Newly handed-over bulk water plant in Hlalanikahle operating successfully, says municipality

The Citizen10-05-2025

The Emalahleni Local Municipality has confirmed that the R19.7 million Hlalanikahle Bulk Water project, handed over to the community in March, is operating successfully.
Despite false claims on social media alleging the plant was non-operational, an on-site inspection on May 2 is said to have revealed the facility is fully functional and continues to supply water to the community.
Executive Mayor Clr Vusi Nhlapho, accompanied by the MMC for Environmental and Waste Management Clr Nombuso Mokwana, councillors, law enforcement, and technical officials, investigated the allegations.
'The information shared in that video is not only incorrect but also damaging and misleading,' said Nhlapho. 'Deliberately spreading misinformation wastes resources and undermines public trust.'
The municipality has urged residents to verify facts before sharing information.
'Let's build, not break, our community,' said Nhlapho. 'We need facts, not fear.'

Victor Mhlanga, speaking on behalf of the church, emphasised that this kind of outreach is at the core of their mission. 'We are here for our mission as a church,' he said. 'We believe in responsible social action. The economy is not doing well, unemployment is rising, and people are struggling. We use our offerings to help the less fortunate get a meal. This is not the first time we've done this, and it certainly won't be the last. As a church, we are happy to contribute to society.'
