WI vs AUS first Test: Australia drops Marnus Labuschagne, Smith out injured against West Indies
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped and injured Steve Smith has been ruled out of the Australia lineup for next week's series-opening cricket Test against the West Indies.
Cricket Australia on Friday (June 20, 2025) said Smith would miss the opening match of the three-Test series because of a finger injury sustained in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa last weekend at Lord's. He is expected to be fit for the second Test against the West Indies.
Chief selector George Bailey said teenage opener Sam Konstas and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis would replace Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.
He said Smith needed more time for a wound to heal and he'd be reassessed after an another week.
"We have made the decision to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus," Bailey said.
"We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling test careers." The 19-year-old Konstas has only played two tests, bursting onto the scene with an almost run-a-ball 60 against India in the Boxing Day test in Melbourne last December.
The 30-year-old Inglis has played mostly short-form cricket for Australia, playing his only two Test matches to date in the series win in Sri Lanka in February, where he scored a century on debut.
"In his only opportunity in test cricket to date, Josh was outstanding in Sri Lanka, showing great intent and ability to put pressure on the opposition," Bailey said.
Labuschange averages 46.19 in 104 test innings, including 11 centuries and 23 half-centuries, but has struggled for form in recent series. He hasn't scored a Test hundred since the 2023 Ashes series in Manchester and hasn't scored above 26 in his most recent four Test matches.
Moved up to open in the WTC final against South Africa, he got starts but was out for 17 and 22.
"Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects," Bailey said.
"We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover." The batting order and starting XI will be determined closer to the start of the test next Wednedsay. The second test is scheduled to start July 3.

New Delhi [India]: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has weighed in on the International Cricket Council 's (ICC) event revenue distribution model for the 2024-27 cycle, strongly defending India's large share of the earnings. Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly Podcast, Shastri justified the allocation, asserting that India's dominant contribution to global cricket revenue makes the share fair. Shastri, who was recently honoured with a suite named after him at Lord's during the World Test Championship final, also voiced his disagreement with the idea of a centrally managed Test fund under the ICC, which has been proposed as a way to support the traditional format of the game globally. "Why do you need it? You know, from what is coming now and what the share is, there could be a certain amount of money kept for those countries to promote the game," Shastri said. He added, "There will be central support and it can come through this (fund), but you also have to question, why are cricket boards losing money hand over fist? Is the administration okay? Are they being handled properly? Is the game being run properly? And is there accountability? For me, that is the key. Is there accountability when there's money being paid?"

Nottinghamshire signs Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan for short-term deal
New Delhi [India] June 20 (ANI): India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has signed for Nottinghamshire, on a short-term deal covering the next two Rothesay County Championship fixtures, according to ESPNcricinfo. He will be eligible for selection for the upcoming Championship fixtures against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge and Somerset in Taunton. The left-hander will serve as Kyle Verreynne's replacement while the World Test Championship-winning South African is away playing a two-Test series in Zimbabwe. Having been included in India's squad for the 2023 World Test Championship final, Ishan made his Test bow a month later against West Indies and struck an unbeaten 52 from just 34 deliveries in his second match. Kishan is known for his limited-overs game but has 3447 first-class runs in 58 games, including 17 half-centuries and eight hundreds. The wicketkeeper-batter also has 118 catches and 11 stumpings. He has also turned out for IPL sides Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians, and, most recently, Sunrisers Hyderabad, for whom he hit a 47-ball 106 this year. 'I'm feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills,' Ishan Kishan said. England broke the Indian opening partnership on the stroke of Lunch as KL Rahul narrowly missed out on his half-century. India lost two wickets right before lunch as debutant Sai Sudharsan was removed by England skipper Ben Stokes for a duck. Sudharsan fell right into Stokes' trap at the stroke of lunch. Eager to get bat on ball and get off the mark in Test cricket, he was caught down leg. England Test captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl against India in the opening Test of the five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. It is also the start of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both nations. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul gave India a good start batting first on Day 1 in the first session.
