Night sky turning blue for Matariki

High above Port Chalmers, a historic church is turning the night sky bright blue to celebrate Matariki.
Historic Iona Church Restoration Trust committee member Bruce Clark was in the church for about five hours on Monday setting up the lights.
The trust decided to light up the church to celebrate Matariki this Friday.
"We wanted to show how the church can be used in different ways and also give back to the community a bit."
He said it took 30 LED lights to fully illuminate the church.
"When you walk around the church, it's actually glowing on the pathways around the church - some people are saying it looks eerie ... but it's just a blue glow on the windows."

Last year, the trust illuminated the clock tower and, after the great reception, decided to take it a step further and light the whole church.
Money raised by the cruise ship passengers who visited the church paid for the display, Clark said.
The church would glow blue until Sunday and he hoped it would draw some late-night visitors to Port Chalmers.
People would be able to walk around the church grounds and take photos from outside. However, visitors would not be able to enter the church because of the amount of cabling used for the display.
Any high point around the town was also a great vantage point, he said.
The church lights run on a self-timer and would be on from 5pm to midnight. The clock, however, would stay blue day and night.

Ninety-minute delay as fog forces Sydney to Hamilton flight to circle airport

‘Gift' of Olveston celebrated on Matariki

The people, mostly locals, were taking the opportunity to visit the historic Olveston house in Dunedin for the cost of an ice cream. Olveston home supervisor Alec McWhirter said offering the community the chance to visit the place for a nominal fee was in the spirit of Matariki. "It honours the wonderful gift the Theomins family gave us; and looks back as well as forward to the future. "We had at least 100 people through the home by noon; I would say there were at least 180 visitors to the home [yesterday]. "It's one of our busiest days of the year and certainly when we see the most locals. It's just really wonderful there are so many people who tell us that they've always wanted to come ... so we're really engaging with the community." Opened as a historic house museum in 1967, Olveston is a time capsule as little has changed inside the house since it was occupied as a family home from 1906 to 1966. "I think what really retains its appeal is the fact that, you know, everything here is original," Mr McWhirter said. "We live in this city with all these wonderful old buildings and all this wonderful architecture, but the insides have changed so much, whereas Olveston retains that kind of essence of the time. "People love learning those stories but also really connecting with the story of the Theomin family and learning how they contributed to their city and their time."

Mount Ruapehu ski season officially opens this long weekend

Photo: Supplied/ Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Thousands of skiers, snowboarders and sightseers will head up Mount Ruapehu this long weekend, with both skifields now officially open. This will be Whakapapa's first season under new operator Whakapapa Holdings , and chief executive Travis Donoghue said 10,000 people were expected to take advantage of good weather and early snow. "For us, June is a bonus... particularly with Matariki weekend. Folks tend to start thinking of a winter way, so really start to come out in large numbers from today onwards." Meanwhile, Tūroa Ski Area was expecting more than 2000 visitors over the long weekend. Tūroa is also now being run by a new company, Pure Tūroa , after Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, which oversaw both skifields, went into insolvency in 2022. Both Whakapapapa Holdings and Pure Tūroa have been granted 10-year Department of Conservation (DOC) concession to run their respective skifields.
