The week in charts: Sensex cheer, tariff truce, satellite scheme
The end of the conflict between India and Pakistan and a trade deal between the US and China propelled the Indian stock markets to put up their best single-day performance in four years. Meanwhile, the government plans to expedite the implementation of its satellite surveillance programme in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attacks.
Sensex roars
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on 10 May to end the conflict after four days of cross-border military strikes following the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam. This development, along with the US-China trade deal of lower tariffs for 90 days, triggered the biggest rally in Indian equities on Monday in over four years. The Sensex climbed 3.7% to 82,429.90, marking its best gains since 1 February 2021. Markets have held on to the most of gains through the week, with the Sensex closing at 82,530.74 on Thursday.
Tariff truce
The US and China this week announced a 90-day tariff truce, bringing a temporary pause to a bruising trade war. Beginning 14 May, the US agreed to lower its tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30% (10% baseline plus fentanyl-specific 20% levy), while China agreed to reduce its tariffs on US goods from 125% to 10%. Analysts are hopeful that the temporary reprieve could provide a window for further negotiations. The US runs the highest trade deficit with China despite a notable decline in recent years.
Satellite power
$3 billion: That is the amount allocated towards the Space-based Surveillance-3 (SBS-3) scheme, whose execution the government plans to expedite in the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist attacks. The Centre has directed three firms—Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics, and Alpha Design Technologies—to shorten their satellite development timeline from four years to 12-18 months, targeting completion by the end of 2026 or earlier, Mint reported. A satellite by Ananth Technologies might even launch this year via ISRO's LVM3 or SpaceX. Under SBS-3, 52 surveillance satellites are being built.
Price pullback
India's retail inflation eased to a near six-year low of 3.2% in April, down from 3.3% in March. This marked the sixth consecutive monthly decline and third consecutive sub-4% print. However, core inflation, which excludes food, and fuel and light groups, remained above 4%, suggesting caution. Persistent price pressures were also evident in health and education costs, which continue to stay above 4%. Nevertheless, declining headline inflation has made it easier for the central bank to continue rate cuts in the coming months.
Regional divide
Car wholesales in eastern and southern states took a beating in 2024-25, while northern and western states continued to report growth, albeit at a slower pace. According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM), the eastern region recorded a 4.2% year-on-year decline in passenger vehicle wholesales in FY25 as opposed to a 4.2% growth in the previous year, Mint reported. Southern states recorded a 3.5% decline as opposed to 6.6%. On the other hand, western and northern states saw 4.4% and 6.6% growth, respectively.
Musical deal
$500-600 million: That is the potential value of the deal that involves Harman US selling a controlling stake in its Indian unit, Mint reported. Harman US, the maker of JBL, Harman Kardon and Infinity audio products, is a subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung. The company has approached global private equity and buyout firms for the deal and appointed Deutsche Bank to manage the process. Harman India operates across four segments—Lifestyle, Connected Car, Professional, and its India Development Centre, which serves as its software development hub.
Mid-tier surge
Mid-cap IT firms hired more employees in FY25, outpacing the big four—Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL Technologies, and Wipro, Mint reported. The top four added 9,442 employees, while their mid-tier rivals (with annual revenue of about $1-6 billion) collectively onboarded 25,794 employees. Among these, Coforge led with 8,771 new hires, surpassing TCS's hiring of 6,433. The top four are facing a slowdown due to their high exposure to the US and European markets for business, while the mid-sized firms are somewhat insulated from the external environment.
Chart of the week: Results out!
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class X and XII board examination results on 13 May. The overall pass percentage was better among Class X at 93.7% versus 88.4% among Class XII students. Girls continued to outshine boys.

US-Iran war updates: United States President Donald Trump has recieved 'immediate praise' from Republicans in Congress and at least one Democrat, for bombing three nuclear sites in Iran. Dissenting from his fellow party-mates, Pennsylvania's Democract Senator John Fetterman, joined Republicans in praising Donald Trump for joining Israel's offensive against Iran, according to an AP report. Posting on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), South Carolina's Republican Senator Lindsey Graham wrote: 'Well done, President Trump'. Congressional Republicans — and at least one Democrat — immediately praised President Donald Trump after he said Saturday evening that the U.S. Further, Senator John Cornyn, the Republican rep of Texas called the US military bombing three sites in Iran a 'courageous and correct decision.' And Alabama Senator Katie Britt, also Republican, called the bombings 'strong and surgical'; while Oklahoma's Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin posted: 'America first, always.' The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, said Trump 'has made a deliberate — and correct — decision to eliminate the existential threat posed by the Iranian regime.' Wicker posted on X that 'we now have very serious choices ahead to provide security for our citizens and our allies.' The quick endorsements of stepped up U.S. involvement in Iran came after Trump had publicly mulled the strikes for days and many congressional Republicans had cautiously said they thought he would make the right decision. Nepal thanks India for evacuating nationals from Iran
Kathmandu [Nepal], June 22 (ANI): Nepal's Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba on Saturday thanked External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for assisting in the evacuation of Nepali students from conflict-hit Iran, calling it a reflection of the strong Nepal-India ties. In a post on X, Deuba wrote, 'Thank you External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar for India's swift assistance in helping to evacuate Nepali nationals from Iran. India's support in Nepal's evacuation efforts is a reflection of strength of Nepal- India ties.' Earlier, the Sri Lankan Government also extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India for its timely assistance in evacuating Sri Lankan nationals from Iran amidst the Islamic Republic's ongoing conflict with Israel. The gesture, part of India's Operation Sindhu, underscores the robust and enduring partnership between the two nations, as the Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka stated in a post on X on Saturday. 'Sri Lanka extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of India for the timely assistance to evacuate Sri Lankan nationals from Iran alongside Indian citizens,' the post read. 'This act of solidarity exemplifies the strong and enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and India and is deeply appreciated by the people of Sri Lanka,' it added. Earlier on Saturday, the Indian Embassy in Iran said that it had made efforts to evacuate citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka and noted that the efforts were made at the request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka. 'On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy's evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka,' the Indian Embassy in Iran posted on X. The Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka had also issued a notice to the Sri Lankan nationals in Iran for the evacuation. 'Notice to Sri Lankan Nationals in Iran. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism informs all Sri Lankans in the Islamic Republic of Iran that the Government of Sri Lanka has made arrangements with the Government of India to assist Sri Lankans who wish to leave Iran by accommodating them in their flights,' the notice said. Meanwhile, another special flight carrying 290 Indians stranded in conflict-hit Iran landed safely in New Delhi on Saturday night, bringing the total number of people evacuated under Operation Sindhu to 1,117. This marks the fifth batch of Indians evacuated from Iran as part of the ongoing operation. In a post on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, 'Operation Sindhu gains momentum. 290 Indian nationals have returned home safely from Iran on a special flight from Mashhad that landed in New Delhi at 2330 hrs on 21 June 2025.' 'With this, 1,117 Indian nationals have been evacuated from Iran,' the MEA added. The conflict between Israel and Iran entered its ninth day on Saturday. The conflict started after Israel, on June 13, launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, dubbed 'Operation Rising Lion'. In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched a large-scale drone and missile operation, 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even during a global crisis, India prioritises ensuring its citizens' security. In the middle of an ongoing war, a conflict-ridden country like Iran opening its airspace is a big win for India's foreign policy, diplomacy and India's reliability,' Tarun Chugh said while speaking to ANI. ''Operation Sindhu' is not only a homecoming of Indian students but is a live example of the PM Narendra Modi government's 'nation first' policy. Even earlier, during the Russia-Ukraine war or any natural calamity, India has given priority to security for its citizens,' he said. Meanwhile, a special flight carrying 290 Indians stranded in conflict-hit Iran landed safely in New Delhi on Saturday night, bringing the total number of evacuees under Operation Sindhu to 1,117. This marks the fifth batch of Indians evacuated from Iran as part of the ongoing operation. I study medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The situation in Tehran is critical. Other places are normal. I am thankful to the government (for the evacuation).' Another evacuee, Naveed, a second-year MBBS student, added, 'I am from Kashmir. I am a 2nd-year MBBS student. I feel very good now. I am thankful to India. They evacuated us.'Describing the fear they faced, one evacuee said, 'I feel very good. There were missiles firing. We were feeling very afraid there. We were stuck there for 1 week.' Momin Ushtaq from Kashmir praised the government's efforts, saying, 'I am from Kashmir. The situation is not good there. We are very thankful to the government of India, Kashmir, and the Embassy. They deserve a special thanks, as they evacuated us and brought us back home.' Gratitude was also directed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Parveen, another evacuee, said, 'I am very happy. I am thankful to PM Modi from the bottom of my heart. Our government helped us to get back here.' Indira Kumari added, 'We have returned. I am thankful to the Indian government and the Prime Minister of India.' Earlier on Saturday, a special flight from Mashhad carrying 310 Indian nationals landed in New Delhi at 4:30 PM. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes targeted a significant nuclear facility in Iran's Isfahan province, as reported by Al Jazeera. As per Al Jazeera, citing an Israeli military spokesperson, the air force struck the main complex as well as buildings involved in centrifuge production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that a centrifuge manufacturing workshop was hit but clarified that no nuclear material was present at the site, so there were no radiological impacts.
