PSG's Lee pleads with S. Korea boo boys to back team at World Cup
South Korea reached next year's finals in North America without losing a game but that does not tell the whole story.
The country's football association has been in the firing line, having scrambled about to find a successor after sacking the unpopular Jurgen Klinsmann in February last year.
They eventually settled on Hong, the decorated former skipper who had an unsuccessful stint as coach in 2013-2014, during which they went out in the group phase of the World Cup in Brazil.
The 56-year-old's return a decade later and the way the Korea Football Association (KFA) went about the dragged-out recruitment process went down badly with fans.
He was booed in his first game back and the jeers continued on Tuesday even as the hosts celebrated qualification for 2026 with a convincing 4-0 win over Kuwait in Seoul.
"There are people out there attacking and criticising our head coach and the KFA," the PSG midfielder Lee, who was on the scoresheet, told reporters.
"But since we players are also part of the federation and the coach is our boss, people's criticism also affects us if they get out of hand.
"I'd like to ask people to see the more positive side of our team. That will help us play better at the World Cup.
"I hope people will help us and keep supporting us."
Hong has won six and drawn four of his 10 matches in his second spell but performances have not always been convincing.
With skipper Son Heung-min struggling for form and fitness, South Korea passed up the chance to seal qualification sooner with 1-1 home draws against Jordan and Oman in March.
That came after a similarly flat 1-1 draw with Palestine in Amman, Jordan.

Benfica knock out Auckland in Club World Cup romp
With the Portuguese side leading by a goal at half-time the match was suspended because of a storm, eventually resuming two hours later. Auckland of New Zealand, the only Oceania Football Confederation representatives at the tournament, were thrashed 10-0 by Bayern Munich in their Group C opener and this defeat means they are eliminated. Despite their eventual collapse, Auckland battled hard in the first half and almost made it to the break unscathed. Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow made several good saves to keep Benfica at bay and the Portuguese side grew frustrated. Benfica took the lead deep into first half stoppage time when Gianluca Prestianni was clumsily felled in the area by Haris Zeb. Di Maria, who converted a spot-kick in the opening 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors, sent Garrow the wrong way. At half-time the match became the fourth in the last four days at the tournament to be impacted by a suspension for adverse conditions, with a storm arriving at the Inter&CO Stadium. When play eventually resumed, Benfica came back out strongly. Vangelis Pavlidis bundled his way through and smashed home to double Bruno Lage's team's lead in the 53rd minute, with Renato Sanches netting the third 10 minutes later from outside the box with a deflected effort. Luxembourg midfielder Leandro Barreiro bagged a brace to expand Benfica's lead, tucking home at the back post from Pavlidis' cross for the fourth before netting from close range. NBA star Durant takes minority PSG stake
The club said in a statement that owners Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) had "signed an investment and strategic partnership agreement with Kevin Durant, one of the most decorated US basketball players of all time and a leading investor in sports and entertainment properties." It said Durant would acquire the stake "via his media and investment arm Boardroom". The club said QSI would cooperate with Boardroom "on a wide-series of commercial, investment, and content initiatives" including merchandise, media content US and international strategy and "potential Basketball/Multi-Sport expansion." "With Kevin, we look forward to developing ambitious initiatives that will drive the continued global growth of Paris Saint-Germain and QSI," said Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Chairman of QSI. Durant, 36, is a power forward with the Phoenix Suns. He won two NBA titles with the Golden State Warriors and has four Olympic gold medals, the last from the 2024 Paris Games. He said in the PSG statement that PSG and Paris were "a Club and a city that is so close to my heart.
