Melbourne Renegades' Hayley Matthews will miss WBBL season 11 due to a shoulder injury as she is set to undergo surgery.
Melbourne Renegades allrounder Hayley Matthews will miss the Women's Big Bash League season 11 due to a shoulder injury, the club announced on Thursday.
Matthews, pre-signed by the Renegades ahead of the WBBL Overseas Player Draft, was set for her fourth season in red. However, a shoulder injury sustained during the West Indies' recent ODI series has postponed her WBBL plans.
The world's top-ranked T20I all-rounder must withdraw to undergo shoulder surgery. Despite this, she will meet her national commitments, including captaining the West Indies and playing for her Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, before her surgery later this year.
Matthews would have occupied one of the Renegades' picks at Thursday's Big Bash drafts. However, the club now has all three overseas slots to fill during the event.
'We are clearly disappointed Hayley won't be with us this season. She's been instrumental during her time with the Renegades, not just with her performances but with her leadership and professionalism," General Manager James Rosengarten said.
'There's a very close relationship between the Renegades and Hayley, and we know it will continue next year and beyond. Hayley loves this club, and we share in her disappointment at not being available for this year's tournament."
Matthews' absence is a blow for the club, given her significant role in the Renegades' remarkable resurgence last season. The team recovered from a bottom-placed finish in WBBL 9 to win their maiden title at the MCG.
She had a career-best campaign in WBBL 10, scoring 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.6 and taking 14 wickets, earning her a spot in the WBBL 10 Team of the Tournament.

Historic India versus England Mixed Disability T20 Cricket Series starts in England on June 21
Jaipur: History will be made when the first-ever mixed disability T20 series between India and England starts in England on Saturday (June 21) at Taunton, the home of Somerset County Cricket Club. During the landmark seven-match T20Is tour, the teams will also play a match at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground on June 25. Led by Mumbai's Ravindra Gopinath Sante, India's mixed disability team arrived in London for the tour on June 15. The 16-member team, picked by the Differently abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI), has prepared for the series by playing three practice matches against the England Lions Mixed Disability team at the Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club in Exeter. Virendra Singh is the vice-captain of the team, while the team's head coach is former Rajasthan captain Rohit Jhalani. Before travelling to England, the Indian team had a week-long preperatory camp at the Jaipuria Cricket Academy ground in Jaipur. The team comprises six deaf, six physical disability and four intellectual disability players. Gill then made his Test debut in the Boxing Day Test match against Australia at the MCG and scored an unbeaten 48 as India completed a famous win after their infamous 36 all out in Adelaide. "He had that regal element about him. Just the way he played, and the shots he possessed. Especially against the quicks and the bouncing ball. He started off well during the Under-19 World Cup when Rahul [Dravid] was the coach. And just came through the ranks nicely," added Shastri. It's a challenge in itself when someone comes through, and everyone says this is the future of the country. More so in India, where expectations go through the roof. For all the pieces of the puzzle, Gill seems to have come through nicely. Having made it in the ODIs, he's now grinding it out in Test set-up.
