‘Namma Naadu Namma Aalvike' urges for two-language policy in Karnataka
The forum 'Namma Naadu-Namma Aalvike (NNNA)' urged the State government to implement the two-language policy in the State education system.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Kannada film lyricist Kaviraj, said, 'The aim of our campaign is to ensure that students are not burdened with a third language that holds little relevance to their immediate academic and social environment.'
He emphasised that children, already pressed for time, find it difficult to cope with an additional language. 'Children barely get five hours to study after returning home, and with three languages, they barely get even 30 minutes per subject,' he added.
Over the past seven months, NNNA has led a number of awareness campaigns, including a large-scale bike rally in Bengaluru on November 1, 2024. More than 27,000 people have signed petitions calling for the elimination of Hindi as a compulsory third language in schools.
The campaign draws inspiration from Tamil Nadu, which has long opposed the three-language policy but has still managed to maintain a high student pass rate. Kaviraj also pointed out that students' overall percentages are significantly pulled down if they perform poorly in languages, even if they excel in core subjects. 'In Karnataka alone, over 1,25,000 students have failed in Hindi, a language that many are not familiar with,' he noted.

Op Sindoor instilled fear in minds of terrorists: Defence minister Rajnath Singh
Operation Sindoor achieved all objectives and instilled fear in the minds of the terrorists, said defence minister Rajnath Singh on Monday, lauding the leadership of President Droupadi Murmu as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces. He added the President has played a crucial role in boosting the morale of the army, air force and navy from time to time. Defence minister Rajnath Singh during the release of the second volume of 'Wings to Our Hopes' and its Hindi version 'Ashaon Ki Udaan', collections of selected speeches by President Droupadi Murmu, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, in Delhi, on Monday. (PTI) The minister was speaking at Rashtrapati Bhavan during the launch of Wings to Our Hopes (Volume-II), a compilation of 51 speeches delivered by President Droupadi Murmu during her second year in office (2023–24), across occasions such as national addresses and university convocations. One of the speeches featured in the collection is the address President Murmu delivered at the passing out parade of the National Defence Academy in 2023, where she aimed to inspire and motivate newly commissioned officers of the Armed Forces, said Singh. 'Viksit Bharat (developed India) is the objective, and this book is its means,' said Singh. 'If you read this book, you will feel that she is still playing the role of a teacher in national building.' Describing the collection as a reflection of the government's vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047, Singh said the President's speeches touch on key themes like innovation, women's contributions to nation-building, equality, and cultural heritage. Citing examples like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's 'Tryst with Destiny' and Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream,' the defence minister said such speeches do more than convey ideas - they chart the course of movements and outline visions for the future. He added that speeches hold the power to ignite revolutions, influence public opinion, and drive policy change. The minister also quoted renowned writer Franz Kafka, who once said, 'A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.' He drew a parallel between this idea and President Murmu's speeches, many of which were delivered at convocations, moments he described as the 'last rites' of a student's time in the gurukul (school) of learning. In that context, he said, the President's words should be seen as part of the Rishi tradition — passing of knowledge from teacher to student. Also present at the event were minister of railway, IT and information & broadcasting (I&B) Ashwini Vaishnaw and MoS I&B L. Murugan. The book, available in Hindi as Ashaon Ki Udaan - Khand 2, along with an e-version, was compiled by Rashtrapati Bhavan and published by the Publications Division of the I&B Ministry.

Amid Israel-Iran war, this nondescript Uttar Pradesh village linked to Khomeini is back in the public eye
LUCKNOW: Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, a nondescript village in Uttar Pradesh is drawing attention for its links to the biggest figure in Iran's recent political history. Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, the fiery cleric who ignited Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution and became its first supreme leader, had his roots in Kintoor in Barabanki district, around 50 km from state capital Lucknow. Now, the village, once dominated by Shias, has a population of 13000 with just five Shia families remaining here. From Kintoor, Ayatollah Khomeini's grandfather Syed Ahmad Musavi Hindi had migrated to Iran in the 19th century. Among the five Shia families now residing in the village, the Kazmis claim a distant kinship with Musavi. A portrait of Khomeini adorns a wall in the room of Syed Nihal Kazmi who claims that his great great great grandfather Mufti Mohammad Quli Musavi and Syed Ahmad Musavi Hindi were cousins. As per the Kazmis, Syed Ahmad Musavi Hindi was born in an illustrious family of Shia scholars in Kintoor in 1790. In 1830, at the age of 40, he embarked on a pilgrimage along with the Nawab of Awadh. After visiting the revered Islamic cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq, they ultimately reached Khomein in Iran, where Musavi chose to settle permanently. The Kazmis claim that Musavi added the word Hindi with his name to reflect his Indian roots in which he used to take pride. 'He added 'Hindi' to his name to keep Hindustan alive in his identity," said Syed Adil Kazmi. In 1839, Musavi married Sakineh Ahmad, his friend's sister. She was his third wife who gave birth to Ayotollah Ruhollah Khomeini's father Syed Mostafa. Musavi died in 1869 and was buried in Karbala. However, the Kazmis also claim that the Musavis originally belonged to Nishapur in Iran and migrated to India in the early 1700s, settling in Kintoor.

AAP scores big in bypolls, Kejriwal says people have rejected BJP, Cong
New Delhi, June 23 (UNI) Buoyed by impressive bypoll victories in Punjab and Gujarat, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said the results reflected a growing public disillusionment with both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In today's vote count for the June 19 by-elections involving five seats, AAP's Gopal Italia clinched the Visavadar assembly seat in Gujarat, while Sanjeev Arora, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, emerged victorious in Ludhiana West, Punjab, defeating Congress veteran Bharat Bhushan Ashu. The BJP secured the Kadi seat in Gujarat through Rajendra Chavda, while Congress and the Trinamool Congress won one seat each in Kerala (Nilambur assembly seat) and West Bengal (Kaliganj) respectively. Celebrations broke out at the AAP headquarters in Delhi as party workers distributed sweets and raised slogans, hailing the victories as a major boost to the party's national ambitions. Reacting to the results, Kejriwal wrote in Hindi on social media platform X: 'The people of Gujarat are now fed up with the BJP and are seeing hope in the Aam Aadmi Party. In Punjab too, the people have appreciated our work and voted in even larger numbers than in 2022.' Thanking voters in both states, he added, 'Many congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the people of Gujarat and Punjab. The victory margins in both Visavadar and Ludhiana West are nearly double compared to the last election. This is a clear mandate rejecting both Congress and BJP.' Addressing a press conference in the capital post the declaration of results, the AAP National Convener said, 'AAP has won two out of five seats. Congress, BJP, and Trinamool have won one each. I congratulate Sanjeev Arora for Ludhiana West and Gopal Italia for Visavadar. We had earlier won Visavadar in 2022, but after our MLA joined the BJP, this bypoll was necessitated. We've now reclaimed the seat with a stronger mandate.' He added that the results were a sign of public approval for the performance of the AAP-led government in Punjab. Delhi AAP chief Saurabh Bharadwaj called the results 'a big political message.' 'The result is a big political message. The BJP was saying that AAP was finished, but I feel that Arvind Kejriwal has made a big comeback. It has bolstered the faith of the common people in the electoral process." UNI AJ SSP
