For its dedicated audience, the North Carolina alt-country-meets-indie rock band Wednesday is an exemplar in evocative songwriting, where whole worlds are found in short lyrical lines.
And that says nothing of what they sound like. The most exciting band in

Pavement in equal measure
, a distinctive sonic fabric of lap steel, guitar fuzz, folksy and jagged vocals.
On Sept. 19, they will release their sixth and most ambitious full-length, 'Bleeds.'
'My songwriting is just better on this album,' Wednesday's singer and songwriter Karly Hartzman explains. 'Things are said more succinctly ... the immediacy of these songs was the main growth.'
Wednesday began as Hartzman's solo project, evidenced in 2018's sweet-sounding 'yep definitely.' They became a full band on 2020's 'I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone,' a dive into guitar distortions, and 2021's 'Twin Plagues,' a further refinement of their 'creek rock' sound. The lineup consists of Hartzman, bassist Ethan Baechtold, lap steel player Xandy Chelmis, guitarist Jake Lenderman and drummer Alan Miller. Some also tour with
Lenderman's solo project, MJ Lenderman.

Wednesday's last album, the narrative 'Rat Saw God,' was named one of
the best albums of 2023
by The Associated Press partially for its uncanny ability to dive into the particularities and
complications of Southern identity

On 'Bleeds,' a band evolves
'Originally, I was going to call it 'Carolina Girl' but my bandmates did not like that,'' Hartzman jokes.
'Bleeds' comes from the explosive opening track, 'Reality TV Argument Bleeds.'
She likes how the band name and album title sound together — ''Wednesday Bleeds,' which I feel like I do, when I play music ... I'm almost, in a way, bloodletting and exorcising a demon.'
Lyrically, 'Bleeds' features some of Wednesday's best work — even in the revisiting of an older song,
'Phish Pepsi,'
that hilariously references
both the jam band
and the
most disturbing movie
released in 2010 — a kind of specificity born from Hartzman's writing practices. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she and Lenderman 'wrote 20 lines of writing each day,' a practice adopted from
Silver Jews' David Berman
. She's also a documentarian of memory: She takes notes of things her friends say and images that are affecting, to later collage them together in songs.
'The well never runs dry,' Hartzman says. 'Because I've admitted not everything can come from inside. I need to look outward outside of myself for inspiration.'
Remembering, she says, 'is the goal for most of the (expletive) I do. ... I care. I want stories to persist.'
Storytelling through song
'Bleeds' manages cohesion across a variance of sound. 'Wasp' is hard-core catharsis; lead single 'Elderberry Wine' drops guitar noise for shimmery, fermented country. 'Wound Up Here (By Holding On),' which references the Appalachian poet Evan Gray, is a pretty indie rock track about a hometown hero who drowns.
The quietest moment on the album, the plucked 'The Way Love Goes,' was written as 'a love song for Jake when we were still together. 'Elderberry Wine' as well.'' Hartzman explains. ''Elderberry Wine' is kind of talking about me noticing slight changes in a relationship.'
These are not breakup songs; they exist right before the point of dissolution. 'Sweet song is a long con / I drove ya to the airport with the E-brake on,' she sings on the latter.
Later: 'Sometimes in my head I give up and / Flip the board completely.'
'I'm understanding how sound creates emotion. That's what I'm learning over time,' Hartzman says of her musical growth. 'I'm also listening to more music with every year that passes. So, my understanding of what's possible, or what I can be inspired by, shifts.'
A number of the songs pull from childhood memory, as they always have across Wednesday's discography. 'I think about growing up a lot,' she says. 'When I think of trying to tell ... a story that's vivid and intense, that's just the easiest time in my life, where everything felt vivid and intense.'
Longtime fans of the band will find recurring themes and characters from past songs. For example, 'Gary's' from their 2021 album returns as the 'Bleeds' closer in 'Gary's II,' where he gets into a bar fight.
'In a way, I'm writing the same songs over and over, but I'm just trying to make them better,' she says.
There is always more humanity to excavate. And often, those emotions, 'they aren't done with you,' she adds. 'They're not letting you go.'
So, let the bloodletting begin.

Cubs legend Sammy Sosa returns to Wrigley Field after 20-plus-year hiatus
Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Legendary Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa returned to Wrigley Field for the first time in more than 20 years on Friday before Chicago's afternoon game with the Seattle Mariners. Sosa, who is set to be inducted into the Cubs' team Hall of Fame this year, arrived at the iconic North Side ballpark in a black SUV. He was greeted by owner Tom Ricketts, who embraced him in a hug as he exited the vehicle. Sosa became the face of the Cubs franchise where he played 13 seasons after coming in a trade from the crosstown White Sox in March 1992. A seven-time All-Star, Sosa hit 545 homers in 1,811 games with the Cubs and hit a franchise-record 66 in 1998 when he was named the NL's MVP. Sosa, now 56, played his final game with the Cubs at Wrigley on Oct. 2, 2004, when he homered and had two hits in an 8-6 loss to Atlanta. During his years with the Cubs, Sosa appeared to bulk up drastically and was a headliner in a generation of baseball's biggest names linked to performance-enhancing drugs. The Cubs traded him to Baltimore with cash in February 2005 for three players. Sosa appeared to acknowledge using performance-enhancing drugs in December when he released a statement saying he was sorry for mistakes, without specifying them. 'There were times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games,' he said in the statement. 'I never broke any laws. But in hindsight, I made mistakes and I apologize.' On Friday morning, Sosa posed for photos with rising Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong outside the team's clubhouse and a video showed Sosa embracing manager Craig Counsell in his office before the game. But that's not all: "Daniel Craig was supposed to be doing these lines and he couldn't be here," Johnson announces, before the man himself comes out to announce an exclusive sneak peek of the movie. In the new teaser, we see Craig and Josh O'Conner in a church, with Mila Kunis as law enforcement investigation a crime. "This is the holy grail," Craig's Benoit declares. "This was dressed as a miracle It's just a murder And I solve murders". We'll see how it all plays out when "Wake Up Dead Man" premieres on Netflix on December 12, 2025! Netflix Tudum 2025 is the first time the event is being held in the United States (taking place in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum) and streamed live on Netflix. And to celebrate, the streamer brought out the stars of some of its biggest and most beloved titles, including "Ginny & Georgia", "Outer Banks", "Forever" and "My Life with the Walter Boys". Led by lead Pogue Chase Stokes, the actors all came together sweetly for a "class photo" to commemorate the momentous occasion. "One Piece" fans got a sweet look back at adventures past during the Netflix Tudum 2025 event, as well as exciting peeks on all of the "big" things to expect next. And that includes an adorable introduction to Tony Tony Chopper, who will be voiced in the new season by Mikaela Hoover. "The biggest thing we get to tell you: you know what's up, the crew gets a little bigger this season", actor Iñaki Godoy teased to the screaming audience "And we get to introduce you to him right now. The reindeer you always wanted: Tony Tony Chopper." After a cookie-filled cameo from The Cookie Monster, big-screen best buddies Ben Affleck and Matt Damon rose from the Netflix "N" to crowd cheers and lots of iPhone-camera flashing to introduce their new crime drama "The Rip", which if coming to the streamer on January 16, 2027. Joined by fellow "The Rip" castmates Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor and Catalina Sandino Moreno, the actors explain that a "rip" is something you pull from a crime scene. In the film's case, it's cash, and a lot of it. And speaking of ripping, the famous buds hilariously ripped into each other during the presentation of a never-before-seen clip of the upcoming film (alas, Netflix hasn't published the video online), which channels some of their favorite movies, including "Heat" and "Training Day". "Ben would turn on all of these guys for a cookie," Matt quipped, with Affleck biting back about his bushy-bearded pal: "I trusted Matt would shave the beard before Tudum but here we are!" If there's anyone we trust to bring an excellently spooky "Frankenstein" adaptation to the big screen, it's Guillermo del Toro! With her fifth movie set for Netflix, we're officially entering the "Sarah Carson Universe" — the Netflix Tudum 2025 host will next be seen in the romantic title "My Oxford Year" for the streamer. And keeping with the tradition of having a hunky co-star (Carson cutely name-dropped Taron, Nicholas, Wolfgang and Kyle), the actress announced that she will be joined by "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" heartthrob Corey Mylchreest, who showed up alongside Carson onstage to announce that "My Oxford Year" will hit Netflix on August 1, 2025. As anticipated, a fresh full-length trailer for the long-awaited "Happy Gilmore" sequel is officially here, announced by original cast mates Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald during tonight's Tudum showcase. In case you want to immediately feel old, "Stranger Things" actors Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp and Caleb McLaughlin took to the Tudum stage to share some adorable behind-the-scenes clips from the sci-fi hit's early days.
