'Lucky number' incense helps Johor man win RM10.38mil Toto jackpot

KUALA LUMPUR: Combining his identity card number with that obtained from a lucky number incense helped a Johor banker win the RM10.38 million Toto 4D Jackpot last Sunday.
The 49-year-old said he had gone to a temple to make offerings on Wesak Day.
He said that at the same time, he also bought a lucky number incense, which when burnt would display several "lucky numbers"
"So I bet on the lucky numbers, combined with my identity card numbers, to form the pair of winning numbers – '3866 and 5899'.
"I bet on the same pair of numbers for six draws and they actually helped me to win the jackpot," he said.
Despite becoming a multi-millionaire, he said he would continue to work.
However, he said he planned to spend his winnings on travelling the world with his wife.
The May 31 draw saw 110 winners from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Sarawak share RM28,069,403 in winnings from the total RM34,511,559 Toto 4D Jackpot 1 with i-System tickets.

MSM Malaysia unfazed by influx of sugar imported from Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR: Local sugar producer MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd remains confident in its competitive position despite the influx of imported sugar from Thailand. The group is well positioned to compete with imported products, leveraging its established domestic scale and operational capabilities and will continue to maintain its market presence and deliver value to customers in the face of increased competition. Group CEO Syed Feizal Syed Mohammad said the company has a total scale of two million tons and is adopting a strategy of competing with imported sugar for a certain given volume. 'We still retain a good number of market share, and we have a specific price strategy to counter Thai imports, while the government considers other mitigating factors. 'Our refineries got good efficiencies, and we see significant improvement in Johor, so it's not a matter of economics,' he said after the company's 14th annual general meeting today. Syed Feizal said that special actions must be taken to mitigate dumping practices and that the joint industry has taken measures in that direction. MSM marked 2024 with a turnaround for the group, continuing its positive momentum to produce a year-on-year improvement, which was made all the more significant by a return to profitability. This progress was underpinned by stronger operational performance at MSM Sugar Refinery (Johor) Sdn Bhd and the continued optimisation of steady operations at MSM Prai Bhd. In FY24, MSM Malaysia recorded a profit before tax of RM75 million, a significant reversal from the loss before tax of RM28 million in FY23. Revenue grew 15% year-on-year to RM3.54 billion in FY24 compared to RM3.09 billion in FY23, supported by an 8% increase in sales volume and a 6% higher average selling price. The positive growth was underpinned by the execution of transformation and turnaround strategy, focusing on cost optimisation, efficiency enhancements and market expansion. Despite market challenges, including volatile raw sugar prices and rising freight costs, MSM Malaysia effectively managed risks through proactive hedging strategies and improved cost structures. 'FY24 marked a pivotal year for MSM Malaysia as we successfully delivered a significant turnaround, returning to profitability and achieving notable financial and operational improvements. 'One of the most significant contributors to our improved performance was stronger production efficiency. In 2024, the group recorded a capacity utilisation factor of 54%, up from 48% in 2023, while our yield improved to 96% from 95%,' Syed Feizal said. He noted that these gains were supported by operational discipline at both MSM Prai and MSM Johor, where they streamlined processes, enhanced preventive maintenance and improved energy efficiency. 'MSM will continue to mitigate input costs such as raw sugar, forex and freight with gradual hedging as part of risk management to ensure margin sustainability while optimising cost management through production and supply chain efficiencies,' Syed Feizal said. For 2025, MSM aims to expand market presence, particularly in China and the Asean region, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. The goal is to increase total export volumes to 360,000 metric tons in 2025, with an emphasis on value-added products, such as liquid sugar and premixes, from MSM Johor. Looking ahead, MSM Malaysia approaches 2025 with cautious optimism, supported by the progress achieved over the past year and the solid foundation established through its ongoing transformation. The company's priority will be to unlock greater operational efficiency while driving strategic growth initiatives to strengthen long-term sustainability. A key focus will be on boosting overall sales through enhanced domestic and export strategies, including targeted collaborations and partnerships. Separately, in a Bursa Malaysia filing yesterday, MSM Malaysia noted that the company aims to sustain growth amidst geopolitical challenges and market volatility. MSM Malaysia said it is closely monitoring market dynamics as the sugar industry continues to face challenges driven by persistently high input costs and volatile raw sugar prices, which are influenced by fluctuating global production. This is particularly heightened by the increased geopolitical tensions and ongoing trade wars, which may further disrupt global supply chains and foreign exchange rates. To address these risks, MSM Malaysia is reinforcing its domestic market position while managing export pricing pressures. The group is also leveraging steady domestic demand and actively pursuing opportunities in value-added products to diversify revenue streams. MSM Malaysia said engagement with government stakeholders remains a priority. The company is working to finalise a sustainable pricing mechanism for the domestic retail segment and advocating for effective controls on imported refined sugar. These measures are essential to support national food security and ensure the long-term sustainability of Malaysia's sugar industry.

Bank Islam launches IFiRST to support low-carbon transition

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd has launched the IHSAN Financing for Business Resilience, Sustainability and Green Transition (IFiRST) to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and mid-tier companies in adopting sustainable practices. Group chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed said the financing solution provides equitable and accessible support for businesses transitioning to a low-carbon economy. "This new financing solution reflects Bank Islam's commitment to a fair and inclusive transition across all segments of the economy," he said in a statement today. "By enabling greener practices throughout the entire value chain, we are supporting not just large companies but also the smaller businesses and ecosystem partners that play a vital role in reducing carbon emissions." He said IFiRST targets carbon-intensive sectors and provides access to facilities such as Bank Negara Malaysia's Low Carbon Transition Facility (LCTF). "This integrated approach helps businesses overcome financial and operational barriers in their sustainability journey, ensuring that no stakeholder is left behind," he added. As of December 2024, Bank Islam had achieved 93 per cent of its revised FY25 target of RM28 billion in sustainable finance and assets. This includes initiatives such as the Ihsan Sustainability Investment Account, SME SMART Eco Financing Programme-i, and access to the LCTF. "Bank Islam strives to be a strategic partner in assisting our customers to future-proof their businesses through advisory services, sustainable financing solutions, and knowledge-sharing platforms," said Mohd Muazzam. "Bank Islam plays a vital role in mobilising capital to empower corporates and businesses in adopting green technologies or solutions. These efforts will enhance economic resilience and support Malaysia in achieving its climate goals on schedule," he added. The bank plans to roll out its Climate Transition Plan, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

KGW Group doubles down on US market, forms logistics integration JV with China's Mingkun

SHAH ALAM: Malaysia's largest trans-Pacific logistics provider, KGW Group Bhd, is doubling down on the US market through a joint venture with China's Mingkun International Logistics Ltd. This move aims to capitalise on the manufacturing shift into Malaysia as US tariffs impact Chinese exports. CEO Roger Wong said the joint venture entity is already set up, with KGW as a minority partner helping Mingkun expand its local presence as a logistics integrator. 'The Mingkun and KGW Global joint venture is a response to the ongoing trade war. We are seeing more Chinese businesses move into Malaysia to avoid high tariffs,' Wong told SunBiz in an exclusive interview recently. 'We want to help these factories set up here instead of going to Vietnam or Indonesia. Many of them need a one-stop logistics solution, and we can be that partner,' he said. Wong said KGW Global and Mingkun aim to provide a comprehensive logistics solution as an integrator, especially for Chinese manufacturers expanding into Malaysia. 'Previously, KGW focused mostly on shipping because clients didn't need services like trucking or customs handling. But with these Chinese factories coming in, they want a one-stop solution because they are not very familiar with the local market,' he said. At the same time, Wong said, KGW is planning to grow its presence in Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam to help businesses in those countries ship goods to the US. 'We are expanding there to strengthen our US-bound logistics network. Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam are the three key markets we're targeting next – not so much to grow locally in those markets, but to move cargo from those countries into the US. That includes both traditional B2B shipments and e-commerce B2C,' he said. KGW is Malaysia's largest logistics provider in trans-Pacific trade, offering ocean and air freight, freight forwarding and warehousing services. In February, US-based Accelerated Global Solutions Inc (AGS) acquired a 15% stake in KGW. Wong said the partnership is accelerating KGW's push into US e-commerce. 'AGS operates a last-mile network in the US named SpeedX, handling deliveries for Shein and TikTok. They are embedding teams in our office. We are now scaling our US e-commerce product with them,' he added. About 60% of KGW's revenue is tied to the US. Wong said demand is surging as clients front-load shipments during the 90-day pause in the Trump tariffs, though not as high as during the pandemic. 'Container freight used to cost US$2,000. Now it can hit US$8,000 (RM34,000). Some shipments cost as much as the products inside. We have to pre-warn our clients,' he said. Wong believes Malaysia's low tariffs and new Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry rules requiring verified certificates of origin for US-bound cargo will increase the country's appeal to China-based exporters. 'These manufacturers require a comprehensive solution. That is why we are investing in people, facilities, and integrated logistics. We want to be their partner in Malaysia,' he said. Looking ahead, KGW plans to expand air freight services and SME-focused e-commerce fulfilment via US-based AGS. 'AGS does a bit of traditional logistics like air and ocean freight, but most of their core business has shifted to e-commerce. Their last-mile arm, SpeedX, is quite established in the US. They cover about 60–70% of the country compared to USPS or FedEx Ground, which is substantial.' Wong said the partnership will help KGW replicate that reach for exporters across Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. 'AGS helps the group scale its US operations faster. Before setting up KGW Global, the company was already doing more trucking, warehousing, and customs clearance in the US than in Malaysia. 'Our service isn't just about shipping – once it lands in the US, we also handle inland delivery. It's a huge country, and we manage everything from oversized and flatbed trucking to storage and clearance. 'AGS's presence strengthens us. They're now part of our group, and that makes things move more smoothly,' he said.
