ALTÉRRA backs Absolute Energy to develop renewable capacity in Italy
ALTÉRRA, the UAE's $30 billion climate investment vehicle, today announced a €50 million commitment via ALTÉRRA Acceleration Fund to Absolute Energy, an innovative Italian renewable energy platform.
The co-investment, made alongside global infrastructure investment manager, I Squared Capital, will help accelerate the development of an initial active pipeline of 1.4GW projects across Italy.
Absolute Energy focuses on the rapid development of multiple commercially viable small to medium-scale solar projects across Italy, leveraging the country's supportive regulatory environment - including accelerated permitting processes and guaranteed grid access. Through this initial buildout of 1.4GW of solar and battery storage capacity, along with a broader development pipeline of over 6GW, Absolute Energy is well positioned to become a next-generation Independent Power Producer (IPP) playing a key role in advancing Italy's decarbonization and energy independence goals.
ALTÉRRA estimates that this 1.4GW pipeline could eliminate up to 380,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions annually.
Italy has set a national target of adding 46GW of new solar capacity by 2030 to advance its net zero ambitions, address rising power demand, strengthen energy security, and reduce dependence on energy imports. Benefiting from favourable conditions such as high solar irradiation levels coupled with supportive policies, Italy represents a compelling market opportunity for advancing solar infrastructure at a pivotal moment in Europe's energy transition.
Majid Al Suwaidi, CEO of ALTÉRRA, commented: 'We are excited to support Absolute Energy as it enters its next phase of growth. With a strong pipeline and deep sector expertise, the company will help drive Italy's clean energy future. ALTERRA invests to accelerate the climate transition through innovative approaches and partnerships. In working with a global leader like I Squared Capital with their strong track record in platform building and investing in renewables, this investment further demonstrates how ALTERRA works with partners to invest at scale to accelerate impact across key markets.'
Sadek Wahba, Chairman and Managing Partner of I Squared Capital, said: 'We are proud to welcome ALTÉRRA as a strategic partner in Absolute Energy. Their investment underscores the strength of the platform and the scale of the opportunity in accelerating Italy's energy transition. ALTÉRRA brings deep climate focus and ambition, and we share their commitment to deploying capital with urgency and impact. This partnership is a powerful endorsement of Absolute Energy's innovative model and I Squared's long-standing approach to building transformational infrastructure businesses in critical sectors around the world.' -

Spain's Historic Blackout Blamed On Poor Voltage Control
Spain's massive blackout was caused by overvoltage on the transmission system and the failure of the country's generators to compensate by absorbing more reactive power, according to the official government investigation. Investigators found no evidence a cyber-attack contributed to the nationwide blackout and did not directly blame the high share of renewable generation for causing a cascading failure across the network. But investigators did note there was not enough synchronised generation connected to the network to maintain voltage within acceptable limits and those generators failed to behave as expected. Efforts to connect an extra thermal generator came too late to prevent worsening instability and repeated overvoltage from causing the system to collapse. Investigators recommended stricter enforcement of existing voltage control obligations for synchronised generators as well as the deployment of synchronised compensators across the network to improve stability. The report also concluded that non-synchronous generators (including wind and solar generators) should be incentivised to contribute to voltage control in future. The instability seems to have originated within Spain itself rather than being imported from the Europe-wide transmission network that stretches from Iberia all the way to Ukraine and Turkey. Nonetheless, investigators noted Spain's relative isolation from the continent-spanning transmission system may have made the instability worse. Spain's interconnections via France account for only 3% of capacity on the country's network, well below the 15% recommended by EU regulations. More interconnections with the rest of the European grid would probably not have averted the blackout but they have been a long-sought objective, one that investigators repeated. L&T lands key Middle East grid infrastructure contracts
Indian engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced that its Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business vertical has secured new grid infrastructure orders in the Middle East as well in the Indian market. In the Middle East, the PT&D business has clinched orders for executing a set of 220kV and 132kV gas insulated substations on a turnkey basis, said L&T in a statement. These orders come from leading transmission asset owners and operators in the respective countries, it stated. In India, L&T has won an order to build 765kV and 400kV transmission line jobs pertaining to the integration of a Renewable Energy Zone in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. These new orders mark a key milestone for PT&D in its pursuit of delivering future-ready grid infrastructure to help realise the energy transition and sustainable energy goals of its valued customers, it added.-TradeArabia News Service

UAE Universities See Surge in Student Applications Amid US Visa Uncertainty
Universities across the UAE are reporting a notable increase in international student applications, as ongoing delays and uncertainties surrounding student visa processing in the United States push students to seek more accessible alternatives. With growing concerns over restrictive policies and prolonged visa wait times in the US, students and parents are increasingly turning to UAE-based institutions for stability, safety, and streamlined admission processes. Higher education institutions in cities such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Ajman have all noted a significant rise in student interest for the 2025 academic year. The shift is attributed largely to disruptions in the US student visa process and changing international education policies. University leaders say the UAE's strong infrastructure, globally accredited programs, and supportive visa environment make it an increasingly attractive destination for international learners. The ability for students to work part-time, live in some of the world's safest cities, and stay geographically closer to home has added to the country's appeal. The surge in applications is also being driven by a broader trend of students reconsidering long-standing study abroad plans, particularly those targeting American institutions. As the global education landscape continues to evolve, the UAE is positioning itself as a regional hub for world-class higher education, offering international students both academic opportunity and peace of mind.
