Welcome the man of Syria who knows how to govern

Arab Times31-05-2025

HIS Excellency Syrian President Ahmed Al- Sharaa, welcome to Kuwait. We welcome this extraordinary political figure who, from the first moment, has known how to draw a roadmap for the renaissance of Syria, this great country whose people have always been known for their professionalism and honest pursuit of livelihood throughout the world. Everyone knows that Syria has no debts. When you came to power, you did not raise flimsy slogans that could tempt some and of no consequence, especially those raised by the previous regime such as 'Free Jerusalem' or 'Free World.'
You did not say 'we would throw Israel into the sea or unite the Arab world.' From the beginning, you rather focused on the establishment of healthy and smooth relations with the whole world, because you practice 'realpolitik'. This is why we have witnessed the entire world's acceptance of the new Syrian government. Moreover, you intelligently and shrewdly dealt with Israel's aggressive practices. You put Tel Aviv in your 'box', because of your desire for just peace.
All Arabs who love Syria will never forget that Ahmed Al-Sharaa cleansed Syria of groups seeking to change its cultural and social ideology. He also freed it from Iranian infl uence, which alienated the beating heart of Arabism from its surroundings. Dirty hands worked to divide its people into sectarian clans and denominational states. If we say that Syria was liberated from this, it was thanks to a man who viewed its people solely through a national lens, who did not favor any group, despise or marginalize another. Instead, he sought to unite his people on a common opinion, despite some of the frustrations caused by the remnants of the former ruling gangs.
These remnants sabotaged the healthy relationships that existed before the previous regime rose to power, while spreading corruption until it became rampant and eroded the State's strength. Welcome to Kuwait. Kuwaiti people have known Syria throughout history and they love it deeply. They did not distance themselves from Syria, but the gangs of the former regime tried their best to isolate Syria from its Arab nation. Today, Syria reoccupied its rightful place among the Arab world, thanks to a man who knows how to govern and deal with various components of his people, without any fuss or creating crises; like those the former regime used to cover up conspiracies against Syrians, aimed at achieving personal interests or diverting attention from the corruption and problems that led to the impoverishment of the people. Undoubtedly, Syria will return to its former glory, thanks to its brave people who will not fail to reconstruct and develop their country armed by determination and strong will.

Kuwait facilitates the transit of thousands stranded by Israel-Iran conflict

KUWAIT CITY, June 19: In response to escalating regional tensions triggered by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, Kuwait has stepped in to assist approximately 30,000 travelers stranded due to suspended air traffic. Since last Friday, these travelers — many of different nationalities — have entered Kuwait through the Abdali border crossing, with numbers continuing to rise. According to security sources cited by Al-Rai, Kuwait's Ministry of Interior, under the directives of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef, is actively working to facilitate the entry and return of stranded individuals. The operation includes Kuwaitis, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals, and Arab, European, and Asian citizens who have been unable to leave Iran or Iraq due to halted air travel. A structured mechanism has been implemented, allowing travelers to cross from Iran's Shalamcheh port into Iraq, then through the Safwan and Abdali land ports, and onwards to their home countries via Kuwait International Airport or through Nuwaiseeb and Salmi border crossings. For humanitarian purposes, Minister Al-Yousef has authorized a seven-day transit visa for GCC residents holding valid travel tickets, enabling them to pass through Kuwait. Additionally, some European citizens have been granted special entry to facilitate their return via the airport. Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior Major General Ali Al-Adwani has also instructed that all humanitarian services be extended to support the safe and efficient movement of stranded travelers. The Abdali crossing has become a hub of logistical activity, with border and customs officials operating around the clock. Coordination is underway with GCC embassies to evacuate citizens before they arrive at Abdali. The Kuwaiti government has deployed approximately 40 buses to transport travelers from the Safwan crossing to Abdali, streamlining their onward transit. 'All relevant personnel are working at full capacity,' the sources confirmed, 'to ensure travelers can safely and easily reach their destinations with the support and care they need.' Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya reaffirmed Kuwait's commitment to the 'safe and speedy' return of Kuwaiti citizens currently in Iran. In an interview with Al-Akhbar TV, Al-Yahya emphasized that no injuries or infections among nationals have been reported since Israel began a major military campaign against Iran last Friday. 'The safety of our citizens abroad is our top priority,' he said. 'We have begun tallying Kuwaiti nationals in Tehran, Mashhad, and Qom, and are arranging their evacuation through the closest exit points.' Evacuations are being coordinated through land crossings into Iraq, with citizens transported back to Kuwait via secure routes. Additional efforts include moving groups through Turkmenistan and its capital to arrange further repatriation. Al-Yahya noted ongoing coordination with neighboring states to ensure smooth passage and expressed hope for the safe return of all citizens. He also highlighted Kuwait's role, as current chair of the GCC, in convening a virtual ministerial meeting last Saturday. The meeting concluded with a joint statement condemning the Israeli military operations and urging de-escalation and a return to negotiations. Kuwait is also monitoring potential radioactive fallout as a precaution, with current indicators remaining stable. Regarding consular support, Al-Yahya said Kuwait's diplomatic mission in Tehran is active, while other GCC countries operate additional consulates in Mashhad and Qom. This Gulf-wide coordination is ensuring comprehensive coverage for citizens across affected areas. 'We operate as a unified team,' he concluded, 'providing direct support to Gulf nationals wherever they are.'

Turkish court sentences opposition politician for inciting hatred, but orders his release

ANKARA, Turkey, June 18, (AP): A Turkish court on Tuesday sentenced a far-right politician to more than two years in prison for inciting public hatred and hostility, but ordered his release because of time already served. Umit Ozdag, the leader of Turkey's Victory Party, was detained in January over accusations that he insulted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with comments that he made during a party meeting. A day later, Ozdag was formally arrested and charged with inciting hatred against migrants. He was blamed for last year's anti-Syrian refugee riots in the central Turkish province of Kayseri, during which hundreds of homes and businesses were attacked. Ozdag, a 64-year-old former academic, is an outspoken critic of Turkey's refugee policies, and has previously called for the repatriation of millions of Syrian refugees. During his trial, Ozdag acknowledged advocating the return of refugees, but strongly denied that he had incited violence against them. He maintained that his imprisonment was politically motivated and aimed at silencing him. The court sentenced him to two years and four months in prison, but ordered his release, ruling that he has already served a sufficient portion of the sentence. The trial took place amid a widespread crackdown on the opposition to Erdogan's Justice and Development Party. Officials from municipalities controlled by the main opposition - the Republican People's Party, or CHP - have faced waves of arrests this year. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, viewed as the main challenger to Erdogan's two-decade rule, was detained in March over allegations of corruption. Many people in Turkey consider the cases to be politically driven, according to opinion polls. However, Erdogan's government insists that the courts are impartial and free from political involvement.
