News186 hours ago

Harry Brook was on fire for England with the bat on Sunday (June 22), but he missed out on a well-deserved century against India. The 26-year-old right-handed batter from Yorkshire came out to bat at No. 5 for the Ben Stokes-led side and made the most of two lifelines to score 99 runs from 112 balls with the help of 11 fours and two sixes.
He was sent back to the pavilion by Prasidh Krishna on the third ball of the 88th over of England's first innings on Sunday afternoon. By getting out on 99, Brook joined former opener Marcus Trescothick on an unwanted list. He became only the second English batter after Trescothick to get out on 99 in Tests against India.

England's favourite Harry makes India brood

CHENNAI: England's explosive batter Harry Brook had not even opened his account when he top-edged Jasprit Bumrah to Mohammed Siraj on Day Two in Leeds, Headingley on Saturday. Unfortunately for Bumrah and India, the pacer had overstepped and the batter got a new lease of life. However, that was not the only reprieve for the World No. 2 Test batter as he was dropped twice — one each when he was on 46 and 82 respectively. He made the visitors pay with his 112-ball 99 to take the team closer to India's first innings total of 471. A typical Brook's innings at a strike rate of 88.39 meant the hosts replied strongly, posting 465 in their first essay. For the unversed, the 26-year-old Yorkshire lad has the highest strike rate in Test cricket among specialist batters at the moment. Highly regarded for his destructive batting abilities irrespective of the format, the recently-appointed England white-ball captain has a kind of unusual relationship with India. Earlier this year, he was banned for two years from the Indian Premier League after pulling out of the competition for the second year running. Delhi Capitals was the franchise that signed him on both occasions with his latest paycheck during the 2025 mega auction being Rs 6.2 crore.

Ex-ENG Captain Praises Bumrah, Says 'He Would Get Me Out 10 Times Out Of 10'

Last Updated: Nasser Hussain has reserved big praise for star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is leading the bowling attack for Shubman Gill & Co. in the Leeds Test against England. Former England men's cricket team captain Nasser Hussain has reserved big praise for Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. According to Hussain, who has donned the hat of an expert and commentator after retirement from professional cricket, Bumrah is so good that if he had faced him then, he would have lost his wicket 10 times out of 10 against him. 'I would have had an absolute nightmare. Anyone that created that angle like he does would get me out for fun. He would get me out 10 times out of 10 in a five-match series. He is just brilliant, and I wasn't," Nasser said in a video shared by Sky Sports Cricket when asked, 'How would Nasser Hussain play Jasprit Bumrah?" — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) June 22, 2025 Nasser was one of the greatest English batters of all time. The Chennai-born cricketer played 96 Tests and 88 ODIs for Three Lions from October 1989 to May 2004 and scored over 8000 runs. He also served as England's captain in both the Test and ODI formats of the game. Bumrah's career in numbers Bumrah made his international debut for India against Australia during an ODI match played in Sydney in January 2016. Since then he has featured in 45 Tests, 89 ODIs, and 70 T20Is and has more than 400 wickets to his name. Bumrah played a big role in India's T20 World Cup title win last year, and for his super show with the ball, he won the Player of the Tournament award as well. He picked up 32 wickets for India in the 2024-25 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and bagged the ICC Cricketer and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year awards in 2024. Bumrah Backs Indian Fielders, Says 'Nobody Is Dropping Catches Purposely'

Last Updated: Indian players dropped at least half a dozen catches in England's first innings, and the hosts batters made the most of the reprieves. Star Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has come out in support of Indian players after they faced sharp criticism from fans and experts of the game for their poor performance on the field during England's first innings. Indian players dropped at least half a dozen catches on Saturday and Sunday combined to give multiple chances to England batters, and they made India pay as well for that. When asked about India's poor fielding in the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley, Bumrah, during the post-day conference, said that no player is dropping the catches purposely. 'Nobody is dropping catches purposely—it's part & parcel of the game. People will learn from this experience," Bumrah said. Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped at least three catches in the first innings for India, and Ravindra Jadeja also dropped a simple catch to give Ben Duckett. Bumrah on fire Bumrah picked up five wickets for India in the first innings of the Leeds Test. He finished with figures of 5 for 83 in 24.4 overs, and his fifer in the first innings helped him break multiple bowling records. He became the first Asian bowler to take 150 Test wickets in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries and also equalled R. Ashwin's record of most five-wicket hauls in the WTC. Ashwin played 41 WTC matches for India and picked up 11 fifers, whereas Bumrah has 11 five-wicket hauls to his name in just 36 matches. In addition, Bumrah also became the first Indian bowler to take three five-wicket hauls in England, and he also equalled Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls for India in Test matches played away from home. For India, apart from Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna picked up three wickets on Sunday, and two English batters were sent back to the pavilion by Mohammed Siraj. Ollie Pope top-scored for England in the first innings, and Harry Brook slammed 99 runs from 112 balls. The right-handed batter was unlucky to miss out on a deserving hundred. He became only the second English batter after Marcus Trescothick to get out on 99 in Test cricket against India. First Published: June 22, 2025, 23:33 IST
