Teen star of Hong Kong film on DSE exams convicted of theft again
A Hong Kong student who starred in a popular web documentary about secondary school public exams has been convicted of theft for a second time after pleading guilty to shoplifting at a supermarket early this year.
Eastern Court on Thursday recorded a guilty plea from Tang Ngai-hong, who admitted to stealing a bag of fruit and two packets of potato chips from Fresh supermarket at Kornhill Plaza North in Quarry Bay on January 5.
The offence took place just five months after the 19-year-old was fined HK$3,000 (US$380) for stealing nearly HK$700 worth of food items from the Kowloon Bay branch of Japanese discount chain store Don Don Donki on May 8, 2024.
Acting Principal Magistrate David Cheung Chi-wai said a financial penalty was no longer appropriate given that Tang reoffended in a relatively short period of time.
But the magistrate also noted the defendant's young age, timely plea and the relatively low value of the stolen goods.
He adjourned sentencing until June 26, pending assessments on the defendant's suitability for either probation or community service.

Hong Kong police arrest 118 for e-commerce scams involving HK$5 million in losses
Hong Kong police have arrested 118 people in a citywide crackdown on online shopping scams involving losses of more than HK$5 million (US$636,940), largely linked to concert ticket sales amid a boom in the city's live music performances. One of the cases included a victim selling a clothes iron who was swindled out of HK$1 million. Those arrested included 82 men and 36 women, aged between 18 and 74, who were linked to 120 online shopping scam cases, according to the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau's Superintendent Ko Tik. The cases involved 321 victims, with total reported losses exceeding HK$5.2 million. Last year, police received 44,480 fraud reports involving HK$9.15 billion in losses, with online shopping scams accounting for about 42 per cent of cases. 'This rising trend continues into 2025, with 3,076 online shopping scam cases recorded in the first quarter, a 30 per cent increase compared with the same period last year,' he said. From January to May this year, police had requested that social media platforms remove more than 33,900 suspected scammer accounts and pages.

Hong Kong still faces ‘severe' security threats but must seize the day: Xia Baolong
Hong Kong still faces 'complex and severe' external and internal national security threats that it should be vigilant about, while leveraging its unique strengths to boost connectivity with the world and integrate with the country, a senior Beijing official has said. Setting out a review of the city's recent chaotic past, Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, on Saturday laid down directions for Hong Kong which he said had entered a new 'chapter' of development after the implementation of the national security law five years ago. The local government should improve its governance, react to trends in a timely manner and solve deep-seated conflicts in society, while the city should also remain vigilant over persistent national security threats, he stressed. 'One should not assume that all is well in Hong Kong. We should never forget about the pain when the wounds are healed,' Xia said, warning that there were still people who were determined to smear the legislation or threaten authorities with new forms of 'soft resistance'. 'The situation facing Hong Kong in maintaining national security remains complex and severe,' Xia added. '[The city] should maintain and consolidate its hard-earned stability through firmly grasping the practical requirements of maintaining national security under the 'one country, two systems' principle.'
