Deadly storms kill 18, injure nearly 100 across Pakistan

A storm hit multiple districts in Pakistan's Punjab province, leading to the collapse of dilapidated buildings and unsafe structures and killing 8 people and injuring 45 others, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Out of eight, three deaths took place in Jhelum, while Rawalpindi, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sialkot, and Mianwali each reported one fatality, ANI reported, citing Pakistani news site Geo News.
Meanwhile, one of the districts of Punjab province, Lahore, witnessed the death of 10 people and 51 injuries due to heavy rains and storms.
Several incidents of fallen trees and damaged solar panels were also reported. In response, Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz instructed the administration and rescue teams to remain on high alert amid severe weather conditions across the province.
A day earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had issued a weather advisory, forecasting isolated showers, thunderstorms, windstorms, and dust storms over the next 12 to 36 hours in parts of Punjab, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Vulnerable areas included Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Lahore, and several surrounding districts. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, similar conditions were expected to impact regions such as Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mardan, and Dera Ismail Khan, according to Geo News.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 20 (ANI): The southwest monsoon officially entered Himachal Pradesh on Friday, five days before its normal onset date of June 25. It will grip the entire state by June 25, which weather department stated as 'normal.' With the early arrival, several parts of the state have already witnessed rainfall, and the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains across Himachal over the next 5 to 7 days. Shobhit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, told ANI, 'On June 20, 2025, the southwest monsoon entered Himachal Pradesh. It has already covered districts like Kinnaur, Kullu, Sirmaur, Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, and Shimla. The remaining districts will be covered by the monsoon in the next 2 to 3 days.' 'Usually, the monsoon arrives in Himachal by June 25, and in Shimla city by June 22. This year's arrival is a few days earlier, which is still considered within the normal range,' he added. On rainfall expectations this season, Katiyar said, 'We are expecting above-normal rainfall across Himachal Pradesh this year. The average monsoon rainfall is around 734 mm, but this year it is likely to reach 800 mm or even more -- that's about 109% of normal.' Highlighting the forecast for the coming week, he warned of poor visibility and the possibility of flash floods or landslides, 'For the next 5 to 7 days, especially in the mid-hills and lower regions, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. Low visibility conditions are likely to persist on June 26 and 27, although some relief may be seen on June 23 and 24.' Regarding alerts issued for various districts, Katiyar said, 'Heavy rain is likely in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Shimla, Sirmaur, Kullu, Mandi, and Solan districts on different dates. An Orange Alert has been issued for June 22 in several districts, including Kangra, Shimla, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, and Solan.' On the government's preparedness, he stated, 'Preparatory meetings have already been held at both the state and district levels. We have issued all advisories and instructions to the administration. Alerts are being issued based on our forecasting systems, and the government is actively coordinating.' Advising the public to remain cautious, Katiyar said, 'People in Orange Alert areas should be especially cautious. Avoid vulnerable zones prone to landslides or waterlogging. Be careful while travelling in areas with low visibility.' (ANI)

New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into most parts of Bihar and some more regions of eastern Uttar Pradesh as of June 19, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). According to the weather department, the deepening monsoon activity is set to bring very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to isolated places across Gujarat, north Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Odisha on Wednesday, with Jharkhand bracing for similar weather on both June 19 and 20. In East and Central India, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Jharkhand on June 19. In West India, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Konkan, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat Region on June 19. In Northeast India, light to moderate rainfall at most places accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall will likely continue over Northeast India during next 7 days. In Northwest India, isolated heavy rainfall likely over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan during June 19-25, JammuKashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on June 22-25th, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab during June 21-25, Haryana, Chandigarh during June 20-25 with very heavy rainfall on West Uttar Pradesh on June 19, East Uttar Pradesh on June 20-21, East Rajasthan on June 19-23, Uttarakhand on June 22, Himachal Pradesh on June 22-25. In South Peninsular India, IMD forecast isolated heavy rainfall likely over Kerala and Mahe on June 19 and during 22-25, Coastal Karnataka on June 19 and during June 21-25. Hot and humid conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema during June 19-21. Earlier on Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of Bhubaneswar reported heavy rainfall across Odisha, with eight to nine places recording significant downpours in the last 24 hours. Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, stated that a well-marked low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal and its neighbourhood, persisting as of 8.30 hours IST on June 18, is likely to bring substantial rainfall to the state over the next two to three days. 'Heavy rainfall has occurred at eight to nine places in Odisha in the last 24 hours. A low-pressure area is formed over Gangetic West Bengal, which may cause the state to receive good rainfall in the next two to three days. Light to moderate rainfall may occur in most parts of the state in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur on the 19th,' Mohanty said. (ANI)
