Only One Out Of 10 Premises Licensed At Masai Fire Location

JOHOR BAHRU, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) has identified 10 premises operated by different companies within the site of a fire at a lorry and engine oil storage facility in Jalan Cenderai, Taman Kota Puteri, Masai, covering an estimated area of 64,664 square metres.
Johor Bahru Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad said investigations found that only one of the premises, a palm oil storage facility, had been licensed by the council and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).
He said the remaining businesses, including a car wash, vehicle parking, a used items dealer, and workshops, were found to be operating without valid licences, and the council would take further action against those involved.

In a written interview, Majuru showered praise on the expo for helping Zimbabwean companies to gain more knowledge about the requirements of the Chinese market. "The CAETE plays a pivotal role in deepening China-Africa cooperation by facilitating trade and investment opportunities, encouraging knowledge and technology transfer, and strengthening diplomatic and economic ties," he said. "For Zimbabwe, the expo served as a strategic platform to explore best practices, market trends, and trade opportunities within the Chinese market. Zimbabwean enterprises gained valuable insights into product standards, packaging requirements, and consumer preferences, which are critical for enhancing export competitiveness," Majuru added. The expo, which was held in central China's Hunan Province from June 12 to 15, gathered nearly 4,700 Chinese and African companies as well as over 30,000 participants. According to Zimtrade, a total of 10 Zimbabwean companies participated in the expo, covering various sectors, including horticulture, craft and leather products. "The participants reported positive outcomes, including networking opportunities, secured deals, and potential partnerships with Chinese buyers. The expo provided them with firsthand exposure to China's market dynamics, helping them refine their export strategies," Majuru said. Zimbabwe is already benefiting from existing trade protocols with China, particularly for citrus and avocado exports, and during the expo, significant potential was identified for macadamia nuts in the Chinese market, he said. "To capitalize on these opportunities, the government of Zimbabwe, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and in collaboration with ZimTrade, is actively working to align local production with Chinese market demands, ensuring compliance with international standards," Majuru said, adding that initiatives such as capacity-building workshops, trade missions, and exporter training programs are being implemented to strengthen Zimbabwe's export readiness. The CEO said that given the growing demand for Zimbabwean products in China, ZimTrade anticipates increased local participation in future expos. "ZimTrade, as the national trade development and promotion organization, is intensifying efforts to prepare more exporters through targeted initiatives such as business seminars, business-to-business matchmaking programs and follow-up trade missions to sustain business linkages," he said. "Additionally, the government of Zimbabwe is fostering an enabling trade environment through policy support, including the implementation of bilateral trade agreements and export incentives, ensuring that local businesses maximize such platforms," he added. "For Zimbabwe and China, the expo serves as a catalyst for enhanced trade relations, building on existing frameworks such as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and bilateral trade protocols," the CEO said, adding that Zimbabwe's participation underscores the government's commitment to expanding exports under the "Zimbabwe is Open for Business" mantra, with ZimTrade spearheading market penetration strategies. "These strategies aim to increase awareness of Zimbabwean products in China, strengthen institutional linkages between trade agencies, and align policy to ease market access for Zimbabwean goods," he added.

Rwanda exhibition focuses on innovation for sustainable agri-food systems

KIGALI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Rwandan farmers are showcasing a wide range of innovations transforming the country's agriculture sector at the ongoing 18th National Agriculture Show in Kigali, the capital. Running from June 18 to 27, the exhibition attracted about 500 exhibitors, according to Rwanda's Ministry of Agriculture. From smart irrigation systems and high-yield crop varieties to modern machinery, smart farming tools and climate-smart solutions, visitors can see real farming solutions in action which have been tested, proven, and ready to adopt. Also on display are tractors, precision seeders, harvesters, and other impressive machines that showcase how mechanization is transforming agriculture in Rwanda. Fredy Karegeya, head of seed production at a local seed company, said that the adoption of smart systems and innovation has enabled their seed production to thrive and make a real impact on food systems in the country. "We work on three crops including maize, beans and soybeans, the major one being maize. In maize seed production, we have almost four varieties and others in the pipeline coming soon after the performance trial. One of the maize varieties we developed is suitable for dry lands, a variety that produces high yields ranging from nine metric tons to 12 metric tons per hectare," Karegeya told Xinhua in a recent interview. "This maize variety is new and has the capacity to withstand the changing climate with a shorter maturity period of three months. This variety plays a key role in ensuring sustainable food systems, whereby farmers get high quality production and get seeds in time," he added. Earlier, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources Mark Cyubahiro Bagabe said the annual event offers a platform for showcasing technologies, innovative practices, and partnerships that address the challenges in agriculture from climate change to post-harvest losses.

Nigerian gov't backs 400-mln-USD rare earth plant

ABUJA, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government has announced its full support for the construction of one of Africa's largest rare earth and critical minerals processing plants in the central state of Nasarawa, expected to attract at least 400 million U.S. dollars in direct investment and create over 10,000 jobs nationwide. Dele Alake, minister of solid minerals development, said in a statement sent to Xinhua Monday that the project, funded by Hasetins Commodities Limited, aligns with the value addition campaign by the President Bola Tinubu-led government, emphasizing in-country processing and beneficiation of minerals. Alake described the development as a "significant milestone in efforts to boost investor confidence in Nigeria's mining sector," saying the plant will promote crucial skills transfer and enhance the solid minerals sector's contribution to the national economy. He said the local firm aimed to increase its current installed capacity of 6,000 metric tons by an additional 12,000 metric tons, with preparations for the groundbreaking of the expanded facility already underway. "I applaud the company for its strategic foresight and patriotic investment in the 400-million-dollar rare earth metals plant," the minister said. Hasetins Commodities Limited is a local private company specializing in the production of critical metals essential for high-tech applications and defense systems, including rare earth and platinum group metals. In a separate statement, the firm said its operational model incorporates early-stage beneficiation by pre-separating metals locally.
