining the cluster, officials expect the EMC in Sector 10 to emerge as a key electronics manufacturing hub in north India, catalysing further investment and job creation in the region," the CEO added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Utendorf: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo The EMC 2.0 in Sector 10 received in-principle approval from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) during the 7th Project Review Committee meeting held on April 11. Dixon Technologies operates 12 plants in Noida and one in Greater Noida, managed by its subsidiaries and joint ventures. The company operates dedicated manufacturing units for phones for Xiaomi, Motorola and Nokia, besides earphones and headphones under Boat Lifestyle. In 2023, Dixon Technologies signed an MoU with the UP govt during the UP Global Investors Summit, with Sunil Vachani, chairman of Dixon Technologies, announcing plans for additional units for manufacturing and designing electronic products in Noida. Dixon's Greater Noida plant, sprawling over 20 acres in Ecotech 8, manufactures refrigerators. Collaborating with a Japanese company Rexxame, Dixon operates another Noida plant focusing on manufacturing PCBs for air conditioners.
