
Angola, US Firm to Sign Pact to Build $1.5 Billion Power Line
Symbion Power unit Hydro-Link will sign a pact with Angola's government on Tuesday to build a $1.5 billion private transmission line that will connect hydropower sites with mines producing critical minerals in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
The 1,150-kilometer (715-mile) connection between the two southern African nations will have the potential to deliver as much as 1.2 gigawatts of power from Angola's Lauca plant and other hydroelectric facilities to Congo's Kolwezi mining area, and supply mine operators such as Glencore Plc and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd., according to Hydro-Link.

World Bank grants South Africa a $1.5B loan for infrastructure upgrade and green energy transition
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — The World Bank granted South Africa a $1.5 billion loan to upgrade transportation infrastructure and help it transition toward a low-carbon economy, the country's National Treasury said Monday. Deteriorating rail systems, jammed ports and frequent blackouts have hindered vital industries like mining and auto manufacturing in South Africa, contributing to slow economic growth over the last decade in Africa's most developed economy. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and his coalition government have pledged to tackle corruption and decades of poor management as well as pursue reforms to get the country out of its economic rut and ease its extremely high unemployment rate. While it did not give specifics, the South African government said it expects the World Bank loan will enable inclusive economic growth and job creation by assisting in the removal of important infrastructure bottlenecks, especially in the energy and freight transportation sectors. 'This agreement reinforces the strong and constructive collaboration between the World Bank and the government of South Africa,' said the National Treasury. 'This partnership marks a significant step toward addressing South Africa's pressing economic challenges of low growth and high unemployment.' Additionally, because the financing has better conditions than conventional borrowing, such as a three-year grace period, it should reduce escalating debt-service expenses, it added. South Africa's 2025-26 budget has allocated over R1 trillion over the next three years toward critical transportation, energy, water and sanitation infrastructure while improving access to basic services. However, real gross domestic product was revised downward to 1.4% in 2025 from 1.9% previously projected by the Finance Ministry projected in March because of the worsening global outlook and the persistence of logistics constraints and higher borrowing costs. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said government debt is projected to stabilize at 77.4% of GDP in 2025/26. Earlier this year, the dismantling of USAID by the Trump administration cut around $436 million in annual funding to South Africa for HIV treatment and prevention, putting the program and thousands of health care jobs on the line. Godongwana said the country doesn't have the funds to cover the more than $430 million shortfall caused by the Trump administration's cuts in foreign aid, which have threatened the vast network of support for one of the world's largest HIV-positive populations. ___ AP Africa news:

Solis Announces Mineralisation Intersected at Chancho al Palo, Peru
HIGHLIGHTS Diamond drilling commenced at Chancho al Palo (100% Solis Minerals) with the first drill hole completed at a depth of 713 metres. A second drill hole is scheduled to commence shortly, approximately 200 metres west of the first drill pad. The first drill hole intersected fault-bounded iron oxide copper-gold ("IOCG") style mineralisation at 184 metres including visible chalcopyrite1. Porphyry style mineralisation has been encountered from 451 metres including the presence of chalcopyrite mineralisation. From 586 metres, IOCG-style mineralised breccias increase in frequency. Visible gold was observed at 620 metres. Assays from Chancho al Palo are due from ALS Global ("ALS") in July / August 2025. The Chancho al Palo drill rig and team will be mobilised to Ilo Este (100% Solis Minerals) once the planned 2,500 metre drill programme is completed. The first diamond drill hole, CAP-001-2025, concluded at a depth of 712.90 metres. Narrow, fault- bounded IOCG-style mineralisation was encountered in a breccia from 184.20 to 184.75 metres (Figure1). From 451.0 metres to 585.80 metres, a diorite intrusive was observed with trace sulphides including chalcopyrite, some higher portions more localised, in a more porphyritic setting (Figure 3). From 585.8 to 636.0 metres, the intrusive is traversed by narrow (0.5 - 1.0 metre width) IOCG breccias with more locally abundant sulphides, including chalcopyrite. At 619.90 metres, visible gold was observed in feldspathic alteration in the intrusive (Figure 2). From 673.0 to 712.90m (EOH) a structurally altered hornfels was encountered with silicification and magnetite alteration, some zones of abundant pyrite, and traces of chalcopyrite. The total programme at Chancho al Palo is planned for 2,500 metres or approximately four to five drill holes. Core has been logged and cut with samples to be sent to ALS for assaying in the coming weeks. Results are expected in July / August 2025. Chancho al Palo The drilling program at Chancho al Palo is designed to test priority geophysical and geochemical anomalies interpreted to represent IOCG and porphyry-style mineralization systems3. Key objectives of the planned 2,500 metre campaign include: Target validation: confirm geological and structural interpretation of induced polarisation and magnetic anomalies that vector targeting for potential IOCG and porphyry-style copper systems. Mineralisation confirmation: intersect and characterise primary copper mineralisation, with associated alteration halos (e.g., sodic-calcic, potassic), sulphide zoning, and potential pathfinder elements (Fe, Au, Mo, REEs) within targeted lithological and structural settings. Alteration system mapping: delineate the extent and geometry of hydrothermal alteration systems, to vector toward the core of mineralised zones and assess potential fluid pathways. Structural controls: evaluate the role of faulting, brecciation, and intrusive contacts in localizing mineralization, particularly within interpreted feeder zones or structural corridors. The hole was collared on a coincident magnetic and chargeability (IP) anomaly with favourable surface geological indicators some 200 metres north-west of a regional cross-fault. Such faults are known vectors for porphyry mineralisation at Solis Minerals' Ilo Este property located 17 kilometres to the south-east4. The geology is showing the presence of a mineralised system with epigenetic pyrite from 184.8 metres and traces of chalcopyrite in intrusive rocks from 451.0 to 585.8 metres (Figure 3). From 585.8 to 636.0m the intrusives are cut by narrow IOCG-style veins with some sulphides (including chalcopyrite) and one occurrence of visible gold observed to date (Figure 2). From 668.5m to EOH hornfels rocks (altered volcanics) are cut by magnetite breccias with magnetite and pyrite. The interpretation is that the hole is traversing the margin of a yet unidentified porphyry system (propylitic zone) that has been impacted locally by separate IOCG brecciation with mineralisation. The vectoring value of the hole will be augmented by the second drillhole, to be located 200 metres west, which is expected to enable the architecture of a potential porphyry system to be better understood. African market opens at Boardwalk Shops in Batavia
Kumba's African Market opened recently at the Boardwalk Shops in downtown Batavia, offering a selection of African clothing, home decor, food and more. The shop is run by Teta Porter, 44, of Plainfield, who also operates a brick-and-mortar store in Wheaton known as the African Continental Market which opened eight years ago. A West African refugee who came to the United States more than two decades ago, Porter said she wanted to come to Batavia in hopes of expanding her business. 'My reason is to test the market here in Batavia and try to bring the West African culture to the area because there are many people who don't know about these types of stores. I have customers who have walked into my shop and never seen anything like this,' Porter said. 'Some have to go all the way to Chicago to find things like this. 'It's a way of bringing African heritage here and make it easier for people to try it out,' she said. The name Kumba's African Market has a dual significance as Kumba was the name of Porter's grandmother. 'I wanted to remember and she also inspired me to go into business,' Porter said. She said 'Kumba' is 'a word used in my language which means the second girl child. If you say 'Kumba' people know that's who you're talking about. The second girl child is Kumba,' Beth Walker, executive director of the Batavia MainStreet group which oversees the Boardwalk Shops, said having the new store join this year's lineup of shops 'was really exciting as one of the goals of the Boardwalk is to offer something unique to the community.' A few days after opening last month, Porter hosted a Taste of Africa event where she said 'a lot of people tried things.' She said she believes her market will have a diverse clientele 'as there are many refugees in the DuPage area that I personally know.' 'I'm a refugee and I was resettled by World Relief in 2002 and when I came in it was a struggle,' she said. 'I had to drive miles to Bolingbrook or to Westmont so I realized there was a need and I said it would be easier if I could bring (African goods) close.' Porter said Kumba's African Market mimics those found in her native land 'where they make it a one-stop shop and have a little bit of everything.' 'There are foods, jewelry, crafts, bracelets and other things,' she said. 'Since we opened on May 9 people are surprised. Most of them have never seen these kinds of groceries.' Nancy Munro of Wheaton visited the Batavia location recently and said she 'loves seeing diversity in the market.' 'I love it. We need to see more of this,' Munro said as she exited the store. 'I like the dresses here. They are very unique, very colorful.' Pam Kautz of Geneva likewise stopped at the store recently and described it 'as being fun.' 'We like to try and look at new things,' Kautz said. 'I like to see new things, absolutely.'
