Inside Shearer's relationship with daughter's boyfriend after he called him out

Daily Mirror17-05-2025

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer appears to have a good relationship with both his daughters' partners, even if he publicly called one of them out for an embarrassing mistake
Rugby star Micky Young appears to be in the good books of his daughter's famous father, Alan Shearer, despite being called out by the Newcastle legend. The 36-year-old, who now plays for Gloucester Rugby after more than a decade with Newcastle Falcons over two spells, has been dating Shearer's oldest daughter, Chloe, for some time.
Young is embedded with the Shearers and features in numerous family pictures on social media. The Hartlepool-born scrum-half made the effort to travel to London to cheer on Shearer's son, Will, at the recent London Marathon, even if he took a scenic route to get there after an embarrassing train station blunder, having attended a Newcastle football match.

Shearer couldn't help but regale the story on The Rest is Football podcast with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards. The Match of Day pundit and former England striker explained: "He was meant to get on the 5.59pm train from Newcastle to London to come and watch and support Will, as we all were down here.

"He got there five minutes early, and then he got on the train. Then, [after] 15 minutes on the train, he heard the announcement, 'Welcome to everyone who's got on this train to Edinburgh.' And it was non-stop all the way to Edinburgh! He's had to go from Newcastle to Edinburgh, and that's the last train he could get on."
To Young's credit, he didn't write off getting to London, catching an overnight bus from one capital city to another. Shearer added: 'He looked at different modes of transport, flight, car.
'He got on the f***ing Megabus, the 10pm Megabus, which costs him £30 from Edinburgh to London and he got in at 6.45am this morning into London. So I said to him, 'You are meant to be looking after my f****** daughter in the future!'"
As Lineker and Richards praised Young for making such an effort, Shearer quipped: "He said he stopped at Dunbar, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield. I said, 'Oh, you idiot!'"
While Young is unlikely to hear the end of the incident anytime soon, he has clearly formed a strong bond with his beau's dad. He is currently in the midst of his Newcastle Falcons testimonial year, which is supporting the Alan Shearer Foundation, which supports the lives of people with a wide range of complex needs, and the My Name's Doddie Foundation, an MND charity in the name of late Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir.

A recent Pre-Lions Dinner, organised by Young's testimonial committee, raised funds for both charities. The Shearer Foundation expressed its thanks on social media, posting: 'Thank you Micky Young for choosing The Alan Shearer Foundation along with the My Name is Doddie Foundation as your chosen charities to support during your testimonial year!'
Earlier this year, Young shared a picture from the Alan Shearer Foundation ball and wrote: 'We had a great night at the ASF ball on Saturday…we're proud to be supporting the Alan Shearer Foundation as one of our chosen charities throughout the testimonial year.'

The picture featured Young, Chloe, Alan, his wife Lainya, Will and the Shearers' other daughter, Hollie, with her fiancé, Joe Marchant, who also happens to be a rugby player.
Marchant, who has been with Hollie for more than three years, also seems to have the approval of her England legend dad, who once quipped on social media: 'I'm just glad he's not a footballer!'

Today's rugby news as Wales star stands out in Lions defeat and team-mate hits back at slurs

Today's rugby news as Wales star stands out in Lions defeat and team-mate hits back at slurs The latest rugby news stories in the wake of the Lions' defeat to Argentina British and Irish Lions' Tomos Williams (Image: PA Wire ) Here are the latest rugby headlines on Saturday, June 21. Welshman Williams lays down Lions marker Tomos Williams laid down an early marker for a place in the Lions Test team after an impressive appearance off the bench against Argentina on Friday night. ‌ Williams replaced Alex Mitchell in the second half, injecting urgency and moments of class into the Lions play as they initially fought their way back into the match before succumbing to a 28-24 defeat. There were the usual deft touches and a real tempo to everything the Welshman did before a beautiful flat pass on the line sent Tadhg Beirne crashing over for a try. ‌ Sky Sports pundits Conor Murray and Sam Warburton were both impressed, picking out Williams as one of the players who really impressed on the night. Mitchell's service had been generally good in the first-half but his box kicking was loose at times. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Warbuton said: "I think Tomos Williams was very good and made an impact. It's going to be so tight for that number nine jersey." Fans on social media backed Williams to force his way into the Test team despite arguably starting the tour behind Ireland's Jamison Gibson-Park and Mitchell in the pecking order. Article continues below One said: "Personally, the one player to shine was Tomos Williams. He scanned everything, raised the tempo, cool, calm and collected. Accuracy and timing of passing. Got to be in the test team." Another added: "Tomos Williams' distribution is catching the eye. He's already putting his hand up for selection." Fellow Welshman Jac Morgan had a solid outing in the seven jersey, with one turnover standing out before being replaced by Henry Pollock early in the second-half. ‌ Van der Merwe not bothered by slurs Duhan van der Merwe says slurs against his right to play for Scotland and the Lions no longer hurt him, insisting he has worked hard to become a two-time tourist The South African-born Scotland star is one of the current Lions players who have been targeted by some critics because they were born in different countries. He qualifies for Scotland on residency and has gone on to become the nation's leading try scorer since moving there from his homeland in 2017. He faced abuse on the last Lions tour to South Africa, with fans labelling him "Spring-Jock", while some have again questioned his selection for this year's trip. ‌ Speaking to the Guardian about representing Scotland, he said: "When I speak about it, I get really emotional because it's a country that has given me so much when I had nothing. "I had a failed medical [at Edinburgh] and at that time it would have been easy for them to say: 'Look, you've failed your medical – off you go.' But they looked after me. "I went over as a young boy and people don't understand how hard it is, leaving your family behind, leaving everything behind, going to a country where you don't know how things work. ‌ "People don't see the amount of hard work and sacrifice you put in because I wouldn't be sitting here without it." On the abuse he has received, he added: "I always knew they were going to get stuck into me," he said. "There were a lot of personal messages on social media towards me. ‌ "I just dust it off because I know how hard I've worked to get to where I am. You always have people on social media who are going to bring you down and slate you, but I've got to a point in my career where it doesn't faze me at all." Itoje wants 'tippy tappy' rugby to stop British and Irish Lions captain Maro Itoje has told his team-mates to stop playing "tippy-tappy" rugby and focus on becoming a powerhouse team opponents won't be able to live with. Itoje cut a frustrated figure after the Lions' 28-24 defeat to Argentina and was disappointed with a lack of aggression and directness at times. Andy Farrell's side coughed up possession on numerous occasions as they tried to force passes that simply weren't on. ‌ It all led Farrell to bluntly tell the squad some aspects of the performance were simply unacceptable as the famous team were given a stark reality check before heading to Australia. Itoje said: "When we were on it, we looked good, we just need to do it more consistently. "At times we were playing tippy-tappy rugby and that's not what we want to be. We want to be an aggressive team. We were nowhere near as accurate or as consistent as we wanted to be. We only showed glimmers of what we can do. Article continues below "Argentina showed us where we are lacking. I am happy we had a hard-fought game. "We live and learn. This is only match one. "The fans were amazing and showed us a glimmer of what it will be like in Australia."

Nicolas Jackson says he is ‘so angry at myself' after red card in Flamengo loss

The Senegal striker was shown a straight red card – just four minutes after coming off the bench – for an aggressive studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas in Friday's 3-1 defeat in Philadelphia. It came amid a calamitous six-minute spell in the second period in which the Blues also conceded two goals to surrender their half-time lead. It was also Jackson's second dismissal in just four appearances having also been given his marching orders for a forearm crack on Newcastle's Sven Botman in a Premier League match last month. 'I want to say sorry,' Jackson wrote on Instagram on what was a 24th birthday to forget. 'To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down. 'Another red card… And honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation. 'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a moment in football that went the wrong way. 'No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me. 'Sorry. Sorry, Sorry.' 🔴⚫️ A comeback win for @Flamengo!#FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 21, 2025 Jackson's moment of madness, in which he forcefully caught Lucas on the shin, effectively ended Chelsea's hopes of getting back into the Group D contest at Lincoln Financial Field. Enzo Maresca's side were already reeling after Pedro Neto's well-taken 14th-minute opener was cancelled out by Bruno Henrique after 62 minutes and quickly followed by another goal for veteran Danilo. Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring seven minutes from time, putting Flamengo in charge of the group and potentially making Chelsea's route through the tournament complicated. Defender Marc Cucurella suggested discipline was an area Jackson needed to work on. The defender told DAZN: 'He is young player, he has a lot of quality, he maybe needs to improve this a little bit. We are here to improve, we are not perfect so it is part of the game.' Maresca did not deny the sending-off was damaging, though he tempered criticism by claiming it was not a clear-cut decision. Maresca said: 'Those six minutes completely changed the dynamic of the game. 'I'm not 100 per cent sure that it's a red card compared to the Newcastle one, but it can be and the referee decided it. 'It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in these things. He knows very well that both situations were not something good for the team.' Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, now the manager of Flamengo, backed Jackson to bounce back. 'It was a little mistake,' he said. 'It was a clear red for me but it is a small detail for a player who can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.' Chelsea, who now have three points from their opening two games, face ES Tunis in their final group game on Tuesday night (2am Wednesday BST).

'World-class' recording studio planned for Newcastle Quayside

A new £1.8m "world-class" recording studio could be open by the end of the year. Newcastle City Council said it was hoping to home the four-storey facility in the Grade II listed Coronation Building, owned by the Live Theatre, on the East Combined Authority (NECA) has now agreed to fund the scheme using money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said: "It's about telling young people making music – you can do it here." As part of a report detailing the investment, NECA said north-east England had long struggled to attract investment from major music industry operators. Sam Fender was an "anomaly rather than the norm", it report said it was difficult to get private investment for such a "world-class music recording facility" in Newcastle due to "excessive upfront and operational costs". NECA said by funding this facility it would attract major talent, nurture local acts and drive economic growth. The space would also contain areas for filming and photography, as well as podcast studios. 'Cutting-edge space' Newcastle City Council leader Labour's Karen Kilgour said the facility would "cement the city's growing reputation" for its music scene."This is an incredibly exciting project, and while there is much still to do, we look forward to it getting off the ground," she local authority said it hoped the studios would be open by the end of the year, though the plans are yet to receive planning permission or listed building consent. Live Theatre head Jacqui Kell said the team was "thrilled" by the investment. She said: "[The money] will transform the building into cutting-edge creative space and attract major music talent to the city while supporting emerging local artists."
