SPIEF Emphasises Importance of Media Co-op in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals
Nada Mustafa
2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact, the world's largest corporate initiative aimed at engaging businesses in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to TV BRICS.
A session of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum (SPIEF) was dedicated to this event. Participants in the discussion agreed that awareness of the 2030 Agenda needs to be raised, with an emphasis on cooperation between the media in the BRICS+ countries and the creation of a multipolar media space for sustainable development. The discussion was moderated by Ivan Polyakov, Chairman of TV BRICS.
The international media network's team spoke with session participants at the TV BRICS studio in the Roscongress International Cooperation Area at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025. They discussed the significance of the UN Global Compact and how media cooperation contributes to raising awareness of the SDGs.
Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, noted that without the participation of business, the Sustainable Development Goals are unattainable, and this is precisely the significance of the compact. She recalled that companies from 160 countries that share the principles of responsibility, respect for human rights, and environmental protection have joined the compact.
"The SDGs are focused on the 2030 horizon. But sustainable development, as a model of economic and social development for humanity, will not end by that time. On the contrary, our task is to make every effort now not only to achieve the goals set, but also to rethink our mentality, economic and social policies during this period so that beyond the 2030 horizon, humanity will continue on the path of sustainable development," Valovaya said.

UN experts slams Israel for bombing civilian sites in Iran, call on to avoid harm to prisoners
United Nations investigators warned Monday of the "extensive suffering" Israeli attacks are causing in Iran, voicing particular concern at the risk facing detainees held near sites being bombed. They called on Israel to avoid hitting non-military targets and on Iran to move prisoners to safety. On the 11th day of the escalating war between Israel and Iran, the UN's Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, along with the UN's special rapporteur on the rights situation in the country, called on all sides to "respect international law and protect civilians". In a joint statement, they decried what appeared to be Israel's strikes on non-military targets. "Some attacks -- including the targeting of the headquarters of Iran's state broadcasting agency ... and the targeted killing of scientists - appear to have been carried out in violation of the principle of distinction under international humanitarian law," they said. The independent experts, who are mandated by the UN Human Rights Council but who do not speak on behalf of the United Nations, in particular voiced concern about the situation of detainees in Iran "held in prisons near sites of bombings". They urged "Iranian authorities to relocate prisoners away from locations at risk from the airstrikes". The call came after Israel earlier Monday hit Tehran's notorious Evin jail, known to hold political prisoners, including a number of foreigners. Since it began launching large-scale attacks on Iran on June 13, Israeli strikes have killed more than 400 people in the country, Iran's health ministry has said. Iran's retaliation on Israel have killed 24 people, according to official figures. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

As UN marks 80th anniversary, El-Sisi calls for bold reform to meet global challenges - Foreign Affairs
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has called for comprehensive reform of the United Nations (UN) to help it keep pace with rapid global transformations, reaffirming Egypt's long-standing support for international cooperation and multilateralism. In a recorded speech on Monday marking the UN's 80th anniversary, El-Sisi stressed that reform efforts must uphold international law and avoid double standards. 'Our celebration today comes at a pivotal moment when global balances are being reshaped, and unprecedented challenges are being imposed on the international community,' he said. The president also announced the opening of new UN regional and country office headquarters in Egypt's New Administrative Capital, describing it as a point of national pride and a reaffirmation of Egypt's commitment to multilateral engagement. El-Sisi highlighted Egypt's historic role as a founding member of the UN, underscoring its contributions to peacekeeping, international security, and the defence of the UN Charter. He praised Secretary-General António Guterres's efforts to advance institutional reform and emphasized the UN's role in promoting sustainable development, protecting human rights, and addressing shared global challenges such as climate change and water scarcity. Egypt's call for broader UN reform was echoed by its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Osama Abdel-Khalek, who reiterated the country's demand for a fundamental overhaul of the Security Council's veto system. He described the current structure as a core defect that must be addressed once and for all. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

El-Sisi Reaffirms Egypt's Global Role at UN's 80th Anniv. Commemoration
Ahmed Emam Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's longstanding commitment to international peace and multilateralism during his participation in the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, held in Moscow. Speaking via videoconference, El-Sisi praised the UN's legacy since its founding in 1945, and underscored Egypt's central role in supporting its mission over the decades. He described the occasion as a timely reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold international peace, security, and sustainable development. 'Eliminating the root causes of conflict must remain a top priority,' El-Sisi said, calling for strengthened efforts in preventive diplomacy and inclusive development. 'Peacekeeping cannot be a substitute for comprehensive political solutions.' The president highlighted Egypt's status as a founding member of the United Nations and one of its leading contributors to peacekeeping missions. Since 1960, Egypt has deployed more than 30,000 peacekeepers to 37 UN missions across 24 countries—one of the highest among member states. El-Sisi also announced Egypt's readiness to support the UN's institutional reform efforts under the UN80 initiative, offering to host regional offices or agencies seeking relocation. He pointed to Egypt's strategic geographic location, robust infrastructure, and favorable time zone as key advantages for enhancing UN operational efficiency. The commemoration coincided with Russia's Victory Day and was attended by several international leaders. El-Sisi's participation follows his recent visit to Moscow, where he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, highlighting Egypt's active diplomatic engagement on both bilateral and multilateral fronts. The Egyptian leader concluded his remarks by stressing the importance of revitalizing multilateral institutions to meet the evolving challenges of the 21st century. 'Our shared future depends on the principles of cooperation, solidarity, and collective action,' he said. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean
