
Edinburgh private school Fettes College warns of staff cuts
The school's fees range from £5,000 to £18,000 per term depending on age and whether pupils are boarding there but, as reported by The Scotsman, it is considering cutting staff amid financial pressures.
The private school said that factors such as the introduction of VAT on fees and a rise in National Insurance were "having an impact on our costs and numbers" despite Fettes College being "financially very well managed".

It is undertaking a consultation process aimed at cutting staff which "may result in some redundancies".
The school employs around 125 teaching staff and 210 operation staff for a payroll of £15.4million, with its latest accounts showing income of £24.2m and outgoings of £26.2m.
Fettes College said in a statement: "Various factors have conspired to increase costs on all organisations and schools are not immune, particularly with the recent imposition of VAT on school fees and rise in National Insurance contributions.
"Despite being financially very well managed with a strong student roll, these factors are having an impact on our costs and numbers, and we are obliged to run our operations as efficiently as possible.
'These headwinds obviously affect our families too, and our parents need to be certain that we are taking the necessary decisions to run the school efficiently and to use their money effectively.'
Private schools were previously exempt from VAT, but the UK Government changed that policy in an effort to raise around £1.8bn a year for state schools.
Earlier this month a legal challenge by private schools, pupils and parents was rejected by the High Court.

The Welsh Government have been warned that Bluetongue rules 'risk devastating farmers and livestock markets right the way along the border. MP for Brecon, Radnorshire and Cwm Tawe David Chadwick and Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds have demanded urgent action to support farmers in Powys and across the Welsh marches. New rules set to come into force on July 1 will see sheep unable to cross the Welsh border unless it has had a bluetongue test, even if it has been vaccinated, which can cost as much as £70 per animal. The Welsh Government has relaxed rules on cattle to allow vaccinated animals to enter, however sheep will not be subject to the change despite there being over 8 million sheep being farmed in Wales in 2024. Much of the trade taking place across the England-Wales border and local farmer James Gittins warned that "in the worst-case scenario, we are going to see the numbers of lambs produced in Wales drop by 10 to 20 per cent, from which it may never recover." Livestock markets such as Builth, Prestige and Welshpool are also set to be massively hit by the rules. In Westminster on Thursday, Mr Chadwick questioned the UK Government EFRA Minister about how it plans to prevent a de facto veterinary hard border between England and Wales and protect cross-border farms from economic harm. Chadwick warned that the cost of testing 'is a devastating burden our local farmers cannot afford to take on at a time they are already under such significant financial pressure'. While acknowledging the seriousness of the issue, the Minister declined to commit to additional support, citing devolved powers. 'These sudden and costly changes risk devastating farmers and livestock markets right the way along the border,' said Mr Chadwick. 'Cross-border movement is essential to how agriculture works in this region, it's not optional. If nothing changes, this will do serious damage to rural livelihoods and the local economy. 'We need urgent coordination between the Welsh and UK Governments to ease the burden and protect our farms.' In the Senedd, Jane Dodds raised the impact the policy is having on farmers' mental health, and urged the Welsh Government to work more closely together with a focus on vaccination over an unworkable testing and licensing scheme. Both representatives are calling for a joined-up, four-nation response to bluetongue, including surge funding for testing and vaccination. 'I've spoken with farmers, vets, and local markets and the message is clear, the current plan is unworkable,' said Ms Dodds. 'Testing is costly, slow, and does nothing to support already stressed farm communities. 'Vaccination must be at the heart of our response. We need a united approach between both Cardiff and London that puts farmers' wellbeing and practical realities first.'

Teachers at Sir Tony Blair's former college are facing redundancy after Labour's VAT raid on private school fees. Fettes College in Edinburgh, which charges up to £54,000 a year, is examining its options for reducing staff after changes to VAT and National Insurance forced it into 'difficult' decisions. It comes as private schools experienced their biggest year-on-year drop in pupil numbers for more than a decade. A number of schools across the country have also had to close, with others revealing the cost of Labour changes had run into seven figures. Fettes College sits on 100 acres and offers mountain views, woodland and green space on campus. Pupils pay up to £15,150 a term, rising to £18,000 if they board. However, it has been hit by Chancellor Rachel Reeves's decision to remove the VAT exemption on private school fees from January 1 and hike employer National Insurance contributions from 13.8 per cent to 15 per cent. It is now running a consultation with staff that could lead to redundancies. Experts have previously warned that the raid could hurt thousands of Scottish children with special educational needs and disabilities. Pupils with an educational, health and care plan are exempt from the increase in fees, but the system does not exist in Scotland. Private school pupil numbers have already fallen by more than 11,000 across England, with some schools already forced to close after becoming unaffordable. Park Hill School in Surrey, London-based Falcons School and Wakefield Independent School are among those which have said they will shut their doors. The headmaster of Malvern College, based in Worcestershire, said the raid had cost his school £2m. Earlier this month, affected families brought a series of High Court legal challenges in a bid to reverse the Government's decision. However, judges dismissed all three claims in a single judgment. Julie Robinson, chief executive of the Independent Schools Council, said: 'This is an unprecedented tax on education, and it was right that its compatibility with human rights law was tested. 'We will continue to work to ensure the government is held to account over the negative impact this tax on education is having across independent and state schools.'
