Mohali: In a timely move to prevent flooding during the upcoming monsoon season, the Mohali administration has sanctioned Rs 2.5 crore for the cleaning and re-sectioning of Sukhna Choe (rivulet) in Zirakpur area.
The work orders have been cleared by deputy commissioner Komal Mittal, with the target of completing the project before the onset of the rains.
The cleaning project will be jointly executed by the municipal council (MC), public works department (PWD), drainage department, and the municipal engineering wing. The rivulet, which carries excess stormwater from Sukhna Lake and merges with the Ghaggar River at Bhankharpur, has been facing severe siltation issues that hinder water flow and increase the risk of flooding in Baltana and surrounding areas.
"We are getting Sukhna Choe cleaned for Rs 2.5 crore in collaboration with multiple departments. Instructions have been issued for immediate commencement and day-to-day monitoring of the work to ensure completion on a war footing," said DC Komal Mittal during a review meeting.
Silt buildup of nearly 6–7 feet has been identified in the rivulet bed, reducing its water-carrying capacity and posing a serious threat to nearby residential areas.
The low embankments and unchecked wild growth have also blocked the natural flow, which previously resulted in flash floods.
Notably, in Aug 2020, a sudden release of water from Sukhna Lake caused massive flooding in Baltana, submerging a police post under 8-10 feet of water and damaging marriage palaces, municipal parks, milk dairies, and the local cremation ground.
Highlighting the urgency of the work, the DC directed the executive engineer, drainage-cum-mining and geology division, to ensure the re-sectioning and cleaning are completed without delay. The Sukhna Choe can carry 6,000–7,000 cusecs of water, but only if restored to its original depth and width.
This is the first time such a comprehensive cleaning and flood-prevention project is being undertaken for Sukhna Choe, marking a proactive approach by the district administration to avert a repeat of past disasters.

Delhi gears up for monsoon: Traffic police to help man 71 key waterlogging hotspots

Deploying two personnel each to patrol 71 key waterlogging-prone areas, ensuring coordination with other departments — the Delhi Traffic Police is gearing up for the Southwest monsoon, which is expected to hit the Capital within the next two days, said senior officials. These 71 locations are among over 350 across Delhi that have been identified by the Public Works Department (PWD) as critical zones. Officials said these high-priority areas lie along major traffic corridors and remain vulnerable despite cleaning. They include: – 13 locations along Ring Road – 3 along Mall Road – 11 on the Rohtak Road stretch – 9 along Outer Ring Road – Other commonly affected zones such as Burari Road, Najafgarh Road, and the road under Tilak Bridge. Special CP (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhary said, 'Usually, the Traffic Police is not directly involved with waterlogging issues. But we would be coordinating with other agencies and offering our services this monsoon for a better commute in the Capital.' The decision was taken during an inter-department coordination meeting held on Friday in the presence of officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), Delhi Metro, Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), and the Delhi Police. Commenting on the development, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, 'The objective will be to first divert traffic from these points to avoid congestion. If a drain is overflowing at a certain point, alternate routes will be prepared in advance wherever possible. Traffic officials of the respective circle areas would be deployed to manually direct the traffic on these routes.' If flooding increases, traffic officials are also instructed to call upon other departments, including the PWD, and seek immediate installation of pumps to drain the water. The meeting also focused on the multiplicity of agencies at play in managing the waterlogging points. For instance, between the Sir Vishweshwaraiah Moti Bagh Metro Station and the Durgabai Deshmukh Metro Station, waterlogging after heavy rains could be expected due to work on a sewer line connection being undertaken by DUSIB. Similarly, under the Delhi Cantonment Metro station, the sewer line linking to stormwater drainage can be a trigger for flooding. 'In such areas, the Traffic Police will coordinate with the Delhi Metro and PWD to find common solutions during the monsoon season,' Additional CP Gupta said.

Retaining wall of Sengulam Tank in Coimbatore is ready, says CCMC chief

COIMBATORE: With the southwest monsoon already setting in, residents of Kuniyamuthur and nearby localities have urged the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) to expedite the remaining construction works along the Sengulam Tank. The 265-acre tank, near Kuniyamuthur, has frequently caused flooding in adjacent neighbourhoods during monsoon seasons. It poses a threat to nearby residential areas if protective measures are not completed on time. Recognising the risk, the CCMC initiated a Rs 15-crore project under the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure and Development Fund (TNUIDF) to construct a 1.85-kilometre-long retaining wall along the tank's western bund. The project also includes the laying of a tar road from Netaji Nagar in Kulathupalayam to the Kuniyamuthur-Sundakkamuthur Road, along with the installation of 120 streetlights. These developments are expected to significantly benefit over 3,500 residents, including those living in the 720 tenements built by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board in Ward 91. "In the past, we have suffered so much during the rains. Water from the tank would gush into our streets. We hope this time, the new wall and road will protect our homes," said M Rajalakshmi, a resident of Kulathupalayam.

City's civic infra fails first rain test

1 2 Lucknow: Revealing serious lapses in civic infrastructure maintenance, the service lane of Ring Road near Indiranagar Sector 18 collapsed after the season's first rainfall, forming a 15-foot-wide crater. The public works department has barricaded the area. As a temporary measure, the crater has been filled with debris and rubbish to prevent any untoward incident. Repair work has begun, but the blame game among govt agencies has already started. PWD sources alleged that Lesa had recently laid underground cables without proper coordination, which might have weakened the surface. Meanwhile, confusion prevailed over jurisdiction. Zone-7 zonal officer Akash Kumar said the area falls under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He added that sewer and drain maintenance is the responsibility of LMC. Residents reported that while the sludge from drains was removed during pre-monsoon cleaning, it was left on the roadside and washed back into the drains with the rain, defeating the purpose. Waterlogging was also reported near the Daliganj Crossing underpass, where a small crater developed following the downpour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Walgreens Keeps Quiet About This '9 Pills for $7' Generic Cialis Deal Health Alliance by Friday Plans Learn More Undo On G-20 Road, the road caved in after heavy rainfall. The road in front of Neem Upvan Park was submerged, making it difficult for residents to step outside their homes. In Sushant Golf City, Resident Welfare Association president ML Sahu shared that even a short spell of rain leads to severe water accumulation. Residents of Paradise Crystal Apartments, A-4, and Santushti-2 Apartments continue to face hardships due to chronic drainage issues. Near the Ram Manohar Lohia Park crossing, a tree was uprooted, blocking the road and causing traffic snarls. Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar conducted an inspection of the Smart City Control Room to review the status of flood pumping stations and monitor complaints received during Thursday night's rainfall. He directed officials to ensure the timely resolution of all complaints and to follow up with citizens for feedback after the issue is addressed. Highlighting the vulnerability of low-lying areas, he said all municipal teams are on high alert to tackle waterlogging and other rain-related issues. Helpline nos.
