Sarawak para-athletics team heads to Germany for training

KUCHING: A para-athletics team from Sarawak is set to travel to Germany for exposure and training to enhance their development, says Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.
The state Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister announced that the 13-member team of para-athletes and officials will visit Berlin from June 16 to 25 in a collaboration between Sarawak and Germany.
The athletes include Para Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold medallists in throwing and running events, she said at a press conference on Thursday (June 5).
"They will meet with a Paralympic sports association, sports psychologist, and nutritionist to gain useful tips and undergo training sessions.
"There will also be a career talk focusing on their future after athletics," Fatimah said.
The team will visit the Paralympic Sports Centre in Cottbus, Brandenburg, to gain insight into the setup there.
The trip will allow the para-athletes to train with German coaches and be assessed on their strengths and weaknesses, while Sarawak coaches will collaborate with their German counterparts.
Additionally, the athletes will participate in a German regional para-athletics championship to gain exposure and experience.
"We hope the athletes will benefit from the trip and improve their performance through this exposure and training," Fatimah said.
The para-athletics team is a major component of Sarawak's Para Sukma team.
At the last Para Sukma held in Kuching last year, the Sarawak para-athletics team won 33 gold, 24 silver, and 37 bronze medals.
The team has continued training since November last year and recently excelled in the Para-Athletics Borneo Circuit, securing 53 gold, 36 silver, and 15 bronze medals.
The Sarawak para-athletics team will compete in the National Para-Athletics Championship in Kuantan, Pahang, from June 26 to 29, which will select athletes for the upcoming 13th Asean Para Games in Thailand in January next year.

Daania shines on clay in Europe as mum holds fort at home
KUALA LUMPUR: National junior tennis player Daania Hazli has been making solid progress on clay in Egypt and Europe recently. Daania spent three weeks in Egypt in late April and early May where she reached the singles quarterfinals and doubles semi-finals, with Egyptian partner Jana Youssef, in Dakahlia (ITF J60). She also reached the doubles quarterfinals, with Malak Ismeil (Egypt), in Cairo (J60). Daania then helped Malaysia achieve a ninth-place finish in the Under-16 Billie Jean King Cup final qualifiers in Kazakhstan late last month. The national squad defeated Indonesia, Uzbekistan and the Philippines in the competition. Daania, who turns 15 tomorrow (June 24), then underwent a brief training block in Munich before reaching the singles semi-finals at Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic (J30). She also won the South Bavarian Championships in Germany, saving multiple match points in the under-18 final against German Tamara Ritzinger whom she beat 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 10-4. Hazli Zainuddin, who is Daania's coach and father, said her results have been encouraging considering she has not had much international exposure prior to this. "To reach the quarter-finals and semi-finals in a J60 is a good result for Daania as she is still adjusting to competing in international competitions," said Hazli when contacted in Germany today (June 23). "She showed great mental strength and determination to do well on clay, this was especially apparent in the South Bavarian Championship. "Our goal is to keep giving Daania the exposure she needs and give her the chance to earn more ranking points." Hazli paid homage to his wife, Alessandra Sarritzu, who has been left to manage the family coaching business back home while he and Daania have been on tour. "There have definitely been sacrifices made behind the scenes. Daania's mum (Alessandra) has single-handedly kept the family business running which has helped to cover 80 per cent of Daania's expenses," said Hazli. "This is not just Daania's journey, it is a family mission. Every tournament, every flight and every racquet stringing done is a collective effort. "With the right financial, technical and emotional support, Daania can become a world-class player. "This is why we are always hoping for more support. Without consistent funding, even the brightest talents risk being left behind." Hazli, who is also a former national head coach for Malaysia, is currently with Daania in Bruchkoebel (J100), Germany where she is scheduled to play this week.

Madrid coach Alonso says Rudiger complained of racist insult in Club World Cup win
CHARLOTTE: Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said his defender Antonio Rudiger had complained of a racist incident at the end of Sunday's 3-1 Club World Cup win over Mexican side Pachuca. Rudiger was visibly angered following an exchange of words with Pachuca's Gustavo Cabral after the final whistle and spoke to Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel. Cabral denied he had racially abused the German centre-back. Asked about the incident in the post-match press conference, Alonso said: "Toni told us something, we support Toni and we will see what happens. "I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken and we support Antonio because it's something unacceptable. "In football there is no tolerance for this, and if it happened, then measures should be taken. This is what Antonio has told us and we believe him. It's being investigated now," he said. Cabral, 39, spoke after the game and said his words had been misinterpreted by Rudiger. The Argentine said he had called the defender a "coward", with the Spanish phrase he used similar to another which is linked to racist abuse. "The referee made the racism sign but I was telling him the same thing the whole time – (coward)," said Cabral. Pachuca coach Jaime Lozano was also asked about the incident but said he was unaware of what had happened. "I just found out from you, you are letting me know, we did not talk about it in the dressing room, I haven't spoken to Cabral about this, I cannot give you an explanation about it because this is the first (I have heard of) this news," he said. "It cannot be justified at all but I will talk to him, I've known him for a little while and and I have never heard of something like that with Pachuca players.
