Cape Town wildfire: Smoke engulfs Cape Town
South African National Parks (SANParks) has provided an update into the ongoing fight against the wildfires in the Constantiaberg mountains.
On Monday night, a flare-up started above Boyes Drive and is slowly burning down towards the road above Lakeside.
Another flare-up occurred in Chapman's Peak around the early hours of the morning and is burning towards Hout Bay.
Four helicopters were once again launched on Tuesday morning and will focus on containing these two areas.
The fireline above Tokai is being managed well with much of the active fire from last night extinguished.
Crews remain in the area to ensure flare is addressed swiftly if it occurs.
Thus far, about 3 000 hectares of vegetation has burnt.
Members of the community who were evacuated on Sunday as a precaution have now returned to their homes.
The public are urged to strictly adhere to all hiking and mountain bike trail closures and to avoid the Silvermine, Tokai and Boyes Drive areas of Table Mountain National Park for their own safety and to allow easy access for firefighters.
Further updates will be provided in the course of the day.
It's scarcely believable therefore that SANParks has confirmed that there is a continued concern regarding the presence of cyclists in areas that have been closed off due to fire damage and ongoing firefighting operations.
Those cyclists – and the public in general – is urged to comply with all trail closures to ensure their safety.

SANParks confirmed in its latest update on Monday evening that fire crews from various agencies, including aerial support, have been actively working throughout the day to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby communities, including Tokai, Zwaanswyk, Noordhoek, and Clovelly.
While fire conditions in the Zwaanswyk, Ou Kaapse Weg, Silvermine, and Noordhoek areas are reported to be under control, crews are continuously monitoring for flare-ups.
Early this morning, four helicopters began water bombing operations to assist ground crews in their efforts.
Fortunately, there has been no structural damage reported, although approximately 2 600 hectares of vegetation have been impacted by the fire.
All available resources from the Table Mountain National Park Fire Management, NCC Environmental Services and Volunteer Wildfire Services, Working on Fire, Provincial Disaster Management, Enviro Wildfire Services, Cape Peninsula Fire Protection Services, City Biodiversity Management and the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services are actively on-site.
Ou Kaapse Weg is now open to the public.
However, SANParks has asked everyone not to stop and hike into the burnt areas.
Some spots are still hot, and people have already attempted to access closed sections of the park.
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and other welfare organisations are already on site, monitoring the animals that have been impacted by the fire.
As a precaution, the following areas will remain closed until further notice:
– Tokai and Silvermine, both east and west hiking trails will remain closed to the public.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will issue further updates as conditions change.
The City of Cape Town has issued a call for public support, asking for donations to sustain the firefighters working under extreme conditions.
The immediate needs for the crews include: Bottled water
Nutritional drinks such as Energade and Powerade
such as Energade and Powerade Energy bars
Saline-based eye drops to alleviate discomfort caused by smoke and ash
Officials emphasised the importance of keeping firefighters hydrated and energised as they face gruelling conditions on the fire lines.
Those wishing to assist are asked to deliver donations to designated collection points set up by the City.

Boyes Drive fire under control; brave WSAR team rescues teenager from Table Mountain

According to the young hiker, he had attempted to find a shortcut from the India Venster trail to the Contour Path. While descending the steep ground, he slipped and fell a short way onto a narrow ledge. WSAR spokesperson David Nel said he was uninjured in the fall. 'A passing good Samaritan spotted the stranded youth and quickly raised the alarm by calling the emergency number – 021 937 0300. 'Rescue teams immediately responded to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Lower Cable Station, swiftly hiking up to locate the stuck hiker on a cliff above the Contour Path. 'A rescue climber on board the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter was flown to the scene and hoisted down to the ledge. The youth was helped into a rescue harness before being hoisted from the small ledge and flown to a nearby landing zone.' The incident was concluded with everyone safely off the mountain at 6.36pm. 'Just as climbing a mountain requires physical and mental fortitude, navigating life's difficulties demands perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to overcome adversity. The journey to the summit, much like the journey through life, is rarely easy, but the rewards of reaching the top are worth the effort,' Nel said. "This Youth Day, and with school holidays only a few days away, we urge hikers of all ages to embrace the enduring spirit of adventure responsibly. Research your intended routes to ensure age and ability-appropriate outings. 'Keep in mind that the days are shorter, so plan your outdoor activities for earlier in the day. Walk in groups and always tell someone where you're going, and respect the natural environment, always keep to the trails and avoid shortcuts. 'Make sure to pack a torch and an extra warm layer of clothing before venturing outdoors,' Nel added. Watch: Firefighters contain part of Table Mountain blaze as winds hamper efforts
It is all hands on deck as crews from SANParks, Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), NCC Wildfire Services, and the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue battle a fire in Table Mountain National Park. According to the latest update on the park's Facebook page – posted 13 hours ago – a fire above Boyes Drive and in Peck's Valley remained active. 'The left flank of the fire has been contained in areas accessible on foot, while the right flank in Peck's Valley continues to burn downhill towards the road. Efforts are currently focused on slowing the fire's downhill progression.' The update noted that Boyes Drive remains closed to the public. 'Members of the public and hikers are strongly urged to avoid the surrounding trails until further notice. The fire was first reported at about 08:30 [yesterday], and two fire crews were immediately mobilised. VWS were mobilised about 45 minutes after this. The City fire resources were also mobilised. The fire is being driven by a strong and variable wind which makes conditions difficult for the ground crews to fight.' Watch the videos: The blaze comes less than two months after a fire raged in the Silvermine section of the park, between Tokai and Noordhoek in the southern peninsula. In a Facebook post last Sunday, SANParks announced that trails closed in Tokai and Silvermine East (including Kalk Bay, St James, Muizenberg mountains and the Steenberg Plateau) will reopen on July 1. 'The Silvermine picnic site and boardwalk around the dam and as well as the riverwalk and other trails will remain closed as all the infrastructure at Silvermine West has been damaged and the ablution blocks burnt down. Infrastructure repairs will take some time and we will not be able to open the picnic area while there are no toilets.'

Firefighters tackle Boyes Drive fire

Spokesperson for City Fire and Rescue Service, Jermaine Carelse, said that they received an emergency call at 8.30am on Sunday informing them of mountain slopes being alight above Boyes Drive. 'Several resources were dispatched to the scene as well as the IMT type 4 to co-ordinate operational functions. The right flank was quickly secured, however, the concern is the left flank, which is slowly spreading towards Kalk Bay. 'We are being assisted by TMNP and Volunteer Wildfire Services in our efforts to get the fire under control,' Carelse said. 'At this stage, we cannot give a definitive answer as to how long it will take to extinguish the blaze.'
