PM heaps praise on World Bank country director
ISLAMABAD: In a sendoff dripping with praise, the World Bank's outgoing Pakistan boss Najy Benhassine on Thursday gave Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif a full-blown economic endorsement, crediting him with dragging the country back from the economic brink and calling his leadership 'transformational.'
During a farewell meeting, Benhassine did not hold back, applauding Sharif and his economic crew especially Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb for steering Pakistan away from a catastrophic default and laying down the yellow brick road to recovery.
'Under Prime Minister Sharif's leadership, the economic team saved Pakistan from the threat of default and set it on the path to stability,' Benhassine said, calling the PM's game plan a roadmap out of ruin. 'Despite daunting challenges, your leadership helped transition the country from crisis to growth.'
Top ministers and World Bank brass – including Operations Manager Giles Dragelis – turned the meeting into a full-blown praise parade for Team Shehbaz, hailing their gritty handling of Pakistan's fiscal nightmares. Benhassine, who served through one of Pakistan's rockiest financial chapters, did not forget the 2022 floods, either. 'You worked tirelessly for the relief and rehabilitation of flood-hit communities,' he said, adding that the nation would not forget the government's hustle.
Sharif, ever the diplomat, returned the love and praise with gratitude and applause for Benhassine's role in beefing up the World Bank's game plan in Pakistan.
'You played a pivotal role in strengthening the partnership between Pakistan and the World Bank,' Sharif said. 'Your cooperation and dedication will be remembered in kind words by the people of this country.'
Sharif chalked up the turnaround to grit, grind, and some serious elbow grease. 'Stability didn't happen overnight, it is the result of tireless work by a dedicated team,' he declared. With heavyweights like Ishaq Dar, Ahsan Iqbal, and Muhammad Aurangzeb in the room, Sharif bid farewell to Benhassine with a hint of sentiment.

‘Hum Sab Pakistan': LCCI holds interfaith moot to express unity
LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Thursday organised 'Hum Sab Pakistan' Interfaith Conference to express national unity and interfaith solidarity. LCCI Senior Vice President Engineer Khalid Usman stressed the need for unity. He said that we may belong to different faiths but we are united by one identity, Pakistan. Our purpose must be collective progress, national strength and peace for all. He said that mutual understanding and respect are the building blocks of a just and prosperous society. Former LCCI president Muhammad Ali Mian urged all segments of society to come together to build a stronger and more peaceful Pakistan. He said religious harmony is a necessity for national development. We must all work together to ensure that our future generations inherit a tolerant and united country. Punjab forms task force to boost agri research links
LAHORE: The Punjab government has constituted a task force to enhance coordination between academia and research institutions and to develop a joint strategy aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector. The task force will submit its recommendations within 15 days which will then be forwarded to the Chief Minister of Punjab for approval. Members of the task force will maintain their individual identities while fostering greater collaboration and promoting research. Additionally, coordination with the private sector and international institutions will also be ensured. The formation of the task force was ordered by Secretary Agriculture Punjab, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, during a meeting held at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF). The meeting was attended by UAF Vice Chancellor Zulfiqar Ali, Chairman of the National Seed Authority Dr Asif Ali, Chief Executive of PARB Dr Abid Mahmood, Consultant to the Punjab Agriculture Department Dr Muhammad Anjum Ali, along with agricultural experts and researchers. Addressing the meeting, the secretary of Agriculture emphasised that in order to modernise the agriculture sector all stakeholders must adopt a joint strategy. He noted that stronger coordination between academia and research institutions would yield better outcomes. He added that the government is generously allocating resources to revive the agriculture sector, and a consultative session has already been held with all relevant stakeholders in this regard. He further stressed that practical measures grounded in modern research are essential to boost agricultural productivity. Highlighting cotton production as a major challenge, he underscored the need for a long-term policy. The secretary also pointed out the urgent requirement to introduce superior germplasm, develop new climate-resilient varieties, and ensure the availability of high-quality seeds to farmers. Punjab budget: $428.54m foreign-funded uplift projects included
LAHORE: Foreign-funded development projects of USD 428.54 million have been included in Punjab budget for FY 2025-26. These projects focused on improving water supply & sanitation, urban development, environment, irrigation, agriculture, physical infrastructure, health, education, skills development and IT & governance. As per budget document, foreign engagement in Punjab's development financing primarily takes two forms: project-based loans and grants (Foreign Project Assistance) and programme-based loans (budgetary support). Loans obtained from multilateral donor agencies through the Federal government for specific foreign-assisted development projects are termed as Foreign Project Assistance. Programme loans, on the other hand, provide direct budgetary support, linked with indicators and results, named Disbursement Linked Indicators and Result Based Lending. The Punjab government, in line with its policy parameters on foreign borrowing, is guided by a preference for concessional financing and longer maturities, ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability. World Bank-funded projects are: Punjab Clean Air Programme, Getting Results: Action, Delivery of Quality Education Services; Punjab Rural Sustainable Water Supply & Sanitation Project (PRSWSSP); Punjab Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture Transformation Project (PRIAT); Punjab Urban Land Systems Enhancement (PULSE) Project; Punjab Human Capital Investment Project; Punjab Resource Improvement and Digital Effectiveness; Punjab Family Planning Programme (PFPP); Punjab Affordable Housing Programme (PAHP); National Health Support Programme; Punjab Tourism for Economic Growth Project (PTEGP); Punjab Cities Programme and Punjab Green Development Programme (PGDP). The ADB-funded projects included: Construction of Jalalpur Irrigation Project; Punjab Intermediate Cities Improvement Investment Programme; Project Readiness Financing (PRF) for Punjab Water Resources Management; Project Readiness Financing for Punjab Urban Development Projects; Improving Workforce Readiness in Punjab Project; Developing Resilient Environment and Advancing Municipal Services (DREAMS) in Punjab; Responsive Ready and Resilient STEM Secondary Education in Punjab.
